Oh... Look in the rack itself? Variable speed assist needs an electronic valve of some sort. Do you see any electrical connections anywhere in the steering system? -------------------- QUOTE (doc1987 @ Aug 29 2007, 02:33 PM) call me a perfectsiotist but i... |

The XD does have speed-sensitive (I think actually RPM-sensitive) power steering. It's nice, but slaloming in autocross it probably doesn't work right. I think that's a common problem with all hydraulic power steering, from what I've read. Here's (RIP) Sport Compact Car Magazine's review of the Mazda RX-8, saying its steering is "assisted directly by an electric motor, so there's none of the hydraulic assist nonsense of virtually every other car's power steering. Whip the wheel from full right to full left, autocross style, and you will never outrun the hydraulics. Even the electrically driven hydraulic system in the MR2 Spyder can't claim that. "
http://www.modified.com/features/0305scc_mazdarx8/index.html Also Autoblog's review of the Fusion SEL mentions its power steering does better in slalom than the Camry's. I've felt that in my '03 when mock slaloming or in a series of quick corners like in small traffic circles that are fun to drive fast on, so I know what you're talking about, slowgls. It can really go away if you steer fast. I just don't know if there's a solution. As far as the variable-assist thing, I can't find an official mention of speed-sensitive power steering for the Elantra, but it's mentioned in several reviews: Cars.com, Automobile.com, Automotive.com and TheAutoChannel.com: http://www.cars.com/go/crp/research.jsp?ma...mp;aff=national http://www.automobile.com/2003-hyundai-elantra.html http://www.automotive.com/2003/43/hyundai/...ions/index.html http://www.theautochannel.com/vehicles/new...lantra_GLS.html Besides guys, drive around a parking lot at low-RPM in third gear and at high-RPM in first gear and tell me the steering doesn't feel different. -------------------- Help keep ElantraClub running and free for all Elantra owners: Donate.

spinning the pump at higher rpms and turning teh wheel a lot creates enough heat quickly (in the summer especially) to cook the fluid, even faster if it's old OEM fluid that's been in there for 7 years.
You can eleminate MOST of that problem by flushing it out with a good synthetic fluid. Thsi is the important information I wnted to get out ther, but when Colin comes in he usually muddies it up so bad that the GOOD info gets lost in his non-pertaining BS. -------------------- Founding Member of the Indiana Chapter of the Teeny Weeny Club for Secure Adult Males

Well Bob thanks for your response.I did change my fluid already but i think i will change it again to synthetic fluid. So than a different pulley would be a waste of time than?

don't quibble
pictures! I think this "speed sensitive steering" is actually just physics. It will take less effort to turn an object in motion than it will to turn an object not in motion. There is no initial energy consumption, just the transfer of forward to lateral energy. There is no electronic steering control on the XD or XD2 Oh... Look in the rack itself? what? in the rack itself? That in itself is completely and i mean COMPLETELY ludicrous. An electronic solenoid inside a sealed hydraulic unit, so if that "unit" that can't exist, goes bad, thats the entire 2k steering system??? yeah, uhm yeah -------------------- (07:01 PM) elantragt - Hell I couldn't even sell our calendars to all the people who had their car in it! lol

Crank pulley or p/s pulley? A smaller crank pulley would trun the pump slower, that may be a good thing.
I wonder if a stronger pump, one with more flow, might be more benficial? I remember that it doens't take auto-x'ing to make the p/s system to overheat. When we ran US50 through WV, that 180 miles of twisted wicked ness we took a break about 90 miles in. The p/s sfluids was boiling over then as well. -------------------- Founding Member of the Indiana Chapter of the Teeny Weeny Club for Secure Adult Males

Would you need a stronger pump? I don't know if such thing actually exists.
I would think changing to stainless, non swelling lines, using synthetic blend fluids and liquid to air intercooling the fluid would be quite sufficient. You would literally have to R&D and manufacture a stronger pump. -------------------- (07:01 PM) elantragt - Hell I couldn't even sell our calendars to all the people who had their car in it! lol

Iwas thinking a pump off a larger car like the XG. I was planning on a cooler line setup before the Swift came to be. I would think a 5' section of pipe bent into a "U" in front of the condensor would suffice. That along with the synth fluid "should" combat the biggest issues of heat buildup.

What about a power steering cooler like an inline oil cooler kind of deal?
