I am new to this forum, and I am new to Hyundais also!

I just purchased a 2016 Hyundai Elantra Limited phantom black about 10 days ago. To make this story short; my Fiance was trying to help scrape ice off my car today and she used the plastic ice scraper effectively on the glass...and then on the entire body of the car! Yes, I am thankful that I have someone who would go through all that effort to clear the car, but now I believe the entire body has small scratches all over it.

I'm worried because I just bought the car, I have never owned a brand new car, and I know nothing about fixing scratches (that appear to be just into the clear coat but possibly a few that went further).

I don't know all the warranty details and I just picked up new car insurance, so I'm not sure what is covered there, but I requested just about as basic coverage as I could get (to save money)!

It looks like there are a million tiny scratches on the body of my new Elantra and now I'm wondering what to do. Any help is hugely appreciated!!! What should I do?

- Take to my dealer and see if this 'accidental' scratching (she didn't mean to scratch it) can be buffed out or repaired?

- Reach out to insurance company to see if they would cover something like this? ...I'm emailing them after I'm done posting here.

- Go and purchase some detailing product from local Walmart/Lowes and try to repair myself?

I look forward to your help and responses!

Thank you,

Spencer J

Ouch. Welcome to Elantraclub, sorry it isn't under better circumstances.

Without seeing the damage in person, it's impossible for me to tell how deep the scratches are.
Hopefully it can be buffed out. A general rule of thumb is, if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, it will have to be wetsanded and then buffed.

I would take the car to a knowledgeable automotive detailer, they will be able to determine what can be fixed, what can't, and give you an estimate for repair cost. You could also ask local bodyshops, as they would know as well. But I would ask the detailer FIRST as the bodyshop is more likely to lie to you to in order to sell you a full paint job.

Basically if it needs ANY painting, file an insurance claim.

Welcome Spencer.

Sorry, can't really advise on how to fix the scratches myself.
Josh has some good answers.

I do advise you to keep a close eye on your Fiance when she tries to be helpful.

Thank you both. The majority are not deep enough to feel and can barely be seen in regular light (but are glaring with a flashlight and with direct sunlight are fairly visible) with the exception of a few that look deeper and may have chipped paint.

Based on what you've said, it doesn't sound like it is something I should attempt to repair myself, right?

My original thought was to save money and buy a Meguiars "kit" from Walmart because I assumed that I would pay a high price to have the entire car body buffed/repaired. But I guess there's no way to know without going to local shops and asking, so that's my next chore.

The quicker I get it fixed, the less likely I am to say something stupid to her and risk her calling off the wedding!!! - Just kidding.....

And I did join the forum to learn more about the car and just be part of a community of people with the same car since this is the first 'new' car I've purchased! Very proud of it and especially for the value.

Thanks again for the responses,

Spencer

I can understand why you might want to fix it yourself; considering the car is less than 2 weeks old, if it were my car - I'd bite the bullet and take it to the dealer - or a well known/REPUTABLE body shop. You want it to remain pristine. If that means shelling out a couple hundred to a body shop - do it. Better than dealing with an insurance claim and the deductibles and then 5 years worth of premium increases just for a new paint job.

If you don't want to try a repair yourself, I would say a body shop is your best bet. If the scratches are as light as I'm imagining from your description, they should buff out no problem, and a dab of touch-up paint for the chips.

Welcome to the Club! Hope it's just the clear coat that's scratched and it's something that doesn't take a lot of time/money to fix (and that you can forgive your fiance for that one).

Yes, she has been forgiven.

However, she has clear instructions (okay so I pleaded with her...) to check in with me anytime she has "good intentions" so I can find out just exactly what those are before she acts on them.

As for the car...I'm taking it into a local wash/detail shop to get it checked out and I'm going to bite the bullet and pay a little extra to make that black paint shine again.

Ps - I'm still marrying her in October! She's worth any damage to my brand new possessions, but I just hope we can keep it to a bare minimum from here on...

Thanks again for the responses,

Spencer

Well, hope that bullet isn't too expensive when you bite it. Those "good intentions" almost always come back to get you. It happened with my wife and her family when they wanted to buy me a guitar for my birthday but went to a shop that was only interested in hustling them for a sale. The upshot is that I now have a nice 12-string guitar (even if I had to pay for 1/4 of it myself).

Silver lining - you'll probably wind up with a better finish than you started with. Hyundai doesn't polish out the "orange peel" in their paint, so a good wax job shows tiny dimples and bumps all over the car when you look really close. If they buff out the entire surfaces, you'll wind up with a glass-smooth clear coat which you only find on higher-end cars like Mercedes who put that kind of attention (and $$) into their paint.
