ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ i30 Based General _ Elantra Touring Pic

I'm sorry but this pic drives one thing home... the back end of this is way too tall, way too boxy/bulky looking. Doh.gif They should have brought the hatch over instead. Oh well. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice vehicle, just not my taste.

Wagons ROCK!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: fgummett Mar 18 2008, 01:59 PM

I'm sure it has a wonderful personality rolleyes.gif

Posted by: mregt02 Mar 18 2008, 02:00 PM

It's not super sexy but the utility factor helps deter the looks. Like Bob said "Fraggle rock" or something like that.... I think he's been drinking.

Posted by: edge718 Mar 18 2008, 03:02 PM

That thing screams Mazda 5

Posted by: Silent Wolf Mar 18 2008, 03:37 PM

Mazda 5/ Kia Rondo

Boxy n fugly

Posted by: MEly Mar 18 2008, 04:05 PM

Seriously... excuse me while I throw up.

Hyundai definitely missed the cue this time. Oh well - at least I know which Elantra I won't be looking at.

Posted by: sciphi Mar 18 2008, 04:08 PM

It's a bit tall. A bit sport-ute-ish in the appearance. I much prefer the look of the J2 wagon. Also, those massive rear pillars scream "accident waiting to happen". You could likely hide an XD in that blind spot!

Posted by: cobas Mar 18 2008, 06:10 PM

Oh... come on, it's not that.... it's not so..... I mean.... ugh.

Posted by: xdforme22 Mar 18 2008, 07:38 PM

Haha, it is pretty ugly. However, Hyundai did get the Genesis Coupe design right. Maybe the touring design was pieced together during a series of Friday afternoon intern meetings.

Posted by: Toecutter Mar 18 2008, 08:51 PM

I'm tryin', but that thing is worse than beer goggle ugly.

Posted by: cobas Mar 18 2008, 10:23 PM

I've had threee glasess of wine but it's still uugly

Posted by: 02CanGT Mar 18 2008, 11:20 PM

The metaphorical under-30 beauty from a specific world region getting older and turning into not staying beautiful.
This Elantra has turned into it's mother.

Not nice. Its an ugly clone of the shipping container wagons everyone makes.

Posted by: elantragt Mar 18 2008, 11:35 PM

Even though it's very similar, the hatch looks much better.

This just shows the concept of a sporty Elantra is totally lost on the brains over at Hyundai USA. fit.gif

Posted by: Toecutter Mar 18 2008, 11:38 PM

I don't much care for the looks of either, but I will concur that the hatch is the better of the two.

Does anyone else see Lumina APV/Silhouette/Trans Sport minivan in that? All it needs is sliding doors.

Posted by: Bigs Mar 19 2008, 06:46 AM

come on man, I just had breakfast.

The hatch is way nicer...

Posted by: Silent Wolf Mar 19 2008, 07:34 AM

Ya hatch is nicer, but i doubt i'd buy it either. I prefer the fastback look.

Posted by: cobas Mar 19 2008, 08:15 AM

That hatchback has bigger wheels, side sills, it's a nicer color shot in better light and backdrop.
The wagon has a tint job that my mom could have done.

Posted by: elantragt Mar 19 2008, 09:50 AM

Enrique, that's all true so I found the cars in full side profile. Wagon still looks boxier, crappier and less sporty.

My main point here is I believe that Hyundai USA has their heads up their ass at times. Clearly they don't give a damn about the loyal Elantra hatchback owners/fans and to be honest, that sucks. I'm not blaming Hyundai, they designed a vehicle in Europe that should have been a replacement for the GT... the i30, but we're not getting it. thumbsdown.gif If I sound a little pissed off, I am. Hyundai is turning the Elantra into something few enthusiasts would want and it directly affects this club. Not that they needed to listen to members here but the poll below clearly shows enthusiasts don't like the wagon (except Bobzilla lol):

But the Elantra Hatch was so ugly. . . I can understand going away from it. . . biggrin.gif

No offense to you "loyal hatchback owners" I just never liked the hatch. Wagons, OK. Sedans, OK. Hatches, no. I see hatch and think Chevette. . .it's a subconsicous reaction.

And to compete with the new El Camino, the Elanchero. biggrin.gif

(It was a quick chop, I apologize for the poor quality of it.)

Great post! Thanks for the 2 profile pics. I agree 100%, the wagon is ugly compared to the hatchback. The lines are just better and the back end is not as bulky. I think losing the roof rack might help but I still perfer the hatchback.

Posted by: fgummett Mar 19 2008, 01:07 PM

I agree that the hatch looks much better... having grown up in the UK with "hot hatches" I would rather buy a hatch than an estate car (wagon) but in those pix I must admit I much prefer the wagon's wheels B)

Easy swap^ biggrin.gif

mad.gif ......................... I got a great idea! Why don't Hyundai bring both over to America and let us decide. Give the hatch a little more sportyness; make the wagon a little more family friendly so that Elantra name can appeal to a wide range of people. Didn't they learn a lesson from the GT? huh.gif

Posted by: elantragt Mar 19 2008, 03:06 PM

Or just have brought over the hatch. I'm sure the cargo capacity with the seats folded down in the hatch is decent. Look, the Elantra sedan is pretty generic looking. The new wagon is boxy. I think bringing the sportier hatch would have been the way to go. Then again Hyundai tends to do exactly the opposite of what I want. laugh.gif

Posted by: winc Mar 19 2008, 05:26 PM

^^^^ Maybe it's time to start begging for the wagon? rofl.gif

Posted by: Braddale Mar 24 2008, 03:05 PM

I keep hoping that at one point they will bring the hatch here......maybe they are introducing the wagon first as it seems that North Americans have to have the biggest of models. Then down the road introduce the hatch....

I just hope one of the World Engines will eventually make their way into the Elantra.

I would buy that. They could call it the Elantino.

They are fond of saying "most ________" blank in its class. If they are after the Matrix, Vibe and Mazda3 hatch, they need as many marketing angles as they can. I like the hatch better, too. The Elantra Touring hatch and wagon both look a lot like the Saturn Astra 5-door hatch. Both have European roots.

Just scanning through some of these older FD posts, and have to comment.

Having the wagon for a few years now, she's grown on me.
The hatch looks odd to me, as you don't see any around here in Canada.

Without the roof rack, the wagon does look better.
Other mods will help.
