The upcoming, recently revealed, 2017 Elantra is definitely more conservative than the outgoing model inside and out. It also has engines with less horsepower. For enthusiasts, it's a bit of a bummer. But there may be hope. It seems Hyundai may be releasing a sport version of the Elantra. Likely a top of the line option in both the sedan and later the GT hatchback. While there's been no leaked information regarding the drivetrain, I have an educated guess what it will be.

I'm guessing they'll use the engine from the 2016 Tucson. That's a 1.6 turbo producing 175hp and 195 lb/ft of torque. Most likely mated to a 7 speed DCT and possibly a 6 speed manual.

A 7 second 0-60 Elantra getting nearly 40mpg on the highway would be a good thing!

I would believe the 16.GDI-T from the Veloster/ForteSX at the 201hp mill and that manual/autoDCT option would be fairly easy/cost effective since they're already sharing that same platform.

Bob, the reason I'm guessing they'll be using the de-tuned 1.6 is the fact that it has the same torque output and gets much better gas mileage.

Either way, those would be nice upgrades from the rather pedestrian output levels that they're initially offering.

the turbos in real life situations are ranging 28-35mpg. not anywhere near 40 or more like the NA versions.

35 is nothing to sneeze at. I'm sure you have to baby it a bit to get there, but I'd dig it.

it is still a tough pill to swallow for some. not that i care, i did not buy the VT because of its gas mileage. in fact it has the worst mileage out of any car i've ever owned except my 240sx and MS6.

Better than the "bigblock" forte I have now. One redline up shft and we drop 2mpg on the tank average. No lie.

A redline a day keep the mechanic away.

Funny you mention that.... Wife's Rio threw a fit a few weeks back. She stole my car one morning with a note that said "My car is broke, CEL flashing and it runs terrible". Checked for codes... nothign. So I drove it for over a week. That first day it WAS driving crappy. Matted the gas and a cloud of black smoke poured out of the tail pipe as I ran that mofo to redline everychance I could. NExt day... it was perfectly fine. I couldn't come to any conclusion other than she's been trying to get 40mpg out of this like her old turd and it was just carboned up. Things like that SHOULDN'T happen on a newer vehicle but hell if I know.
