Hi.
I tried with Search option but no good results. I didn't find any topic about buying used Elantra, and it would be very helpful to me if I could get some advice about what to pay attention when inspecting used Elantra.
I did found one in Toronto, and I will go to look, but I'm kindly asking you to give me some advice what to check and what to be aware of. The one I'm gonna look is one from the headline of topic, 2007 Elantra GLS Sport, with 129000 Km on ODO-meter, manual, sunroof...
Does this model has any usual problem like leaking head gasket, bad gearbox, bad steering rack or similar? What to expect at those Km's?

Thank you all in advance.
That would be our (mine and my wife's) firs car when I arrive in Toronto soon. We are newcomers and we have to be extra careful when buying a car because I don't have an experience with North American models jet.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome!

With that mileage, you'll want to check that the timing belt has been changed. Outside of that, as long as regular maintenance has been done, you should be fine.

Welcome to the club. For me I look to see how the car was cared for visually to help assess how it was maintained. Was the paint and interior cared for, are the wheels in decent shape, etc. Certainly I would expect some wear and tear, but you can normally tell if the person cared about the car. Other than that, check routine maintenance records and as a_v said check to make sure the timing belt was replaced which was due at 5 years or 60,000 miles (100k km). You would also probably want to check how much tread life is left in the tires, see how the brakes fee, and especially in Canada check for any potential rust issues. Other than that, these cars are fairly low maintenance and last if properly cared for. thumbsup.gif

Thank you for answers.
But, how to check maintenance record in Canada? I was told that cars often don't have service book, like they do in Europe.
Here in Europe, when you purchase a car you receive a service book where dealer, every time you bring a car for regular maintenance, confirms by his stamp that he did it. If you do service elsewhere, except at authorized dealer, your warranty is rejected if a need for warranty occurs. In addition, service record is tracked by dealer within its web application that was provided by manufacturer and if you want to inspect was the seller honest you check that at dealer.
What is the case in Canada, can anyone tell me?

It's up to the owner to maintain the maintenance books. Dealers will fill out the info if the owner brings it to the desk, but few do. My grandpa, my dad, and now I keep an "At-A-Glance" auto record book in the glove box for each car. I always enter my maintenance events and try to stay on top of gas fill-ups too. Unfortunately, most Americans and probably most Canadians don't care to take the time to maintain a book. I just recently bought a used car, and everywhere I went I would ask about maintenance logs and I rarely found a car that had one that was well-kept. I wound up getting a deal on an old car with low miles, but I turned right around and changed all belts, spark plugs, ignition wires, and air filter. I don't know if I'll ever be able to buy a used car and trust the maintenance records.

Open the hood, look at the pinch weld seams running from the windshield to the grill. Look for any patch work or bends. In the trunk, pull up the carpet. Look for bends, seams, welds and body panel glue.

Timing belt, flex pipe for exhaust.
