My exhaust manifold has developed a leak, and I am looking at options for a replacement. Wasn't sure if anyone had experience with relatively inexpensive aftermarket headers, or if there were options for swapping with another vehicle. (assuming no on that second one)

There is a header available for the car , but You will have a cel and no way to get rid of it. It only about 5hp gain.

With the $100 ebay header, some people have no problems whatsoever, others wind up cracking after a few months.
As for the cel debate, here are the two most common setups for these cars. If done right, will not leave you with a cel. Option A: Install header. install the first o2 sensor before the second cat. Install the second o2 sensor after the second cat. No check engine light. You may need to purchase another downstream o2 sensor so the wiring is long enough, depending where you put the first o2 sensor. Option B: purchase a header that has a bung on one of the runners and another bung before the flexpipe. This will allow you to use both of your existing o2 sensors. Being that there is no cat on the manifold, you will need to buy a spark plug non-fouler from the parts store for $2, install the non-fouler into your downstream o2 bung. No check engine light. Yes you may fail inspection if they actually take the time to look. I take my car to a state inspector that doesn't look, no problems. You can also buy a manifold from a 1996 Elantra. It's a catless, cast 4-2-1 manifold with a bulky heatshield similar to the stock XD heat shield. It should help you get by any visual inspection as it covers where the cat would be. They can be purchased cheap, I paid $20 for mine iirc. It will probably get you close to the same gains as an aftermarket header. I have no cats and NO check engine light!!! Just a non-fouler. -------------------- 2000 Elantra

I can tell you that non-foulers do not work 100%. Running header and aftermarket cat with non-fouler, it's fine around town. Put it on the highway at steady speed for long periods of time and it trips that light faster than snot.
