There's not really anything wrong with hand-over-hand, just so long as you keep track of where straight is. Most of the time you shouldn't even need to take your hands off the wheel, unless it's a tight hairpin. You lack control with hand over hand. Obviously you don't want to shuffle steer when it isn't necessary. For example, you should have your hands planted at 9 & 3 through most sweepers and slaloms. In fact, in the world of road racing the corners aren't nearly as tight and so the road racing guys rarely bother with shuffle steering because they're able to keeping their hands at 9 & 3 all the time. But shuffle steering is an important skill for autocrossing. If you're good at it, then you'll be significantly smoother and less frantic behind the wheel when it matters. -------------------- |

This is one thing I want to try in my lifetime, but don't want to completely embarass myself as I'm not much of a "gear" head. At least I can get some good tips from you guys and not look like a complete idiot! One day when I have a "fun" car I will take it out

I'd like to do it but I'm afraid of breaking something on my 10 year old car.
Looks like a lot of fun though. -------------------- |

I waited to autocross until I had a 'spare' car for commuting.

You aren't stressing the car anymore than the daily drive to work. I've broken more cars driving point A to point B then I've ever broken auto-x'ing. Stop making excuses and go try it!

I'd want to try it first on a "intro to autocross" course (not that they exist). Wider travel lane, corners that aren't so tight, etc. - so that there's more room to make an error without looking like a complete goober.
It's always looked fun to me. -------------------- |

Some regions have autocross schools. The Texas region has one every year. It was nice because you get a lot of seat time throughout the day, and you get some instructor time as well. I did the school twice and I remember the 2nd time my instructor told me I was steering by throttle which was good, but he also told me I wasn't looking far enough ahead. -------------------- |

You should see if there's a local club that offers a "school." I know that Detroit Region SCCA offers a school at the beginning of every season. One evening in the classroom and then one on the track with an experienced instructor. More seat time than you get at a normal autocross, plus you get instruction from the passenger's seat as well as before and after runs. Don't worry about looking like a doof. People get lost on courses ALL THE TIME. You lack control with hand over hand. Obviously you don't want to shuffle steer when it isn't necessary. Never really needed it that I remember, but I haven't competed in ~10 years. YMMV. -------------------- |

People are usually pretty friendly at these events I think, so you can both find someone to ride along with and someone to ride along with you who can tell you what you're doing wrong. I did that my first couple of runs and lucked out, the guy was a performance driving instructor at Summit Point.
