Had the third service done this morning on my 2010 Elantra GLS Touring Sport. I noticed that there is some oil all around the edges of the valve cover where it meets the head.

When I questioned the service desk about this they had a tech inspect it and he said it was only what they call "sweating" and is not covered by the "bumper-to-bumper" warranty.
I said but that is oil so the integrity of the gasket has failed. He said no...it is quite common and warranty will not cover this.

Any thoughts on this? Am I being fed a line here? I love my car but this is my first ever new car and I am very disappointed. My 11 yr old Subaru Forester has two valve covers and
neither of them have this "sweaty" leak. My GFs car is a 2004 Chevy Cav and that too is nice and dry around the same area.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Have you wiped up the oil from the sides of the cover where the leakage is occuring and re-inspect a couple weeks later?

Another member here has some oil leakage around his gasket as well and a few members here said it wasnt a huge deal either but here's to hoping other members chime in.

I'd clean it up and re-inspect it in a couple weeks.

Is it normal, no.
Sweating it loosing a fluid through pores. In humans it is a good thing and keeps you cool. With any gasket in an automobile, it is not supposed to happen.

As said, wipe the area down and check it in a few weeks (as well as checking the oil level).

If it is a very minimal leak, then they probably will not do anything about it under warranty.

It's happens to mine too. You could also check that the value cover is tightened to spec.. I believe 7.9 inch pounds...

Mine is leaking the same way front and back, and the oil pan gasket is also leaking like this. I scrub it all off every oil change and by the next one it is built up with dust and dirt and requires cleaning again which is really annoying because the tops of the fuel injectors get covered in oily grime and are really tough to clean. I was also told its not leaking bad enough to warrant replacing the gasket, and that if I open it up and change the gasket they may void my warranty.... /sigh

When they say normal I think they mean "Yes, we normally see this".... unfortunately for them, that does not make it acceptable.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will have to live with this but my next vehicle may not be a Hyundai.

What irks me most is the attitude of the people of the dealership when they trivialize their customers' concerns.
I also haven't winter driven this car yet so I will have to monitor it next spring. I got stuck twice early last winter
as the all seasons on this are really bad in icy conditions.

I was told by the salesman I dealt with that I should have had the electronic stability control turned off and I would
have been OK. But to my mind that seems to be the opposite of what ESC is all about. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Was the sales person correct and why?

My 11 yr old Forester is what I use in winter and despite its age, it performs admirably......without any leaks from
either of its valve covers ;-)

Thanks once again for the help and advice.

Ralph.
