Good morning!

I just bought a 2010 Elantra Blue last night and was wondering if I have to do something special to get my IPOD Nano working with the Apple USB cable and the Elantra's USB port. When I plug my IPOD or my Wife's IPOD in, the radio starts playing some mp3 that I've never heard before and I know is not on my IPOD. Are there some preloaded mp3's in the radio that automatically play when you plug something into the USB port? I am able to use the AUX port without an issue, but would prefer to use USB so that I can control the IPOD via the radio. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

As far as I know you should be able to take control of the ipod once you plug it in.

Maybe someone with a newer car than mine can confirm that.

I've heard/read that Hyundai sells a "special" cable that has both USB and the analogue audio connection built in. This seems silly since the USB cable alone is enough to control the iPod, but was likely a money making decision. You probably need the official Hyundai/Kia cable. eBay should have some cheaper ones than your dealer.

This may be what you need.

laugh.gif Well congrats on the new car, anyway! I put a David Bowie CD in mine and just play it over and over. I suppose SOME people need variety. laugh.gif

Well, I talked the salesman into giving me the special cable. It works just like mentioned above, plugs into the Aux and USB at the same time and connects to the special connection on the IPOD. With this, I can contol the IPOD with the factory radio. I guess they had to differentiate somehow since it's also supposed to be able to play MP3's directly from a flash drive plugged into the USB. Oh well, for now I'm listening to the XM radio stations that I will have free for 3 months. After that I'll probably start using the IPOD.

Thanks for the INPUT, pun intended. :-)

well I was kinda right... guess some things you buy you need to read the fine print where it says *cable not included*

Glad it's working nice and simple.
At least your car didn't come with *some assembly required* biggrin.gif

The reason it needs the special cable is even in the built in cables on other cars, you need to get the audio to your car. the usb part of the cable only handles control of the device where as the aux port handes audio. On other cars you will notice you will have more then 4 wires going to the head unit especially if your headunit provides control ability so you can keep the ipod/phone in the glove compartment

$30 cable kind of a gyp, oh well

2010 owner here as well smile.gif

I honestly do not accept that as being a valid reason for needing to buy a separate cable. I have an aftermarket headunit that allows full iPod control, charging, and audio through the Apple USB cable. There's no reason that a special cable is needed, except to make money for the car manufacturer. I am a businessman and can respect that, but it's still sort of a ripoff and not based on a technological limitation.

Actually, I am using the cable that came with my ipod nano....the USB to Ipod cable....It works fine. I think maybe what was playing was the xm radio u get for free for 3 months. maybe you just had to press the "AUX" button, or try to plug it in again. There wasn't any need for the special cable from Hyundai. And I can control the ipod through the radio controls, just as u can with the special cable. Sometimes if I put something in the cubby (in front of the USB plug in), I may bump the cable, which knocks it loose and it doesn't work....just plug it back in.

I got my cable free when I bought my 09. And it is a nice setup. Charges my iPhone on the go besides having access to my music. Nicer, IMO, than a aftermarket because of the direct plugin in the dash, which I can always use any other MP3 player or anything with a USB setup. Buy your self a mini external harddrive and load your entire library onto it and keep it plugged in the USB port.....

And I recommend getting the XM subscription. I think I pay $32 every three months. Seems like a waste of a radio without the subscription....
