Found this in the Toronto Star today, may be of use for members who have bought electronics and other items in Ontario:
Wednesday's story on the problems associated with consumer warranties was welcome. It did not, however, accurately describe consumers' legal rights in Ontario concerning defective products and consequently understated the potential consumer detriment arising from the sale of these warranties. Under the Ontario Sale of Goods Act, a retailer is legally liable to a purchaser for a defective product. The legal standard is that goods must be merchantable and reasonably fit for their purpose. This includes an implied durability test; that is to say, if a product with an expected life of five years breaks down after 14 months, then it likely was defective at the time of sale. Depending on the particular facts, a consumer may have a right to reject (return) the goods for a refund or keep the goods and recover damages which would be equivalent to the cost of a repair. Under section 9 (3) of the Consumer Protection Act 2002 these obligations of the retailer may not be excluded or waived when selling to a consumer. Any attempt to do so is of no legal effect. Retailers therefore have primary legal responsibility to purchasers.
It is well-known that the sale of extended warranties by retailers is highly profitable. Warranties are usually sold aggressively and consumers often lack the necessary information to make an optimal decision.

Well, it was discussed before in another thread, but I thought I would get a meet thread going so we can figure out when is good for everyone.
I'll be in the Ottawa area (Orleans) by the evening of the 21st of December. I will probably be around until at least New Years (Thinking of heading down to FW and Indy to bring some Canadian Beer to LateAPXR, J-Son, and Bob).
Any ideas as to what kind of trouble we could get into?

Is good?
I bought my car with 95000kms, and the major servicing needs to be done at 96000KMs.
But at least I know it will be done.
Now which dealer in the Ottawa area is good for service?
and what should the 96K serviceing cost?

Meet in Victoriaville, September 2-3 2006ALL ARE WELCOME
This is especially for those from Ontario and those from Ohio who promised me to come to our next Quebec meet
POSSIBLE SCHEDULE:FRIDAY: (Optionnal)
Night: Meet up at my house (Mapquest:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searc...=QC&zipcode=H7P ), or near it (depending on the amount of people coming I will update this part) at 7 PM to 8 PM
We are going to the Sanair Racetrack once everyone is here, until around 11 PM, it's 5$ to get in, and an additional 5$ to race as much as you want. I will not be racing personally this time, so if you are not a racer yourself, you won't be alone.
Afterwards, we head to the official meeting place, which happens to be the home of a member here (Monster) that has a HUGE backyard/montain which is around 1:20 hours away from Montreal, as a convoy. We will then have a bonfire and budweiser night, and camp the night away afterwards.
SATURDAY:Morning: Remaining people who didn't make it on friday can make it on their own (Mapquest:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formt...ry=CA&geodiff=1 ).
Noon: BBQ party, chip in a few bucks and we will be buying hotdogs and hamburgers for all, or there are a couple of places where you could also eat if you are not interested around the area.
Afternoon: Work on the cars/chill. When supper time comes, we are going to ''La petite Vache'' in Princeville, around 15 kms away, to eat the best poutine in the whole damn world (remember, it's the area where the poutine got invented!).
Sunset: Go to the Arthabaska Mount (beautiful) to take lots and lots of pics and see some nice landscape.
Evening: Go back to the meet spot, for more bonfire fun and (hopefully) more people to join to have fun with and share thoughts around the fire.
SUNDAY: Landscaping day all day, there are some AWESOME things to see. Shooting videos, taking pics, and chilling. If there is any work to be done on cars, it will be done.
Let's just say it's the official ''Last Minute Planning'' day.
NOTES:-Bring your camping gear!
-If you're coming from far away, you can come crash at my place in advance.
-Will be transfered to the next weekend if it rains...
For those wondering, there is enough space to fit up to around 50 cars in his yard. Possibly even more. So that's no problem Here's a pic of it (and yes, the mountain in the back is also part of it, ha):IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS JUST EMAIL THE HOST (MONSTER) OR ADD HIM ON MSN: mustang_cobra_svt@hotmail.com.More pics from last year's meet there (rather small meet since it was the first):

Well, you guys missed a good day.
It started out a little cloudy and a spot or two of rain
but then turned into a great day.
Lots of Tibs, some Accents a Santa Fe, Sonata, Pony and
two Elantra GTs.
A couple of free lunches were given out by Hutch's and Graham
gave them to the people who had travelled the furthest.
All in all it was a good day.
Have a look at a few snaps of the day.

