I remember this coming up a while back with no definitive conclusion. So I was wondering, what do think is the right way to pronounce "Hyundai"? My vote goes to "Hun-Day". What's yours?

Mines a midwest cross of "hun" and "hon" -day. I was taught this by the old GM at the Hyundai store. He had asked one of the higher ups back in the day and that's how they pronounced it.

I generally say Hun-day. However, I've been to Korea and know several people that lived there long-term and the Korean pronunciation is Hyoon-dee or something pretty close to that.

don't know why americans have so much trouble with the 'hy', 99.99% of people butcher my wife's name (hyunmee) so she goes by paige. -------------------- -- yaTHauSeR Taltari

QUOTE (yathauser @ Feb 22 2006, 03:33 PM) hyun-de (like you're stopping halfway through 'day') don't know why americans have so much trouble with the 'hy', 99.99% of people butcher my wife's name (hyunmee) so she goes by paige. Not a week goes by at Boing-Boing without a mention of some 'engrish' on an asian site or food product or album cover. It's fairly universal that many people will mis-pronounce a foreign name, even well known and seemingly obvious ones like 'Doyle' (my last name, where by pronounced 'Dole' or 'Doll') even if they are english first speakers... -------------------- To Helena Handbasket! |

I've found the american pronounciation quite humorous.
I say it the 'proper' way, hee-yun-day, but I say it really fast. PS: This topic's been done before. http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/lofiversi...x.php/t340.html -------------------- |

The guy on the ads for Bill Bryan Hyundai always says Hon-die and it always sounds like Honduh and it makes me want to write a disgruntled letter!
