besides...how much better can your sentra actually be? what makes IT such a great race car?

Who has raced an Elantra in road racing? No one I know. However, that doesn't make it a bad car. In fact I think it might do very well as long as you pick the right class. As for drag racing, who cares IMO. And autocross, well I think I can do very well in FSP with r compounds. I think the biggest drawback for our cars being competetive in street tires is because the tires get too hot. I tire with the right temp range will make it very tough to beat. We'll see next year anyway.

there are a lot of hyundai clubs.. and i've seen hyundais in supposed 'race teams'...

but never have i seen a 'hyundai racing' team.

other than the old Hyundai Motorsports AWD White tibby from Canada in Rally.. but thats probably not something you were going for..

Let me start by saying the SE-R is no M3 but with mods it's pretty darn close (for a lot less money and prestige)

I wouldn't really know where to start to explain why. The SE-R has a better chassis, MUCH better engine (stock it revs to 7500rpm). I could go on for days.
Take each car stock for stock and the SE-R is faster, corners much better, lighter, stiffer chassis, WAY better brakes ect....
Yes, I'm sure the Elantra with EXTENSIVE mods can be a great track car but for the money you can start with a more race ready chassis. I even think the Civic is better. (I used to have one)
Plus the fact the SE-R has it's own race series must mean something. Here read up on it:

I would be down right afraid to take my Elantra on a road course in stock form. I did take my SE-R on the track YEARS ago with just an inake, muffler and a crappy set of springs on the stock struts. I was nipping at the heals of a new (at the time 1999) well driven Corvette. The only place he could lose me was on the straits. Back in the turns I was up his ass!

If I was only allowed to do one thing on the Elantra to make it road racing ready it would be the brakes. I have cooked mine on just some aggresive mountain road driving. The same roads I've done in my SE-R in stock form as well as my old '97 Civic Hatch.

well the reason you bought the elantra in the first place was cause it was a cheap economy car... the SE-R is the sportier version of the sentra the way the STI is the sportier version of the Impreza and the Evo to the Lancer and the SI to the Civic. Unfortunately Elantra has no "sportier" version since the GT isn't much of an upgrade from the GLS (in fact the hatch is said to handle worse than the sedan) However an SE-R sentra starts off a couple grand higher than the Elantra and so you're paying for that extra performance... if you put that couple grand into the Elantra as well you could prolly have a car on par to what that SE-R does stock.

and if you didn't get them, enjoy eating brakes every 25k.

Not to mention the weight bias of the sentra is far more heavy to the front than the XD.

Oh, and the interior is a late 90's dungeon of hard plastic.

CleanElantra, you can't compare a stock Elantra to an SE-R. My mom's 92 200sx hadles horribly compared to my Elantra, and it handled horribly compared to my 1985 Ford Escort. That's stock-for-stock, apples-to-apples.

Take an Elantra, with stiffer springs and struts, stiffer swaybar, larger, lightweight wheels and sticky tires, bigger rotors and better pads, and a powerchipped motor, and you might have a somewhat fair comparison. In that form, I would bet that the Elantra would give the SE-R a pretty good race.

If you want to compare old elantras to your 94 sentra.. take into consideration that the old elantras (j1 generation) had many interchangeable parts to the mitsu evo/mirage so perhaps far more aftermarket than whatever we get in our XDs...

Roy, no such thing as a '92 200SX tock.gif Do you mean 240SX? If so, you don't know what a good handling car is like. A 240 is RWD for starters. They handle AWESOME!! Even stock! Again, I've driven many of them stock and fully race preped.
All I have to say is I see Nissans at track events all the time. I have YET to see a Hyundai. Even a Tiburon. Don't get me wrong I love my Elantra and I would love to see/drive a track ready Elantra! However the Elantra chassis isn't up to the hard vigors of road racing without extensive mods so they just aren't popular.
Oh and do the mods you mentioned to a Sentra and you'll have a REAL sick race car!
I'm curious about the "powerchipped motor" Where does one get this chip?