The my lane slows and the other picks up and yes,

I can see all the dirt and scuff marks of my car in his !
I have to go and wash, and wash, and wash my car.

I'm asking Canadian members only because there is always a price difference and less selection in Canada then the US.
What did you pay for rotors? I got a quote from a respectible shop and it was $72 per rotor for the fronts (Not installed). I couldn't believe it was this high since they seem so much cheaper on EBay.
And where did you get them from?

There's paperwork, but it's not difficult
Follow these steps to shop across the borderJun. 17, 2006. 01:00 AM
MARK TOLJAGIC
SPECIAL TO THE STAR
Despite dire warnings and teeth gnashing by the car companies, there's nothing unlawful about buying your car in the United States and importing it yourself.
In fact, the Canadian government has streamlined its procedures to help individuals and businesses move vehicles across the Canada-U.S. border with a minimum of red tape.
Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles (http://www.riv.ca) is a private contractor to the federal government that has introduced procedures that, together with changes to the Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations, have made importing a car about as easy (or as difficult) as doing your income taxes.
The first step is to review Transport Canada's list of admissible U.S. vehicles, available on the RIV website. The list is comprehensive, showing almost every carmaker whose products are or were sold in the U.S. — everything from Alfa Romeo to Volvo (but not Yugo).
Vehicles older than 15 model years have few restrictions, but newer ones have to meet Canadian safety standards, which differ from the U.S. primarily in the areas of bumper strength, seatbelt anchorage (GM's door-mounted belts are unacceptable) and labeling.
Most U.S. models require a minimum of modifications, typically a pair of daytime running lamps and 50-cent metric stickers for the instrument panel. Your vehicle has to be inspected for compliance within 45 days of entry to Canada.
Gary Moriarty, RIV's deputy registrar, strongly recommends using a vehicle history-search service such as CarFax to check the title of the vehicle you have your heart set on. The service can flag non-repairable titles — indicating a wreck or U.S. south coast flood damage — as well as odometer rollbacks.
The costs of importing a vehicle aren't insignificant.
First of all, be prepared to pay cash for your new or used vehicle, as U.S. dealers and banks generally won't float a loan or write a lease to a non-resident. The good news is you'll be exempt from the sales tax levied by most states by arranging an in-transit permit.
At the border, you'll have to pay the RIV fee of $209 as well as the GST on the Canadian exchange value of the vehicle's purchase price. There is also excise tax of $100 on the air conditioner (if so equipped), whether it's working or not.
Expect to pay 6.1 per cent duty on models that fail to meet NAFTA content rules or are assembled outside North America. Big honking vehicles weighing more than 2,007 kg, such as a luxury SUV, are subject to a further excise tax.
The 8 per cent provincial sales tax will be applied when you buy your licence plates. Your car will also have to pass safety certification, which is mandatory even for a new vehicle.
When it's all said and done, you've paid the same GST and PST you've always paid, along with a few inspection fees and possibly the federal duty (if it's an offshore import).
In return, you get to shop the largest auto market in the world with unlimited selection, and bring home a new or used vehicle at substantial savings.
And those savings are expected to grow as the Canadian dollar continues its climb to parity with the U.S. dollar — unless the automakers decide to adjust their Canadian retail prices.

I'm just about to buy Elantra GT manual trans. I went to the dealer and the salesperson offered 0% 4-year finance-purchase by paying $527 per month for the next 48 months (4-years). The road price would then be $25 296!!!! This seems ridiculously high. Any thoughts?
The vehicle list price is $19980 plus $1345 Delivery and Destination charge. So doing: ($19980+$1345) plus 15% tax would GRAND TOTAL: $24524 There is a difference of $772 - where in the hell did that come from? Is the salesperson blantanly trying to rip me off?
Or are there more charges that are levied and what are they?
Do you recommend any dealerships for warranty/service/repairs? I live in Toronto.
I'm thinking of Future Hyundai, Hyundai of Mississauge, Thornhill Hyundai, Kingscross Hyundai, just to name some.
This will be my first Hyundai and I expect trouble.
Thanks yall.

