this may sound like a ridiculous question - but im just curious - does anybody know the speed of splat? that cut off line where bugs can no longer dodge or just bounce off your car but get crushed and leave their gooey entrails all over. i know its below 65 mph.

man - its crazy - i got all the bug splat off this morning and by afternoon a have a ton more. angry-bangheadonwall.gif angry-hitselfonhead.gif

It depends on the bug, y'all!
Smaller bugs allow a higher speed without splatting.
Bigger bugs are the inverse of the previous sentence.

Yeah, I'm not sure bug dodge or just get carried by the air flowing over the car. I think it's got to be a weight-to-size ratio: Weight determines how much force is necessary to move the bug and size/area determines how much force it'll feel from the airflow.

More than you ever wanted to know about bug splats: yucky.gif

Bug Splat Under the Microscope

the red spots are most likely mosquitos - and females at that since only females ingest blood. Yellow or creamy spots that slide upward are typically butterflies or moths. They leave fluttering scales or powder. The smallest splats are usually biting midges aka black flies. Splats that glow are fireflies. Loud splats are usually cockroaches or beetles because they have the hardest shells.

I read somewhere that carbohydrates are what makes the biological remains of the bug stick to your windshield or paint. That being said - theoretically at least - if you "digest" them - they should come off easier. Know what does most of the digesting of carbs? hint drooling.gif

Awesome link. Thanks for sharing.
I was also thinking that the rake of the windshield has something to do with how many you collect.

im sure it has an effect. the greatest effect are on the bumper / grill / headlights.

and i was looking at that article just to look at the pictures - but i hadnt read it - looking at it again - it seems the answer to the original question is on there.

below 42 mph - no splat
42 - 54 mph - partial splat - with some bug parts intact
54 mph+ - complete splat - almost no recognizable parts
