I noticed a dent in the rear passenger side door last week.
Just pushed in, no scratches, and I'm hoping I can just pull it out.
Then looking closer at the door, I noticed the bottom edge is rusting.
The other side is too, but not as much.

I figured I will run this by the dealer, as the car is going in for a steering recall.
The dealer has repaired the rear hatch for rust last year, no charge, as we had the car rustproofed from the dealer/Hyundai.
They had one look at the car, saw the dent, and said this car has been hit.
Now I know this dent just happened last week, and the rust has been there for some time.
Plus it's rusting on the other side, same area.
52,000 kms on her, 2012 Touring.

The service manager has taken pictures, and a report, and has to send it off to Hyundai for approval for repair.
I should know in about a week.
Sure hope they are going to fix this, or it'll hurt the way I feel about dealing with them.

Any other FD 2009~2012 Elantra owners getting rust?

Had a minimal rust with my Elantra, but due to accidental gutter rub when my wife opened it. I just applied Turco rust converter to protect and prevent it from rusting.

You actually had the car rustproofed beyond what comes from the factory? It's generally not considered to be a good idea on cars with galvanized sheet metal and good factory corrosion protection. The issue is that the rustproofing coating can plug drain holes and lead to water accumulation inside doors and rocker panels, which leads inevitably to rust.

AFAIK, Hyundai does not offer rustproofing, at least not in the US. If it was dealer applied, it's probably an aftermarket product (or actually done by a third party) and it could actually void your perforation warranty.

I'm not sure if the dealer did the rust proofing at all, all I can remember was them making a big deal that it had rustproof protection, and to bring it in for rust checks and repairs if needed.

Just looked up the paperwork.
It's from the dealer.
Looks like it's done (or taken care of) by the dealer, the rustproofing.
The protection options;
Rust prevention - chemical - yes
Rust prevention - electronic - no
Sound & Underbody Protection - yes
Paint protection - no
Surface rust protection - no
Upholstery protection - no
Rip, tear & Burn protection - no

That's what the dealer was offering.

Here's part of the Bill Of Sale showing rust and underbody protection, and extended warranty:

Now I'm curious to see what the factory rustproofing is like.
To know if the dealer did have the chemical rustproofing done.

The rustproofing on my car looks like honey, an amber colour, sticky.

Update on this.
I had the Touring in for an oil change, also had them check the transmission again, as it slips worse than before they re-programmed it.
I have not received any word from Hyundai about the rusting doors, so I asked the service tech to look into that too, if they have an answer on it.
As I'm going to the waiting area, I see the service manager and say hello.
He informs me Hyundai has approved the rust repairs.
I was so glad to hear.
I was ready coming into the dealership for the worse (no approval), so had rehearsed my reply.

When ready to pick up the car, the service tech informs me the transmission will be replaced, under warranty.
I have heard of tranny issues in the Touring, so have been keeping a close eye on ours.
I didn't think it was acting up too badly, but my wife complains about it more than I.

Glad we may be getting a solution to this issue too.

I'm glad to hear that they're covering the cost of the repairs.

Well I got the car back from the dealer.
Doors have been repaired and look good.
They even pulled the dent out of the rear passenger side door that made me notice the rust in the first place.
The dealer also replaced the transmission.

The rust repairs and tranny were all covered under warranty.

That good to know, now obverse the repaired area if the problem re occurred the only way to solve it is by replacing the whole door.