Tories to criminalize street racing
Sentences to include driving prohibition
May 25, 2006. 01:59 PM
CANADIAN PRESS
VANCOUVER — Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his government will make street racing a new criminal offence that will result in stiffer sentences for offenders.
The bill would also include driving prohibitions for those who are convicted of street racing.
Harper says his government will introduce the legislation as part of its efforts to crack down on crime.
The government has already introduced legislation to end condition sentences for serious offences and establish mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes.
Harper made the announcement at the RCMP's B.C. headquarters .
Street-racing has been a particular problem in Vancouver where several deaths have prompted outrage and calls for a crack-down.

Ok, the first of many Quebec/Ontario meets and I expect a bunch of people because I'm driving a lot of hours for this.
http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&...wa,+Ontario,+CAclick on the red marker, then click "to here" and put in your address, easy enough for everyone?
We are going to meet at the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell Express in Ottawa on St.Laurent and Inudstrial (where Industrial turns to Innes). 2PM on May 27th. There will be a bunch to do, and we may even work on my car, thanks Felix. There are a few ideas floating around of exactly what we are going to do, but either way we can figure out some things... there are pleanty of beautiful drives around the area, lots of nice buildings and heritage things to see, and don't forget go-karting!
Anyway, please reply to this thread and let us know if you are coming. I will update the first post as the time draws near with names and if you are lucky, they may be in bold!
If you are coming please post either here OR in the thread on ElantraXD, though posting in the thread over there will be more convenient.---------

Looking for new rims and likely tires too (better wet traction and then dedicated winter tires on stock rims). These guys are apparently based in B.C. and have prices similar to Canadian Tire. (if that means anything) They claim that if you buy tires and rims together they properly mount and balance them and use the proper hub ring for centering rim on your wheel. Also, their shipping is much lower than I would have expected. Any opinions on this retailer at all or my rim/tire selection?
Rims: Motegi RT5 Wheels
http://www.1010tires.com/wheel.asp?wheelbr...&wheelmodel=RT5 Tires: Michelin Hydroedge
http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?tirebran...ETM%3C%2Fsup%3E Still not sure about the rims as they are "Painted Silver". That doesn't sound good to me. They are light (only 12 lbs for 15") but perhaps going heavier and looking for polished aluminum or chrome and limiting the wheels to lower priced rims available.
Looking for the practical type of tire, not high performance dedicated. Thanks.

Ok so this is what i have been offered... $22,100 for an midnight blue 5spd gt hatch with sunroof and all options. This comes with 0% financing for 5 years.... Is this a good deal?
The other offer was if you pay cash or say get a loan from your own bank then they will knock $2500 off the price so i could get it for $19,600 but then i would be paying interest on the loan....
Either way is this to much or does it seem reasonable... i paid 22,600 for my 03 gt premium but the 06's don't have the heated leather seats available in them.

If you're Canadian and thinking about getting XM satalite radio then you may want to check this out.
http://canada.kia-global.com/If you test drive any Kia until June 15th you will get a XM radio with 2 months service. The catch.... you have to subscribe for a 12 month pre-paid service with them. From what I can see it's 12.99 a month so you looking at paying 160 give or take to get 14 months of XM.
Not bad considering that the Radio is $99 to begin with.
Just giving you a heads up if you haven't heard the radio commercials.

I was in a Hyundai dealership yesterday and during the conversation he asked me what version of the Elantra I had. (I had already told him I have a '05 elantra) So I told him the VE. However, he leaned over the counter and looked out saw that it is the 5 door version and told me 'ok, the GT'. I as him why that one when according to paperwork and the saleswoman, it is a VE equipped model. He told me that there are only 2 versions. If it is a 4 door, it is a GLS, if it is a 5 door, it's a GT. I asked him in that case what happened to a lower version equipped with nothing, no cruise, no pb/pdl, etc and he answered that they are not sold anymore.
On the other hand, the hyundaicanada.com web site clearly shows the 4 separate versions (at least applicable for the '06) with at least the lowest 2 or 3 versions having the choice of 4 or 5 door and the difference between the versions as the options equipped.
So who is right, the web site (which I was going by) or this parts counter worker at the dealership?
