This is my first Hyundia/Elantra and my first post. I've Been looking at some of the towing post here but it seems they are of older models. So I'm wondering about my 2013 Elantra. Is the A/T any different or better than older models?

I'm looking to tow a open motorcycle trailer w/bike; figure 500-700lbs. Almost all highway towing; the car will have two adults + luggage. If the local test drive works well I hope to cruise at 70 mph but will I need to be in fifth or will the tranny be ok in sixth on level road?

The brakes and power on this car seem pretty stout so I'm not to concerned with those as long as I'm gentle to the car. The A/T is my primary concern.

I got a Curtis hitch set up for my wife's Elantra and hooked everything up. With a 3.5" rise ball mount the trailer sat perfectly level. I figured the trailer and bike combo probably weighed in at less than 700 lbs.

With the ECO set to "OFF" the car pulled the trailer just fine but the transmission often stayed in 5th gear to maintain 70 mph. The fuel mileage went from the high 30's at 75 mph without a trailer to around 25 mpg with a trailer at 65-70 mph. Dang I was hoping to at least break 30 mpg. What really sucked was once we got past Missouri the price of gasoline topped out at $4.25/gallon. The only thing that was worse was coming back to 95 degree weather. I thought a BMW emblem would be a good way to piss off BMW owners. Turns out that it pissed off my wife too.

This may be why the fuel mileage went to hell:

You're right. My in-laws family zeroed in on that BMW propeller and thought it was a Beemer. The first thing we heard was "You got a BMW?!". I remember back in the '80's I had a prof in college that stuck a couple of Ferrari badges on his new Subaru XT. Everyone thought it was some kind of new limited edition Ferrari. He did it to prove a marketing point: Put something in a new wrapper and folks don't even care what's inside; it's all about image."

I laugh when I tell them "Yeah, the BMW was only $8 more than the Elantra". laugh.gif
