Installed this unit into my 2007 Elantra yesterday replacing the Pioneer DEH-P9850BT I had in there. The new unit fully supports my iPhone with a Parrot bluetooth kit built-in and of course can playback video from the iPod/iPhone on the large 7" touch screen.

Comparison of new and old:

Installation was pretty straight-forward but still took most of the day to get right. I cut the IR sender off my existing PAC SWI-X for the steering wheel controls and put a mono 3.5mm plug on it instead to plug into the back of the Alpine. I also ran the microphone cable up inside the driver's side A pillar and clipped the microphone to the top so it was closer. The bluetooth works great with my iPhone, even voice dialling.

The only hiccup with installation was having to take a hammer to the metal piece that is directly under the unit shown in the pic below.

It was slightly too high so I had to bang it to bend it down a bit. It was also a tight fit cramming the entire tail of 15 RCA plugs into a cavity in the dash just to use two of them for my sub.

The surround used is the American Metra double DIN mounting kit that I've reused from my old deck. I had to attack it pretty severely with a Dremel when I first got it to get it to fit right as the shape of the Aussie model is a fair bit different to the US one. Unfortunately it warped in the extreme heat last summer (got up to at least 50c in the car parked in the sun one day) so looks like I'll have to do it all over again.

Some more photos:

That looks awesome and if it did GPS navigation, it would kill the main reasons for doing the whole CarPC thing, IMO

I guess if you had the latest iteration of the iPhone you'd be there...? I doubt it would sync with the HU, but the info would display on the phone...

Very nice BTW

Great work there!!

How's it doing in the sun filled south? Do you get much glare?

Thanks for the comments. smile.gif

I have an iPhone with TomTom on it already so yeah GPS wasn't something I was really looking for however you can add a GPS module to it and use it with the touch screen.

Very warm sunny day here today and the screen is handling the glare well. It's a matt finish like older laptop screens which helps a lot. The Pioneer unit I had before had a curved glossy bit of plastic over the screen so it was completely impossible to see driving in the day.

My only small complaint with the unit so far is that the up and down arrows move a "cursor" through the menu items on the page instead of just moving the page. Seems kind of redundant given that it's a completely TOUCH-based screen... I guess it's because the iXA-W404 has the same interface but has a knob and buttons as well...

Great video review of the unit with the imprint and navigation modules here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9ogLzrX9XQ

looks fantastic , im looking for some basic DVD to replace my factory one

im just confused about the mounting kit i thought that any double din unit will be installed straight forward

my question is , is that mounting kit is really needed ? with any head unit or with some units only and how can i know if it is needed or not

Thanks

The opening isn't a standard double DIN size so yeah the mounting kit is needed.
As you can see from the photos I posted there are substantial areas at the top and bottom the kit covers that would otherwise be gaps.

This is a photo of my first single-DIN head deck without the dash kit.

As you can see there are big gaps all around it. Whilst driving I could see straight through to the wiring at the back.

Also be aware the Alpine I've got doesn't have any sort of CD/DVD drive in it. It only plays video from iPod and music from iPod or USB...
