ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Elantra General Discussions _ How's your Elantra holding up?

Posted by: elantragt Jan 9 2005, 11:13 AM

Have you had your car at least 6 months? Please let us know how it's doing. What problems if any have you had? What areas would you say are the high and low points of the Elantra?

Posted by: HumanMetal Jan 27 2005, 11:39 AM

Hey all!
I've had my Elantra GT for 7 months now, and I still get that great feeling everytime I drive it.I recently moved from Cali to Dallas and it registered 32.2 mpg on the digi counter. The only quirks I have noticed are, sometimes the "Passenger airbag off" will light up when there is someone in the seat, I did notice it only does it with my girlfriend and her daughter who are both light but weight more than the 56 lbs required for the airbag, and also sometimes the tranny seems to lag switching from 1st to 2nd, it's auto trans, I'm just about to hit the 10,000 mile mark. All in all I'm very happy with my Elantra, and I'm starting to notice more and more of them out on the streets now. thumbsup.gif

High Ponts - Smooth Ride, Great handling, even after all the rain we got in Cali last month I never felt like I wasn't "hugging" the road. The seats feel good and firm as they did 7 months ago, no signs of wear or sagging. We drove 1600 miles straight and never worried about breaking down smile.gif

Low Points - A few paint chips from the trip sad.gif , The two I mentioned above.

Purchased 2001 Elantra GT in Pewter 8/2001. Love the car... here's what's been fixed so far over the past 3 years... to my memory:

• Clicking sound in the overhead area (moon roof maybe). Mostly when hitting big bumps / holes. Had it since the beginning and even thought I've brought it in 5 times, Dealer can't find it!

• Whinning sound when AC comes on. Dealer fixed.

• Headlights and Fog Lights going out pretty often (one every 6 months or so). Dealer replaced them free and ran checks on the electrical system but found nothing wrong.

• Rear view mirror: Horrible constant rattling sound. Dealer replaced mirror.

Beyond that I'm super happy with the car!!! I did a HUGE analysis on what car to buy and the Elantra won (by far) for value / features.

Here's my car buying analysis page:

Bought my '04 hatchback last Xmas and aside from the cabin fan going out in June (replaced in 2 weeks), the trim tape around the rear doors and the clutch acting funny, it's been flawless since

Posted by: mac23 Jan 29 2005, 12:13 AM

02 Elantra GLS. 30,200 mls.

The only major problem i had fixed is the left front wheel bearing and that tape on the side of the door (popped out). All's been replace under warranty. They didn't do a good job on that tape thing though angry-hitselfonhead.gif it pop out again, this time on the passenger side rear door. Other than the usual howling sound that the car makes when i'm drivin on the freeway (going 80-90mph 676.gif ) the car is fine.

Posted by: mac23 Jan 29 2005, 12:15 AM

OH, and that moldy smell that the car emits after using the A/C.

Posted by: southpawboston Jan 29 2005, 07:54 AM

welcome to the club mac23, mywesael, nifty-stuff, and humanmetal!

the things you describe are all typical elantra problems and don't seem unusual! the only exception would be the front wheel bearing-- that's the first i've heard of that. it's usually the rear wheel bearings that go first.

Purchased my car on April 30th with 16 miles on it. Now it's January 29th, and I'm up to around 16,400. Oil changes every 4,000 miles. As long as I can keep it under 20k miles a year, then I'll have it paid off before my (purchased extended) 100k bumper-to-bumper warranty runs out, which suits me just fine.

Around 4k miles, the transmission started grinding horribly from 1st to 2nd at any shift point over 3k rpm. Babied it until I had a chance to get it to a dealer, at about 9.5k miles. They dropped a new transmission into it; now it shifts like greased butter.

Small rattles - one from somewhere in the driver's door, and one from what sounds like somewhere in the headliner where it meets the rear hatch... haven't gotten anyone to sit in the back at highway speeds on rougher roads to pinpoint it yet, but as soon as we get an over 60° day I'm gonna fatmat the entire mess, so hopefully that'll make it go away.

SLIGHT crinkling in the door tape. It doesn't bug me in the least. I'm not going to show my car, so meh. I can deal until it gets ugly.

I have had my 04 GT for 8 months and the only issue I had was my power steering motor broke. sad.gif The bad thing was it took two weeks to get a part and fix. mad.gif The big thing I learned is that I would not by a Sonata. thumbsdown.gif So my wife bought a Elantra GLS hatchback. thumbsup.gif

I haven't had my car for 6 months but have 6 months of driving on it and I must say I came across my first very serious disappointment with this car. After just 2 short months I alignment is off and after having it checked and the tires rotated I still have the problem. But even more irritating then that is that even the smallest amount of snow in the wheels will make the thing shake so bad my teeth rattle. What's up with that. I have never had a car do that before, at least not near the extent that this one does.
It is so bad that I spend much of my time cleaning out the wheels (which has little effect because it is in places I can't reach and the pressure washer only helps when the outside temp is reasonable) and I am seriously considering getting a beater winter car next year. Very disappointing to have to spend the time and money just to keep my car from taking me into a ditch. wacko.gif

I have had mine for just about a year now and it has over 20,000 miles so far. Up to this point the car has had no problems. I am still very happy with the car and love to drive it.

Had my '03 GT Hatch for 16 months now. Very happy with performance thus far. Only minor problems to report with 19,300 miles on.

-Black wrapping on the pillars is peeling slightly
-plastic/rubber strip along bottom of windshield warped
-plastic nuts that held spoiler on came off unnoticed and now are lost
-passenger side vanity mirror cover hinge broke
-parking brake needs adjusted

these may sound excessive, but let me assure you they are minor and will be dealt with by the dealership.

2001 5sp and I got over 150000km on it. never even changed the timing belt in it yet..... just oil and gas and 1 set of tires...... Im due for ffront brakes very soon...!!! great car...!!!

2004 hatch, 15,000 miles only problem I have is the constant smile on my face from driving this car. 2nd Hyundai 1st is a 2002 Santa Fe with 37,000 on it. It's been flawless up to now too.

