Just picked up our new 2012 Touring yesterday.
When I first looked in the hatch of one at the dealership, the rear seats were folded down, and with the added cargo area it looked huge.
I kept the rubber trunk liner from our 2004 GT, hoping to use it in our Touring if it fit OK.
Well it turns out I'm going to have to trim it to fit.
The 2004 GT had a larger floor area, with the seats up, than our 2012 Touring does.
Will need to trim about 6 inches off the front end of the rubber liner, and a little on the rear sides.
Now I'm sure overall volume is more in the Touring, as it should have more "head room".

In the Touring brochure, it states the Touring's interior volume is 3,555 litres.
I guess this must be total volume.

Anyone know the 2004 GTs interior volume, or other trunk space specs for the different models?

Looking on edmunds (look up the car and look under Features and Specs):

2004 GT:

Cargo capacity, all seats in place: 28.3 cu.ft.
Maximum cargo capacity: 37 cu.ft.

2012 GLS Touring:

Cargo capacity, all seats in place: 24.3 cu.ft.
Maximum cargo capacity: 65.3 cu.ft.

So, yeah -- smaller with seats up but much larger with them down.

Just wanted to see the numbers.

I hate when they use litres as the unit of measurement for car volume.
3,555 litres sounds like a lot of water bottles, or oil, as far as trying to visualize it.
Cubic feet is so much easier.

The Touring would have much more interior space overall. If I remember right they are close to the same length. However the bonnet is much shorter on the Touring.

Cargo space with the seats folded down is amazing! we moved house with my i30cw with the extra head room you can load this beast up really well. and the turbo diesel loved towing the fully loaded 8x6 caged trailer behind hit!

Yes, for moving a lot of items, the Touring is great.
I bought a patio set, 6 chairs that stack, table, umbrella and base.
As I was walking out the store with the cart, a guy says "I hope you have a truck".
Nope, just an Elantra Touring.
It all fit in with the seats down.

The two advantages of the Touring vs. the '04 hatchback (I have both) are that it's 4" wider between the wheel wells and considerably taller. While the "trunk" area may be smaller, with the seats folded down it's much larger overall.
