In the three times I tried to sign-in today...it took me an average of 5 tries each. what is the need for this? I literally sign-in to my online banking with less hassle.

I don't know if it's supossed to be a zero or the letter o.

a 7 or a 1 or an l or an i or an an L.

is this really needed?

All you need to do is stay logged in and this is a one time procedure. It is really necessary. The system has blocked spammers, malicious people trying to brute force their way in and other baddies. I do what I have to to keep this site clean and running. Actually you should be glad I do this as there has been a rash of bad guys/bots trying to steal passwords at forums everywhere and this has stopped them in their tracks here.

One little tip on the captcha. Refresh the image until it's more readable for you.

The security systems I have in place now have stopped over 10,600 known spam attempts/bad guys.

I think it's a needed feature coming from my background of work and I welcome it.

I dont have any issue if I stay logged in - not sure if you use IE, but firefox and chrome are great replacements smile.gif

Ok so you see that security is a big deal. Maybe the security here isn't as "ridiculous" as you said. wink.gif

Now if we used RSA SecureID's.... The procedure would totally suck. I have a few of these tokens I have to use to sign into some of my company's stuff.... granted RSA got hacked it still sucks to use them. Every 60 seconds the passcode changes!

So use one browser for secure browsing (prøn... lol) and another for commonplace shiz. What's to hack from this site? Anyone who gleans info from here is likely to gain whatever they want from any source beyond your control anyhow. If someone really wants it, they'll get it. Search 'HBGary' on ArsTechnica for an instructive discourse on this very matter.

Yep, we use those too. In conjunction with additional software to ensure security compliance. PITA.

Is it that big of a security risk to set the cookies for this site to remain? I have my cache set to clear when closed, but have added a few cookies as exceptions.

^I'd think not but that's a great idea and forgot that those options are available in most modern browsers.
