Does it have auto climate control? If so, turn it up to 80° or so, see if it blows warmer air then. My Saab never blew "hot" air unless you cranked up the temp. Come to think of it, my Volvo C70 was the same way too. I think it's a Euro-car thing... only blows cold if turned all the way down, hot when turned all the way up, blended lukewarm or cool anywhere in between.

No, the A/C is manual. We've trying cranking the temperature gauge down and back up and... it kinda works! Not sure what happened there but it's been fine the last week or so. Fortunately it's been a very warm winter too.

Incidentally, I had the most boring commute the other day, cruising in moderate traffic at a constant 40-50mph... got 37mpg (a lot of highway). I'm tempted to hypermill it now.... a little.

It's nice to know the MPG you can get if you NEED to drive it like the tank is empty.

Four years later...

Long story short: It became clear that my wife wasn't going to take the GTI as her car and the DSG wasn't going to stop annoying me daily. Also in the last 65k miles, the '11 GTI went thru an idler pulley, a water pump, a fuel pump and all four ignition coils.

I did test-drive a used '14 Elanta GT. It's surprising how familiar the Hyundai shifter/clutch/brakes/seat ergonomics felt even ten years removed from my '03. With a 5-speed manual, it's a peppy and fun car to drive, even though it doesn't have the highway power of the GTI. It would've probably been the responsible and much cheaper choice. But...

... I don't have to be responsible right now and I'm going to enjoy that while it lasts. Despite the questionable reliability, VW addressed every annoyance I had with the previous GTI, (e.g. wheel design, throttle lag, the option to shut off the annoying BEEP upon locking it, etc), shaved off 100+ lbs, added about 20+ hp, 50lb-ft of torque and offered optional giant brakes and an LSD. How can I say no? I'll start budgeting for repairs. I think it's already been recalled! As a criticism, I will say the steering is numb and hard to keep centered at speed - the '03 Elantra GT still has that, cargo room and reliability on this one. But I am much happier with this one than I ever was with the '11 GTI and I hope to drive this one into the ground.
