Last night we made a family run to the grocery store to get some stuff. When we pulled into the driveway and stopped by the side door to unload, my wife looks over at me (we took her car) and asks "the brake pedal's not supposed to go to the floor, is it?" Well, no, hon... it's not. Unloaded the car, got everything and everyone inside the house and then I pulled the car into the garage for her (and so I can try to figure out what happened). As I'm walking back to the house I notice a puddle on the driveway. You guessed it: brake fluid.

Head back out to the garage, pop the hood and check the master cylinder: bone dry. Not a big surprise. Everything under the hood looks dry, though. No leak up here.

Fire up the compressor and pull off the LF wheel. Nothing looks too bad in here, either. But wait... I think I see a drip back there...

Put the wheel back on, drop it down and take the trouble light farther back. Ah, yes... here we are. The leak. Seems that at least one of the solid lines back to the rear wheels rusted through and finally popped when she stopped last night. I can't tell which one it is, but they're both corroded pretty badly. Certainly more trouble than the car's worth to try and fix it myself.

So now the search is on for a new vehicle. Likely going to be a minivan, what with 2 growing kids and all. That Rio is/was a pretty decent little bucket.

IMO, rust is the only reason these damn things ever die. Or accidents.

No, Kyle... I offered it to you. It would make a horrible autocross car, BTW... it's a slushbox. Make me an offer and you can thrash it around on the ice as much as you want. biggrin.gif

I don't even know which line it is, and they're both rusty. It's a 12-year-old car and since we need to upgrade anyway, it's time.

Don't think it's been in one of those, although it's got some good dings from getting parked in a grocery store parking lot.

Ben i really would get the car, but it would cost to much for me to come and get it. Plus i dont have room for another car. If i lived by you, in a hart beat.

So the Rio has been replaced. Purchased today was a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. It's a pretty clean vehicle, despite having 90,000 miles on it. A couple of things I'll have to sort out, but it ought to serve us as well as the little beast did.

BTW, only got $274 in trade for the beast. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised we got that much, although if they sell it to a scrapper they ought to get at least that much back.

Link to the new van here.

It had a shade under 140k on the clock, it needs at least one (and probably both) solid brake lines replaced, it's got a leak somewhere toward the top of the gas tank (causing a CEL), it's due for a timing belt and water pump (which I was kind enough to leave in the car for them)... I'm glad they didn't laugh it straight back off the lot. It needs a lot of work before they can sell it to anyone.

If your looking for a forum for the Van, I was on http://forum.chryslerminivan.net/forum.php when I had my Grand Caravan.
A decent forum, but was bought out by Autoguide a while back and went down a little when that happened.

Always liked the town and country mini vans. Not sure how the 2008 is, but the new 2014 drive like a dream and have a good amount of power in them too.

So far we're happy with it. I need to sort out something with one of the 3rd row seat sections; the seat back won't lock in the upright position. Not a big problem for us so far, but definitely something we'll want to get sorted out quickly. Also have to figure out how to adjust the side mirrors. They don't appear to be powered, but there's no joysticks or anything to adjust them on the inside at all. I can't imagine that you'd push on the mirrors themselves...

The important part is that the wife likes it more every day.