I have a Pewter 03 sedan also had it 16 months absoluty no problems tires are wearing even at 15000 miles .Seems to run better than when we got it very comforatable and fun to drive. It looks as good as any car I've seen.Jerry

I have owned the car for 19 months and it is absolutely the best new car (in terms of quality and lack of problems) I ever bought. I had a wind noise issue (the right front door seal howl) for a while, but that seems to have simply gone away. There is a slight "buzz" in the dashboard (sounds like an electrical wire that is loose) that resonates at certain engine RPMs as I come off the throttle in very cold weather. I also needed one alignment because I drove the left front wheel over a curb I didn't see in a parking lot (not the car's fault). The car was only to the dealer for 5 minutes the day after I took delivery because someone had failed to connect a windshield washer hose in a spot that I could see, but not reach to fix myself. I haven't even done the two recalls (brake lines & gas filler check valve) since I positively hate going to the any dealer. I have done 8 oil changes in 36K miles (@4.5K/change). I currently have about 4500 miles since my last change, and after a 1500 mile trip this week-end running a constant 32-3500 RPM I am down less than 1/8" from the top mark on the oil stick with no oil added since the change. That extrapolates into a consumption rate of 1 quart of oil/36,000 miles (assuming not changing it)! I get a solid 25 - 28 mpg local driving, and cruising at 75 - 80 mph with the A/C on 100% (My wife drives me crazy with her "no outside air" bugaboo so I have to run the defroster all the time when she is with me.) I average 32 - 35 mpg (on 87 octane) depending on traffic flow. I have managed as high as 38 mpg when keeping my speed around 60 with no traffic and with no A/C (and no wife). I have often gone over 400 miles before fueling on trips. The brake pads were less than 40% worn when I checked them at about 25K. I can't find anything to complain about. When I set the CC, crank up the nice CD player, and get my seat adjustments just right, I feel like I could roll forever. Every so often I break out into a grin thinking about how little this sucker is costing me to own and operate!

One of the best cars I've ever owned. Consumer Reports recommends the Elantra now with better than average reliability ratings. That puts us in pretty good company. I'm at 11000 miles in 11 months. The clutch had a switch replaced and both visors were replaced for broken mirror hinges. The drivers seat seems slightly loose, kind of rocks a bit and I just noticed for the first time this week some moisture on the inside of the drivers side headlamp. I'll have the seat looked at with the next oil change. I'm real happy with the handling, mileage, and fit and finish, it's just a fun car to drive. My wife drives the car daily to work but it's pretty much mine on the weekends. I really enjoy detailing it now with all I've learned in the detailing forum. Weatherwise I can pretty much work on it on the weekends, detail it that is. I'm going to go slightly off topic now but I have to thank Mitch again for an awesome club and to all the members who contribute regularly with enthusiam for the club, car, and it's fellow members.

My elantra with close to 2 years and 26,000 miles is doing great. I change the oil every 3 to 5k miles and that's it. I ran down a battery giving jumps to my wife's car, and the dealer replaced it. Aside from that, I am very happy. I get about 25ish miles a gallon on a combination of city and highway driving with no effort to save gas. The exterior is unfortunately full of little dings from other people's doors in parking lots. The paint is not the greatest.

I have had mine since Sept of 03 with the only problem of:

door tape
inhibitor switch and evaporative canister system replaced
Shift flare which the ground wire mod solved.

With 15,000 miles on it now, it is a great car for the money.

2004 GT Hatch Automatic Tranny - Only problem I have noticed is the automatic transmissions occasionsally gets to this "I don't know what gear I should be in" state. Whe I am driving about 25-30 in the city and it suddenly downshifts and my RPM's go up real high for no particular reason. I was definitely not "goosing it" to encourage a downshift. I may bring this up the next maintenance.

Posted by: TGartnale Mar 20 2005, 05:13 AM

I was very disappointed in my car, and Hyundai, when at 61,000 km, my rite rear wheel bearing needed replacing. SPB mentioned in a previous post that this seems to be a problem with our cars. Well, if Hyundai put in a substandard part that does not give a service life that should be closer to 200,000 km's, they should cover the $300 it cost me to have it repaired. I have doubts about recommending the Elantra as being reliable.
I had a new Toyota Matrix for a weekend. Hmm. . . . . . .

On the other hand, my dealer (Kamloops Hyundai) was excellent in taking care of this mechanical problem. I brought my car in on a Friday morning (having put the summer tires on in order to determine the loud drumming noise wasn't a bad Blizzak). I just wanted them to take the car for a drive to let me know what the problem was. While the mechanic was lookin up TSB's on the computer for this failure (there were none), the dealership gave me a used Accent to use- to get to my job for the day. They had the part in stock (which is actually a little suspisious, as their parts room is as big as my bathroom) and did the repair while I was at work. I didn't even have an appointment.

But, this has me questioning long term relibility. I had planned on keeping this car until 2010, until I move to another country. Wheel bearings should not fail at 40,000 miles.
This event has really taken my enthusiasm for this car on a downward spiral.

I've had my 01 GLS 5-spd for 4 years, and there are 112,755 miles on the odo. I would say that probably 75% of those miles were on the interstate....

rants:

~ I had the throttle position sensor replaced under warranty (for the 3800RPM hesitation, didn't fix it, and I didn't discover the TSB about the ECU reflash until I was out of warranty)

~ I had the front drivers side wheel bearing go bad.... I can't remember the mileage, but I'm thinking it was around 20,000 miles.... replaced under warranty

~ Stock Michelins wore out at 30,000 miles... had to replace all 4 at once. I didn't like the way they rode or handled anyway, and at least they wore evenly, but I expected more out of a tire that supposedly costs $110 each.... I replaced them with Yokohamas that were cheaper (by almost half), handled better, and lasted longer.

~ I had the the corroded wiring harness issue.... caused my headlights to stay on and the power locks to stop working, only when it was raining.... dropped it off on monday morning, picked up rental on monday evening, picked my car up on friday... repaired under warranty, and dealer paid for the rental...

