ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Power Zone _ Beta Head Work

Posted by: J2Elantra Mar 9 2016, 09:59 PM

A few weeks ago I noticed excessive oil consumption, about half of a quart every one hundred miles. As well as occasional black smoke coming from the exhaust. There's no visible oil leaks. So I assumed the one hundred and ninety thousand mile piston rings were starting to show their age. The compression test showed that all cylinders were between 210-215 psi. So one would assume that the rings are actually in decent condition. Now I believe the valve stem seals are worn. I figured if I were to install new valve stem seals, I would rather install them on the better flowing solid lifter Beta 2 non-cvvt cylinder head. So I acquired a 2002 Elantra head for fifty dollars.
And then I figured If I were to take the time to install another head, I may as well take a bit more time and install a decked Beta 2 head with head work.

I'm about six hours into this project and probably have another ten to go. I'll need to get an extension for the Dremel.
It will probably be a few weeks until I will be able to finish and install the head.

Here are the before and the halfway finished exhaust ports:

Very nice. Should pick just some nice gains with the cams.

Looks nice. Want to come work on mine (with almost 230k on it)?

Update: I'm only about half way done. A lot of my time has been going into my S10, which required much more work than I previously thought. I did change jobs a month ago, which gives me more free time.

LOL at my original post, I estimated 16 hours. It'll probably be closer to 40 when It's all said and done.

I had planned to use the two 240 duration Beta 1 exhaust cams in this head. But I've been thinking about using a Beta 2 cvvt intake camshaft on the intake side. It's 250 Duration but requires a bit more modification to fit than the Beta 1 Exhaust cam did to fit.

I would love to have the means to just throw at a project like this... she may not be the loudest screamer on the block, but she'll have it where it counts.

Well, It's almost done. It'll definitely be finished next week though.

Update:

The head is 98% done. The new gaskets, head bolts and other misc parts arrived. I went with an oem 2001+ two layer mls head gasket. I believe it's .010 thinner. So it'll be equal to decking the head .050 The compression should be at least 11.0:1

My friend gave me a set of 4G63T valve springs. They're a bit stiffer than the Beta 2 springs.

I was at Dyno Day today and figured I'd do a "before" dyno and go again next month with the new head.

Did two runs, it made 131WHP/129FTLB and 132WHP/129LBFT the second run.
Current performance mods: $36 Ebay intake and various junkyard parts.

Well this took a few months longer than I anticipated...

So the story goes: I bought the Beta 2 head, spent a long ass time working on it. Then found a microscopic crack between the valve seats.
Sent the head to a machinist. He pulled out two of the valve seats, welded the crack, pressed in new valve seats. Did a valve job and shimmed the lifters. It took a LONG time to get the head back. I decided to replace the bearings and piston rings while it was apart. Then I found an excellent deal on new OEM 1.8 liter pistons. $10 each...

Well I FINALLY put the car back together, and... I love driving it, if you have the means I highly recommend picking one up.

The 1.8 pistons alone take it from the stock 10.3:1 compression to 11.0:1, plus the head was decked 40 thousandths. So the compression is around 12.0:1 it seems to run fine on 93 octane. I also used the stiffer 4g63t valve springs.

The car DEFINITELY pulls harder. The next dyno day is in two weeks. I would be shocked if the gains are less than 10whp. I'm going to guess at least mid to high 140's.

It's not a lot of power but it helps if you compare the power to weight ratio to an Elantra XD.
132whp J2 (2300lbs) is equal to a 166whp XD (2900lbs)
145whp J2 (2300lbs) is equal to a 183whp XD (2900lbs)
Plus my car has much shorter gearing which helps a lot.

I set the SAFC to + 20% from 3500-5500 and + 15% from 6000-7000 for a base tune and then gradually lean it out from there. It actually ran low 13's (afr) until 6000, then mid 12's. So the engine definitely breathes better now. These engines seems happiest at mid to high 12's, so I will have to add more fuel below 6,000

136whp 136 ft lb... sad.gif

Posted by: bhorste Nov 5 2016, 08:37 PM

Not bad numbers. Just how open is the intake?

Posted by: J2/RD Nov 6 2016, 09:00 AM

Crappy numbers. The runs were done on a Dynojet in 3rd gear. So the numbers are rather optimistic.

+4hp That's a 3% increase in power. Terrible... The compression alone should add 3% or more.

The car ran 12.2-12.8 afr 4,000-6750 rpm. So it should be a better tune than the first dyno.
Ignition timing is between 25-28 at wot.

@ Bhorste the stock intake manifold is untouched. It's not the biggest restriction. So cutting it apart and porting it and welding it back together wouldn't be worth it.

Well I was hope you would get more, but not bad at the wheels. The intake could be coaking the flow at thus point.

I don't think so. Even the nice Airram intake manifold that's made for high rpm power, only makes a couple hp over the stock intake on an NA build.

Yeah I was hoping for more. On another forum there's a guy with the same mods making 151whp. And plenty others making more power than me with less.

I'd keep playing with the tuning and I bet you'll find the power you're lacking.

3rd is closest to 1:1 in the 'box?

4th is closest, 1.04. The dyno owner refused to run it in 4th. I guess he thought the engine would blow up during the 35 minute 4th gear pull.

I'll going to figure it out, there's power hiding somewhere. Lol

Please tell me you're being facetious... 35 minutes?! tongue.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif If it's as open as you claim, it should pull no problem...

Lol yeah. The 3rd gear pull feels almost that long when there are 50 people pointing and laughing at me for bringing an Elantra to a dyno.

EDIT
Sorry for that outburst.

Haha yeah it happens.

Lol at my previous post about how much better it ran after the install. I guess the gains were only psychological. Perhaps due to driving my slow ass S10 for three weeks while my car was torn apart. Then I drive the Elantra and "omg racecar!!!..." haha

I am disappointed about the lack of gains, but whatever, $#!^ happens.

Anyway, I guess the next thing i'm going to do is replace the 2" crush bent exhaust and see if it helps at all.

Here are a couple videos:

Shifting way to soon, but whatever.

Not to bad.
