Hello

your opinion about heat insulation on the header:

I'm thinking to do the same for my header, but not sure....

Heat insulation is great except for one part. It keeps underhood temps cooler, helps exhaust gas travel faster and looks cool. Only part that isnt great is it speeds up the wear of the metal of the header. I prefer a ceramic coating applied to the inside and outside of the header. Keeps the heats from absorbing into the metal in the first place, so you get performance results of header wrap with no extra wear, Downfall is its usually more expensive.

and you don't get the pancake smell of the heat wrap as it's "curing" lol

You know, I was thinking about doing a wrap for the manifold I just got. After hearing about this, I'd buy a stock in Ihop or Perkins if I were all of you.

The only reason I'm thinking I might not do this is because this engine needs the backpressure or else you're going to power on the low end. When you put on the wrap, it is increasing the velocity of the exhaust gas.

I'm so torn.

The difference in the backpressure on the low end wont be noticable. It only increases the velocity because it retains the heat, preventing the gasses from slowing down when they cool. Its not the same as increasing the diameter of the pipe, which will effect your bottom end because of loss of backpressure and hurt top end because of cooling exhaust gases(as they expand to the bigger area of the bigger pipe, they cool and slow down).

you won't notice any power gains. it will reduce the heat underhood and increase the chance of manifold/header cracking.

I plan to install SRI,
and look on heat insulation first of all as ability to decrease temperature under the hood for short intake

I am a little confused about people saying that the metal will crack. Header wrapping would retain the heat in the piping which would retain heat in the metal longer then if it was unwrapped. This would allow the metal more time to cool down at a slower rate which would let the metal anneal better then if it was exposed directly to the air causing a more normalizing process and more rapid cooling increasing the chances of cracking.

If someone has a degree in metalurgy please correct me on my assumptions.

That seems like a pretty sound theory to me.

Anyone?

no, that pretty much sums it up. same thing with glass (that's how i treat cooling/heating metal) too fast or hot and it will melt/shatter, cool too quickly and it will crack/shatter so i think the wrap would help keep the temps in a manageable range for the piping to cool over time

The other option is a heat shield, either get one fabricated or DIY like mine ? http://www.hyperaustralia.com/forums/viewt...f=11&t=5903