~ The brakes make noise after hard braking... a nasty grinding noise that sounds bad... like the pads are worn out and the rivets are gouging the rotors, but there is plenty pad left.... issue started after the warrannty expired, and it doesn't really bother me, the brakes still work fine... so it hasn't been resolved, and won't be until I replace the pads and rotors..... HOWEVER....

raves:

~ I am still running on the stock brakes!!!! (the main reason the noise doesn't bother me smile.gif )

~ Still using the original clutch!!!

~ The car still runs pretty much like new, burns very little to no oil.

~ The car is great fun to drive on the twistys....

conclusion:

Even though I've had some problems, the car has never let me down or left me stranded. To me, that's the most important thing. I am willing to overlook a few issues because I understand that nothing touched my human hands is perfect... as long as it doesn't let me down.....

I love the car, and I've recommended them to my friends and family. I'll definately consider another Hyundai when I'm ready to buy

Have an 03 GT since 9/03. Runs great I take reasonable care of it. Found that the headlights are a little hard to replace when they burn out. Thats what turned me on to this club. Found some good information in here too.

I just put 26,000 on it and still runs fine.

We bought an 02 GT in March of 02 and it now has 40,000 mile son it. Overall we have been happy with it despite some annoyances.

We have had constant problems with the window stickers bunching up at the seams, had them replaced 3 times on the front doors and they are bunching again. angry-hitselfonhead.gif

The transmission has been reprogramed twice for a confused/hard shift into 3rd, it still is confused sometimes.

We had the CD player replaced twice for static in the volume knob, now have an aftermarket cd player to get rid of that problem.

The stock Michelins sucked in the snow and rain especially, they hyroplaned alot. I had Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds put on and it performs excellent in the rain and snow now. It also needed an alignment because the rear end would get squirrely driving straight on icy surfaces.

The fog lamps seem to burn out frequently, I have replaced both sides twice. I also have replaced the passenger side headlight. They aren't cheap! huh.gif

I have an annoying rattle int he hatch that I haven't looked into yet. I noticed that someone else noticed a rattle in the dash in cold weather, anyone know of a fix? confused-scratchhead3.gif

I know that this seems like a lot of things wrong, but we have been really satisfied overall with this car. My wife drives it mostly and she really likes it.

It gets decent mileage. It averages about 23 in town and on the highway at ~75 it gets 32-33. I have gotten as high as 38 going 60 with the wind mostly at my back.

02 GLS 5 spd, 44000 miles now. clutch replaced at 23k, waterpump at 22k and the black tape around 28k. I switched to my 17s at 10k.

All in all it's been great. The struts thump, but what do you expect for a $12k car? Worst gas mileage I've gotten was 25 best was 35. Been to Florida several times and all ove the midwest. GREAT CAR!!

Posted by: dragonfighter60 Jun 2 2005, 01:15 PM

01 auto gls 72000 miles I've never had a problem that was hyundais fault other than both lowbeam headlights replaced twice and the brakelights once. The woman that owned it before me had an aftermarket sunroof installed and they messed some stuff up that I have since fixed.

Posted by: flcerberus Jun 2 2005, 05:24 PM

18 months and 27,000 miles only problem was a fuse on my horn about a month after I purchased it. Only complaint is the paint needs to be better it chips way too easily! Other than that I am very happy with it.

Hi.

I have a 2004 GT and my milleage is about 11K Miles.

problem so far:

Clutch slipping problem ( it is a design flaw (or should i say choice) made by hyundai between a stiff uncomfortable clutch or a slipping comfortable one...) it can be fixed by a DIY removal of component in the slave cylinder. I'm still working the guts to do it!!! blush.gif

Clutch ignition switch that allow you to star the engine. it was giving an intermittent connection and even though my foot was on the clutch all the way down, the car started only 1 time out of 5. Fixed it myself by cleaning and reinstalling the switch.

confused-scratchhead3.gif I have a weird nose that seem to be located on the right section under the hood and it sound a little like a turbo (???) it is generated by the engine and seems to be present at about 2.5K rev and higher though i heard it once or twice at idle rev.

I too have a little buckeling of the window tape but it is not too bad.

That's it! In fact i am ultra pleased with my car laugh.gif and since i can do most of the stuff myself, little problem do not bother me..

Well, i've had my 04 for over a year now and I don't have much to complain about.
The only problems i've had so far are:

1)Accumulation of like 50 different little white spots all over the paint despite washing and waxing it--and, for some reason, paint has been coming off my side molding mad.gif
2)Putrid smell coming out of the vents for the first minute or so after I turn on the AC
3)I had to change the front brake pads and resurface all the rotors only after seven thousand miles
4)My parking lights burned out and i've yet to get new ones biggrin.gif

I just hit 10,000 miles and i've been happy---we'll see what happens as the car ages

Posted by: mrsrony Aug 21 2005, 12:54 PM

New here, We've had our 2000 Elantra since it had 9 miles on it. We're now at just over 150k. I have to say baby girl has been through hell and back and she's just starting to get alittle tired. Shes done 3 Ohio to California treks. Hell it was almost a year before my hubby changed the oil. (Dont worry- I keep the schedule now) The passenger side headlight and inside overhead light just blew after 5 yrs and the passenger side window just decided not to roll up. We are getting ready to have our second set of breaks on.

I am beyond amazed at this little car and am finding it hard not to stick with it even though we desperately need a bigger car.

Posted by: RedRox Sep 25 2005, 11:45 AM

Just went past 2 years and 40,000 miles earlier in the month on my '03 GT Hatch. Still pretty much a trooper of a car! Niggly issues:

1. Driver's side sunshade creaks and makes ugly grinding noises. But apparently only for me as dealer cannot reproduce, therefore no warranty issue. I figure they will start hearing it next year, oh let's say right after I hit the 60,001 miles on the car.

2. Clutch interlock remains flaky. Most days good. Some days I wonder if I will ever get the car started or if it is the "big one" where I get to call Hyundai roadside assistance. See #1 above relative to Hyunday warranty work. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to replace it on my nickel in another year.

