I know on the '04 OEM Kenwood when you turn the car on it will say "Code On" or "Code Off" initially.

It comes default with no code set. If one is set and you don't know it, you have to send it to Kenwood to have it unlocked.

Another option is to get one of http://www.ebay.com/itm/321292747956. It is what came with the '04, and I believe takes the same plug (it has the 13 pin connector).
