Hey gang- I need some help!

Today was project "get ready for fall/winter" for the Entourage. My list today included new rear brakes w/ new rotors and new rear shocks. I'm at 55k and all of them were worn out.

New rotors and parking brake service? Check!
New rear shocks? Check! Drives and handles much better!
New rear pads? mmm... not so much.

Here is what happened. I followed all of the directions from HMA service- great! Now, I have done brakes before, but always front- these were my first for rear (ha ha!) Old pads came off just fine, new pads fit just fine.

Problem: How to compress the piston on the caliper? I tried -clamp (quick web search showed that was wrong- I stopped). I rented a caliper compressor tool from autozone, but none of the fittings fit the piston to make it turn clockwise. The sun was setting, I put the old pads back on with the new rotors for now- they still have a little life in them.

How do I acquire the "special tool" listed in HMA service? What are my alternatives to get these to compress? I really hate to go to the dealer or brake shop and pay them for a pad slap when I have done 90% of the service already.

What say you team Elantra?

Your pistion looks like mine on my HD when I looked in hmaservice - just a large hollow cup piston.

If it's just a hollow cup - any c-clamp will do with your old brake pad used as the block to push back in the piston.

Might take some effort but it doesnt look like the screw type piston.

did you pop the brake booster cap? i have done that before...i forget to pop the cap and the caliper would not go anywhere because of the back pressure.

It does not appear to be a push/pull type piston- although I could be wrong. I tried multiple times w/ the c-clamp- absolutely no movement whatsoever. They will turn with some force though- although all of my turning clockwise did nothing for movement.

I did pop the master cylinder cap.

Derek, do you know what this "special tool" is?

According to HMA -

This is your caliper -

And this is the "special tool required"

From this place -

If this is the case, it's just a caliper push tool and not the circular screw type.

I think you just need to give it some more oomph when turning the caliper reset tool.

Sometimes they get stuck but a good hard turn will free it up.

Sounds like the piston is frozen. You may need a new caliper.

Have you tried to compress on the other rear caliper? If that one slides back in at least you know it is a caliper issue.

Thanks guys. Yes, I tried both methods on both sides.

If they were frozen, would it be fair to say there would not be any/ minimal rear brake power? The reason I ask is that the new rotors are already starting to look "polished".

I may swing by home depot and grab a different C clamp- maybe it will work better than my Irwin speed clamp that I always use.

If the pads are still being held in contact with the rotors, they'll take the manufacturing marks off the surfaces. I'm thinking that your rear calipers are frozen.

Yep. Milehighhyundai, Is the Entourage still under warranty? If so im thinking that they might be covered. It hard to believe that with 50kmiles that the calipers would do that. idk just a thought.