3. Window tape. See #1 and #2 about willingness of dealer network to effect warranty based repairs. If I am willing to leave the car for a couple weeks and rent something to replace it, they can do the ship it out to someone to get it fixed thing. It's all very involved they tell me. But I can schedule it any time, just let them know when I can be without a car for awhile. Uhhhh... I can't. Or I have to spend $$$ to rent to replace for the duration, but then it ain't exactly a free repair anymore. So I live with it. I still have about 11 months based on current driving patterns before I run out of warranty to decide what to do. Seems like a "live with it" issue at this point, which of course seems to be their strategy.

4. Downshifting into 2nd get some synchros not really synching. Thought there was a TSB on this or something similar. But hey guess what. Not reproducible. No warranty work, no problems! I'm sure they will be happy to fix it after 60K as well.

5. Static in volume knob on radio. Keep spraying that stuff from Radio Shack someone recommended. Works for a bit. Makes a mess to clean up though.

6. Get horrible smells when I turn A/C off. See others have this too. My wife's new Tribute even gets it a little bit, so guess just something newer cars "do".

7. Having a lot of problems with the rear driver's side seat belt. It just locks up and no amount of opening/closing the door, pulling softly, praying, swearing, etc. can seem to free it up. I'd take it in and have it looked at, but I figure I already know the answer since it is intermittant for me as well. Put it down as another thing to pay for to get fixed in another year at 60,001 miles.

Now I can see why they can afford to offer such a great warranty. If you never have to fix any problems, then it doesn't really cost you anything and it's a great marketing tool.

Other than that it's been a great little car. I'm still averaging just under 32 MPG, but most of my commute is highway driving. No real rattles or other noises to speak of. Need new tires, but I got over 42K miles on the stock Michelins, so no real complaints other than it would have been nice of them to wear more to get rid of them sooner! And only 3 more years and I'll even own it! Of course it'll have a 100K miles on it by then! Stay tuned...

Posted by: MrGisriel Sep 25 2005, 07:28 PM

Had mine for almost 1 year, and my grandfather bought it new in 01, no problems to speak of after 5 yrs and 130,000 miles..... any problems were fixed under warrenty...

Posted by: natesi Oct 10 2005, 10:07 PM

2002 GLS, 30K miles

Overall, I'm pretty happy.

My main complaints are:
1--Rattles. LOTS of them. Mirror buzzes, seatbelt anchor rattles, console/light area rattles... ARRRRRRRR!!! This drives me freaking batty!
2--Alignment issues. I have to get this thing aligned about twice a year. I don't know what the hell gives. I've taken it to different shops each time and paid anywhere from $40 to $130. It doesn't matter.

Other than that, mostly minor stuff. For the price I paid, I can't complain too much. HOWEVER, the only thing that would keep my from buying another Hyundai is the dealer network--freakin worthless.

The detail to repiars and maintenance is absolutly deplorable and embarrasing. I've taken it to two dealerships and they both down right SUCK. Stupid stuff, like leaving the coolent overflow tank bone dry (when the maintenance interval I paid them for says to make sure the levels are good). Not closing the air filter device properly so that the car is sucking unfiltered air (supid). Overfilling the engine with oil by about an extra quart. And simply not performing the work that they said they did, like reflashing the computer for the 3800 RPM lag. It's an utter waste of time and money every time I take my car in there.

And when they do actually fix something, it usually needs to be redone later, like the B-pillar tape thing.

All that, and they want to charge you about 1/3 more than anyone else. If they CAN'T even do bone-head stuff right, how can I trust them to do anything that requires actual skill?

Posted by: elantragt Oct 10 2005, 11:42 PM

I have to say natesi... you're right on. I've always said it was the rattles, thin paint and crap dealer network that are my main Hyundai/Elantra pet peeves. Nice update. Thanks.

I've had my car for all of about 4000 miles, and I've got mostly praise for the car, with just a bit of complaint:

The Good
The car drives nicely, is powerful enough, and with a bit of encouragement (with the auto), gets decent gas mileage. It seems to be fairly durable thus far.

The Bad
The worst thing so far to me is the paint. The paint chips very easily. I will probably have to get some touchup paint soon.

49k miles update: Nothing new to report. Replaced the right rear weatherstrip cause it kept coming down. That's it.

I've had mine for a year and 18K miles. The only isues that I have had was that the rear hatch washer nosel was spraying as much fluid inside the car as outside. I also have an anoying intermitent rattle from the passanger front seat belt buckle. Someday I'll have it looked at. Maybe during this next SRS reacall that's comming out soon.

I've done several mods to the car. If I have the cash I'll do the rear sway bar mod, and when I got the time I'll do the Manual slave cylander mod tongue.gif

I have an 03' GLS. 23K miles (not my primary car)

Driven it across country twice. Lot's of city driving as well.

No complaints whatsoever. I had a headlight lamp burn out.......dealer replaced it. That's it. No pings, bangs, bumps or rattles.

I change the oil every 3K (not 3.750)
I change the air filter overy 90 days (dirty or not)
I spend at least 30 minutes rinsing the car before I ever start washing it (to keep the clear coat from showing waves and scratches from grinding dirt/sand while cleaning)

23175 mile update:

An irritating squeak in the brakes when it is cold or the car hasn't been driven a while. Brake pads look fine and it is not that.

10,600 trouble free miles so far. The only time its been to the dealer was for its first oil change- free. Ive changed the oil the other two times myself.

For you? OK, but you have no idea of the conditions he lives in. On my gravel road I would probably be changing that soon too. I have to clean our K&N's at least 3 times a year because of the excess dust.

I hate it when people make assumptions and post them as fact.

Yup I think that was me - the car handles great now, as everyone knows laugh.gif

Going on a year of owning the car w/8700 mi.

The only thing that bothers me about the car is this grunt from the brakes when coming to a stop - (dealer said it was rust build up, and to just "punch" the brakes a few times and it will go away) confused-scratchhead3.gif

I also get this annoying rattle from the passengers side. I cant figure out where its coming from I think the seat belt area.

