Ok so today is my first official day as an elantra owner. I bought the car over the last week in payments. Last night I made the last payment, drove it almost 2hrs home, and everything ran great! But this morning I ran an errand early, I got there no prob, then on the way home wich was an 20-25 min drive as I got close to home I noticed a smell, saw steam coming from under the hood and a high temp on the gauge. We'll it was like 3 more blocks to my house and not quite at "redline" yet I drove the rest of the way home. Immediately I opened the hood and saw coolant had sprayed around I. There also I heard a boiling noise over the head where it seemed to be coming from the air intake system!?? So if any of you could help me diagnose this problem I'd be a true believe in online forums, lol. Also there were some odd small specks in the fluid the are shown in the picture of the top of the radiator the we're white/yellow and sticky/squishy?! I don't think I'd ever seen y his before.[indent][/indent]

The second pic shows where I heard a "boiling" sound coming from after inspection

It looks like that radiator cap is loose. You should have stopped when you saw that it was overheating. Three blocks can be the difference of no damage and a blown head gasket/warped cylinder head. Pull the oil cap and see if the oil is mixing with coolant. If you just bought the car, have them diagnose it.

Good eye, the cap is loose but only because I was checking things out after the car cooled, and here 3 blocks isn't really a lot it still hadn't red lined yet but I'm thinking it is the head gasket. I was gonna do cams and pulleys anyways but didn't want to do them this soon. I wanted an inspection sticker first! Also the car was bought n sold privately so no dealer to blame!

Im willing to bet the radator is cracked on top. Just from the way it sprayed the engine. There is coolant that runs through the throttle body, that could have been way you hear it there.

Does that mean I'd have to replace the whole red and fan? Or just the rad? And that odd pills stuff is prob stop leak then!

Just the radiator. It takes a bout an hour or so to do. Do use any stop leak.

Boy posting photos is a total pain in the ass!! Almost every photo I take is un uploadable! Too big etc. But anyways it was a Crack in the radiator, I removed it and I'll have another in tomorow. Is the tiburon radiator compatable? I haven't seen to compare but would it be better if I plan to increase hp etc.?

Use photobucket and the /img tag and post them in the text box. As for tiburon , i believe its the same one. Just get the one for the car.

"The one for the car" what do you mean by that? The one for an elantra or.... because the overall project is to sue this baby up!! And I've read a lot about saving $ by using tiburon parts, suspension, clutch, etc. -------------------- A proud member of the club.

He's talking about the radiator. I think it's the same radiator on the Elantra and Tiburon, and possibly the 01-05 Sonata, but don't quote me on that. Check out RockAuto, selecting for both cars, and see if the part numbers line up.

Boy posting photos is a total pain in the ass!! Almost every photo I take is un uploadable! A lot of forums don't even let non-VIP members directly upload pics from their own computer at all. Just saying. Plus, the pics you're uploading should be reduced in size. They're very big for forum use. Oh and welcome to EC. -------------------- |