But besides that this car is wonderful

Posted by: PJB Dec 25 2005, 10:18 AM

I get a little noise from the brakes too but I thought it was salt buildup from the roads.

My &@*(%&$ Check Engine Light went on today, with less than 5000 miles on the car. I put gas in this morning, turned it many clicks (probably one and a half full turns of the gas cap) and a few hours later, here's the CEL. I had a chance to run it over to the dealer and the service writer asked if I had filled up; I said yes; she opened the cap and reclosed it, demonstrating to me how many clicks (I think she did about 6). I told her I turn it a lot more than that, and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders and said it should go off in about 5 trips in the car (engine on-off cycles), and if it didn't to bring it back.

Is that the common experience?

Posted by: Bobzilla Dec 29 2005, 04:51 PM

3 clicks. No more, no less. To keep clicking it for a full turn and a half, that's past excessive. I believe my cap says 3-4 clicks. Worked for 50k miles and almost 4 years.

Posted by: ricerrx7 Dec 29 2005, 04:58 PM

Did they read the code or just assume?

Posted by: Doohickie Dec 29 2005, 05:20 PM

She just assumed. I showed up at 3:00 in the afternoon and I'm sure if she could make me go away even for a day, she would do it. I fit the classic profile: just filled with gas. I guess I'll stick with three clicks from now on, although I suspect all the clicks after the first one are totally functionless. I think every once in a while on some cars it just doesn't seat right and the number of clicks has nothing to do with it. She said if it was anything really urgent, the CEL would be flashing (can anybody here confirm or deny that?)

If it's still lit tomorrow morning, I'll take her at her word and have them look at it.

[edit] So, the CEL went out after two cycles of the engine.

I sometimes get that too. I recently looked over at RDTiburon.com and found they have a http://www.rdtiburon.com/index.php?showtopic=12967&hl= to silence a rattle in the mirror, which looks like at least mechanically is similar to ours. I think I'm going to try the DIY and see if it works (although I will probably use foam instead of sound deadener since I have none of the latter). If it works, I will let you know and probably post my own version of the DIY. Stay tuned.

sounds can travel and be very hard to pinpoint their source. i thought for certain i had a vibration/rattle coming from the dash, and it turned out to be the rear view mirror. i unmounted it and tightened the C-clip than holds it to the window mount. that took care of it. but it took me months before i realized it was the mirror.

other common sources for vibrations are the door panels, dash vents, and faschia.

We once drove 180 miles looking for a dash rattle. 3 hours trying to find in the 'zuki. Wifey was driving and I'm looking all around and picked up our water bottle (1.5L doesn't fit in the cupholder) and it stopped. Put it back in it's place and it was back. Ended up the transfer case shift lever (puts it in 4wd) vibrates at speed. Not a problem until you wedge a 1.5L water bottle. We both felt stoopid.

I had a very annoying metallic sounding rattle that baffled me for a while. As southpaw said sound travels. I thought it was something loose under the seats. Turned out it was actually around the seat belt posts on the center console. I found some soft packing foam material and stuffed it in the channel around the seat belts posts and no more noise. Man, I hate rattles. angry-hitselfonhead.gif

We've had the the '02 GT since Dec '01 and the only problems was a (throttle or transmission -I forget) sensor last year that had to be replaced because the engine would rev high (or erratically) but the car wouldn't go faster than 30mph (the problem would go away for a few weeks if I disconnected the battery for 10 min) -happened twice then went to dealer and they fixed it under warranty a couple of hours later -it's been perfect ever since. The paint is fragile (chips and scratches easily). Aside from that the car has never given me any trouble.

Posted by: gtloverisback Jan 18 2006, 10:41 PM

My 03 GT has 8,00 km or 50,000 miles.

Th eengine went at 12,00 miles. They did a great job replacing it and explained that this ha shappened to a few engines worldwide.

Ive had the door taped replaced---Good job.

The paint is rather thin.

The dealer that I go to is 3 hours awy sbut worth it---World Crs in Salt Ste Marie Ontaio has been a Hyundai dealer for a long time--maybe 25 years.

They are good.

I think a lot of Hyundai dealers are just too new and are selling too many cars too fast.

The dealer networks just haven't caught up to the factory qaulity.

I now have 10500 miles on my car to date. I drive an '05 Elantra GLS with the Sunroof, Hatchback smile.gif

I've had the following issues so far with it:

1)That really bad foot-odor smell in the AC that comes on when you first turn it on ...what's up with that?
2)Brakes seem to need fixing again. First two months I had it, I had issues with the brakes making a high pitched sound when stopping in any condition. Turned out the brake pads were rough and were fixed. Now it seems I get like a creaking sound when I stop sometimes and that has me worried now.
3)Belts needed tightening a few months ago
4)The damn glass interior keeps fogging up with anything I clean it with. Trying Rainx Interior soon, hopefully that will work.

Aside from that, some jerkass dented my driver side front door slightly the first week I had the car. Went into the store to get some food, came out, and bam...GRR

Otherwise the car is totally great and I love it!!

My sister has the same exact car minus the sun roof, with probably 7k miles on it now. The biggest issue was this week when the driver side wiper stopped wiping, and it turned out that the nut needed tightening, which I did (yay I fixed the car!). Otherwise that car has been great too. She just needs to clean it more often!

Posted by: Goldenguy Jan 28 2006, 01:30 AM

Well, it's been about six months now, and the only issues I've had were the front right parking bulb ($1), the rear left reverse light bulb ($1), and the driver's side marker light ($1) burning out.

No issues otherwise. Great car.

Its still surprisingly "tight"

I pick up my 06 Sonata GLS premium on Saturday.

I hope its even better.

Posted by: oiml8 Jan 28 2006, 06:30 AM

WoW another Sonata convert. I like the car a lot too. Too bad you had to give up the Elantra to get it tho. I hope you don't leave us again. wink.gif

I have about 40k miles on mine. They have repaired the window tape once, replaced it once, and it needs to replaced again. The E-brake cable boot at the caliper on the passenger side has deteriorated and needs to be replaced (under warranty), and I need to replace the clutch by spring (it slips under hard exceleration now). Otherwise, I have no problems, no rattles or squeeks, and no complaints. The clutch going at 40k is completely due to my racing my car, and generally driving it like mad man. Under other circumstances you may not need to change it until 100k

Posted by: Doohickie Feb 16 2006, 01:39 PM

The one thing about my Elantra that has bothered me in the first few months is fuel economy. It's been a pretty steady 25.5 mpg mixed (with plenty of highway) since I got the car. They say it gets better after breaking but I'm coming up on 7k miles and still waiting.

This tank of gas I've made a conscious effort to be easy on the accelerator and coast up to lights and congestion, and to stick to 65 mph or less when I'm cruising. This tank seems to be lasting a little better, but not much.

I still have one or two elusive rattles and I'm going to try looking at the mirror and the seat belt bolts. The most pronounced rattle is intermittent but seems to be coming from in the dash behind (actually, in front of) the stereo. Maybe when I put my head unit in, one of the wires is bumping up against something.

I finally figured out how to get the right side vent out of the dash. I put some dielectric grease (supposed to be okay on plastic, right?) on the spots I thought might be rattling, but I don't think that helped anything.

If you want to get that vent out, remove the glove box completely (not just the glove box door) and remove the trim piece on the end of the dashboard facing the car door. Once the glove box is out you can reach in with your hand and push that piece out from the inside. From there, feel along the inside of the dash along the bottom of the bin under the vent and you find two "cleats" (for lack of a better word). I pushed the outboard one down just a little and got the lower right corner to pop out just a bit. Then I pushed the inboard one and it popped out the rest of the way. I've heard some people just pry it out from the front with a screwdriver but I was worried something will break. This method is a little less stressful on the parts.

Other than that, I love the car. Even with the mileage not quite meeting expectations, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Posted by: Vatch Feb 21 2006, 04:11 PM

The car runs like a top. Other than routine maintenance and the marginal factory michelin tires, the only thing that has gone was one of the e-brake cables snapped.

i am waiting for the "broken in mode" as well. my previous car was a 1998 ford contour and it had a manual transmission and it gave better gas mileage so i have felt the difference since day one.

2005 GT Hatch 5spd, 5K miles, purchased new May 2005. Just a few minor annoyances:

1) Intermittent dash rattle, usually while accelerating thru 2.5-3K rpm, but doesn't happen every time.

2) Fair amount of road noise - don't know how much is due to the hatch design and how much is due to the stock Michelins, which I've been told are noisy. But this is an Elantra - not a Lincoln (which I traded on it BTW).

3) Cruise control occasionally seems to overshoot/undershoot when attempting to maintain speed, especially going down a slight incline. For example, with CC set at 65 mph and driving down a long slight incline, you'll feel the speed increase and overshoot 65 slightly, only to back off the throttle and undershoot. You would get a similar feel if you had the CC off and "rocked" your foot on the accelerator, first giving a little too much gas, then backing off, then too much, etc. This is noticeable obviously, but liveable. If it gets worse, I'll have to have the dealer look at it.

4) Paint chips easily, as others have pointed out.

These are minor annoyances, at this point. None are serious enough to have forced me to take it back to the dealer yet.

The pluses of this car are too numerous too mention. I bought my first new car in 1968, so I've done this a few times. The Elantra is by far the most trouble free car I've owned considering first year of ownership. Time will tell, but I am optimistic considering what I've read from others on this forum. My only fear right now is that I just don't drive it very much - just a couple of times a week. I'm just coming up on 5K after 9 months of ownership, and 1200 of those miles were done in 1 weekend!

Posted by: JedimanGLS Mar 24 2006, 03:53 PM

Ok, so now, I am having some engine issues/transmission whatever issues.

I'm sucking down gas like Michael Jackson sucks down Jesus juice.

Anyhow, yeah, seems that im not shifting into gear ( i drive an auto) at the right speeds..ie, i can be going 20mph and the rpm's are sitting at 2-3k, sometimes 4k rpms. Same thing for 40 and above, it seems to sit in the wrong gears, and I can't feel the car shifting into gear either half the time, so something is going on wrong. I just filled the damn tank up the other day and no way should I be down a half tank about and I don't think I quite went 100 miles yet!!! PROBLEMS!

Posted by: cobas Mar 24 2006, 07:35 PM

'03 GT Hatchback, manual, 48,000mi - since new.

1) Loose radiator hose. Fixed under warranty a week after I got the car.
2) Sunroof creak, fixed under warranty a few months later.
3) Third-gear syncro went at six months, my fault or not - not sure. Fixed under warranty.
4) The ABS/TCS was malfunctioning in snowy conditions. It was never diagnosed and kind of went away.
5) Headlight burned out after two years, replaced under warranty.

The steering clunks, but the steering was damaged when i crashed the car at 40mph into a wall. I've had no other problems with the steering or the engine, transmissions, suspension, brakes, body or interior, stereo or any electrical component. The paint... eh, damned tree sap left spots on it.

Posted by: elantraelite Mar 24 2006, 08:12 PM

After 6months of ownership, 11,000km (6,300mi) my only issues have been:

- Annoying creaks in the two front passenger doors when accelerating or going around a sharp corner (im not driving it like a race car)

- My Dimmer switch has kicked the bucket.

Otherwise my Elantra has been great to me. Hell it's a car for god sake, If it starts everytime, is reliable and doesnt give me any major headaches then my Elantra has done very well by me.

'04 GT HB. 2 years old today smile.gif. 50,000 miles from new.

New tires @ 46500.
Rear brake pads @ 49500.

Most problems have been routine.
Bulbs blown a few times. Stopped using silverstar as it was starting to get expensive. Cheaper halogens seem to be lasting a bit better.

Alignment and steering wheel vibrations. Had the wheels balanced 7-8 times since new. Roadforce etc. Goes away for a while but then comes back. Alignment done 3 times in last year.

Mp3 player stopped reading discs @ 34000. Replaced under warranty. Close call wink.gif

Overall happy with car. Very comparable to european HB's I've driven for the last 10 years.

Dealer (Fairfax Hyundai, VA) is ok. Mechanically I've had no problems with them. Quality of work seems good. Customer service though is hot and cold. Last couple of times they've been on the ball so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

All in all a good experience and will consider Hyundai (sonata!!) when I replace this next year.

All hard there issues but Mecury was worst the buick an caddy were a trade off Caddy was lastin inside but oil was leaking at 98k miles buick was great in engine dept but sucked with interior features (no ac, power windows locked up) an down here in florida ac or air is a necessity
So i have no experience with new cars or even small economy cars.
Additional note: All above were 4 speed automatics mellow.gif

So last sept i went looking for cars originally looking at used. Mainly 4-5 yold Buicks since the engines were good and parents would only cosign a "safe" car. But credit ratings werent exactly good. Mine was actually better than my parents but i didnt make enough.

Finally i went to Hyundai dealer to see if somehow i could purchase a new car. (rumors had that new is easier than used to finance) Well it was true. I didnt even need a cosigner, and I kinda got the car i had wanted for almost 3 years. Was hoping to get a GT 5door, but i am very happy with my GLS 5door. I am now at 9000 miles. I ocassionally notice a rattle from the front left dash area but it is really random and an unsual hum when on wet roads (again random) from the rear wheels (suspect this is due to it being a hatch and noise dampening isnt as much back there). Have had only to take back to dealer for driver wiper replacement since the first had hardened and wasnt wiping properly. No questions asked free replacement (only had 300 miles or so on car).
Car is currently in Auto body shop being fixed from my accident 5500 miles ago sad.gif
But it will be back as good as new (or almost) by friday.

'06 GLS 5spd. The car only has about 1800 miles on it.

The paint is thin as mentioned. I have several rock chips already.
The CD player has a tendency to reset to the first track when the car is turned off, a minor problem.

Other than that I have had no problems with the car as of yet, no rattles to speak of and the car is getting great gas mileage.

Posted by: elmy311 May 3 2006, 10:51 AM

Well i will have had my car for two years next week. It has 16,000 miles currently. The biggest dissapoinment is by far the body on this car. It is by far the worst i've ever seen...and i detail cars as my job (so i know). Not only is the sheetmetal paper thin but the paint on it is rock hard making it painstakingly impossible to buff out swirls, scratches, and oxidation....especially with the Rally Red CC! I have never seen a car scratch or dent so easily in the six years of detailing! Also, my gas mileage sucks big time....the average i'm getting is no more than 23 MPG with a mix of city/highway, more so highway though. However, with those negatives, come positives...the car is very sporty looking and you can't beat the price on one. My dealer experience was absolutly ridiculous and the service department is a complete joke....but that may be the dealership itself. But in all I've enjoyed my experience with my Elantra....to bad i'm selling it though...payments aren't cutting it for me anymore.

I'll definately consider another Hyundai when I'm ready to buy
http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=9437

Most new cars make that grinding noise after a while ours did still does it 12 years later and my friends parents brand new toyota camry and 2 year old one does it aswell. Nothing wrong with them just a common noise.

welp, i think that the clutch is about to go... i can cruise in 5th and suddenly punch it and the tach will slip up to redline... so yeah, since this is my first manual tranny, so i dont know when to tell something involving the tranny or clutch is about to go or not.

Miles?

the elantra is still doin' good .. 77k miles..

i'm surprised at how quiet things are ... took a ride the other night at 3 AM...

no creaks or squeals from the cabin...

Well my GT has over 106k KM on it, and even after boosting it the engine runs like mice on a pile of dead corpses!

Magnificant!

Posted by: smp85 May 19 2006, 10:45 PM

heard someone mention the horrendous paint...i have a 2002 rally red GT...and i can definitely attest. i purchased mine for 7200 OTD in march of last year and it had 50000 miles on it. thought i got a pretty good deal, any thoughts? but back to business. i get the good gas mileage (about 35-36 on the highway, 25-26 around town), but that is where my compliments end. the brakes are terribly undersized, the engine is, in a word...meh, the manual transmission is extremely notchy (only time i can get a smooth shift out of it is in very hard acceleration, like around 4-5 grand). the only thing i can say is that the "sport tuned suspension" is a bit better than in the GLS, as i drive both since my dad has an 03 gls. my GT now has 73,000 miles on it, and i am already considering selling it. it just does not do much for me, and the damn starting issue that i made a post about earlier is kinda annoying too. damn ecu issues...

Bought my Elantra new in January 2001. It has only travelled 21,845km's B)

Low points - mad.gif Only two - had a fullout with the local dealer, when they serviced my car scratched the front spoiler while putting it on a hoist and said that they didn't do it!!!!!! And the clock stuffed up

High points - biggrin.gif It's only travelled 21,845km's It's a great car to drive, and it's one of a kind.

Hood needs to be replaced (due to hail), other cars faired a lot better in the same lot. Thin sheet metal? Rearview needs to be replaced, as it rattles. I wish it had just a little more HP, say around 150. But it isn't bad the way it is (I have a 5 spd) and it keeps me from wasting gas. But being able to keep people from jackrabbitting out in front of me to cut me off would be nice.

The brakes are fine if you don't drive harshly.

My wife has a 2003 Elantra (auto) we bought brand new. it has almost 50,000 miles on it now, and we're VERY satisfied so far. It's comfy, even on long trips, has a bunch of nice standard stuff which are options on most other cars in this category, and handles nicely for an econ car (we're planning to replace the oem Michelin MXV4+ tires soon with some Kumho's probably, which I think will improve handling even more). It's pretty fast, too, compared with others in the same class. Very well put together, too. and I LOVE the headlights-performance: best I've ever seen.

Only things which needed attention so far were:
rear brake noise,
sunvisor bracket,
digital clock's display problem
(all replaced or repaired under warranty without any questions by the dealer, who's been very nice so far)

We get btw 35-37 on hwy, in-town mileage was never really calculated, but we know it's not bad at all.

2 sets of headlight lamps
Replaced front wheel bearing at 145k miles
Replaced fuel line pressure damper (warranty) at 32k miles
Replaced fuel pump (warranty recall)
2 timing belts / all belts
Replaced clutch pedal position sensor switch 87k miles
Replaced front rotors (not really necessary) 135k miles

Best money spent on the car:
$16 for my first set of Bosch 2 spark plugs (what a difference they make for acceleration) clapsmiley.gif

Hey I got my elantra 1month and 1week ago..... So far I love it. I got it with 150mi on it and now have 5,600. This car is never uncomfortable even on 10 hour drives. I have never had that. I always after a few hours am not..... (jeep liberty(02), kia rio(02), oddessy(96), Tiburon gtv6(04 damn I miss this car.. I put 15,000 in 5 months on her), suzuki grand vitara(99), (04) santa fe.

Here is the funny thing:
I have had 3 accidents in 3 years. I am 19 and started at 15 and I drive like a crazy man all the time. I am always going on sharp corner roads all the time for fun. I took classes racing for 3 summers now and damn I love it.

Back to the amazing amout of accidents. I still think I am a great driver because think about it. I have driven 205,000 miles already; and I also am always speeding etc. I say thats damn impressive if you ask me. ONLY 3 and the 3rd they hit me. So with how I drive it is like 600,000 miles and only 3.

Posted by: gewb Aug 1 2006, 07:36 PM

2003 Elantra 5 speed (base model) - see previous post...

...just logged my best mileage:
54.1 mpg over 185 miles! thumbsup.gif

This after adding Militec to the engine oil and after changing to Red Line MT-90 transmission fluid and Militec.

no matter how you slice that pie, it is alot of accidents...unless you are magnet for people hitting you, pulling out in front of you, cutting you off etc...that is a lot of accidents. I hope you just on a bad streak b\c by the time you are 30 your insurance will be more per year then your car....if you can even find coverage!

My God Man!! I haven't had my 03 hatch long, but driving to VA about a week after buying it i only avg 32 MPG...54 from a gas engine, in what 3k lbs car? I might mess the leather with those #'s!!

Posted by: gewb Aug 2 2006, 09:12 AM

I get bummed when I don't get at least 33...car life average is 34.86 mpg.

Last month I filled up 18 times and 5 times exceeded 40 mpg. But this drops like a rock in the winter.

Wish I knew why some days I get that great mileage while the next day it drops even though I drive the same way, same weather, same traffic, some-old/same-old.

Posted by: painless Aug 2 2006, 09:18 AM

now that I thought about it a little...we had the A\C on drove into a storm and had a traffic jam due to accident...so my mpg's were probably skewed low...

18 times you filled up....no wonder you have a Hyundai....with a gas bill like that I couldn't afford rent! I hope that is a huge write off at the end of the year...$600/month using quick math?? allow me to repeat.. My God Man.

my uneducated opinion is that your MPGs will change based on temperature, humidity, weather, tire pressure, even weight of the car (as you use gas or fill up that might be a significant change. water is 8lb per gallon, what is gas? 13 galls would be a 100lb load difference?) also, type of gas, and gas station..which refinery it came from....

Posted by: Cite 3 Aug 2 2006, 09:23 AM

i got militec ONCE in my oil and power steering..

wasn't my money so i said what the heck..

can't tell any difference...

... i get pretty good highway @ 34+..

but around town is crappy crappy crappy ..

something like 20-22.

but i have the auto... so...

car is holding up just how i expected it too.. my last hyundai lasted well over 100k miles...

and i'm approaching that now.. its an '02.

Was the seat buckle more of a squeak them a rattle? If so I am very happy I found another one with this issue. Cause it drives me freaken crazy. I did not spray anything into it because I was worried about the sensor in it. However keeping my seat in the high postion and the belt forward has made me hear it less(that seating position sucks; but you do what you half to do. I like sitting down in the car not on top)

I go through about 100 to 120 gallons per month. I fill at the same station. My "typical" fill is around 6 gallons as I don't like the tank getting too low...hard on the fuel pump in the summer. Also, I go across a 40 miles stretch with NO services, almost no buildings, poor cell phone coverage and sometimes nasty weather.

I travel alone.

I check and adjust my tire pressure twice per week.

Last month the weather was record heat - 19 days over 90F with almost a week in triple digits (but it's a dry heat).

Purchased in February of '02, and we now have 55k on the odo. Let's see, what's problems have we had......

-rear brake line replaced (warranty recall)
-exhaust manifold cracked (warranty recall)
-multiple headlights burned out (warranty replacement)
-front end rebuilt after accident (bumper, bumper cover, headlights, front fenders, grill, hood, radiator)
-replaced the tires just after 50k

I think that's about it. The brakes are sometimes a little mushy, and there's a pretty good amount of rust built up on the edges of the front rotors, so I plan to replace the pads/rotors soon.

I just finished reading the 2001 Elantra GLS 12month test conducted by Edmunds.

I must say it truely is an EXCELLENT article for anyone looking at the Elantra. In my first 12months in ownership Id have to say they hit the nail right on the head.

Hyundai has done an awesome job designing the XD Elantra and have only slipped a little in the buzzing and rattle department.

Plus I doubt those Edmund reviewers would have treated the Elantra well over the 12months it was in their fleet.

The day I had my Elantra 1 year the sunroof wouldn't close and the elecrtic locks stopped working. It's most likely a blown fuse, but after 1 year I'm a bit perturbed about it. I will be taking it to the dealer on Fri. for the 1 year check-up and inspection and have this little elctronic problem fixed.

2003 Gt automatic owned three years, and 26000 miles no issues yet ,other than dealer using Castol Transmission fluid. It has been 10000 miles since change and works great. The tires are about gone one is wore on the edge and has a vibration..We still love the car.Jerry

Posted by: painless Sep 19 2006, 11:10 PM

does it count if I've only owned mine 3 months but it is about 37 months old?

I see no signs of the initial quality vs overall quality being gapped. I still love the car and it is due for an oil change soon. I hate being tied to the dealer, but for the warranty I will pay their rip-off oil change prices...$30! Insane!

I am still finding features too and that part I love. I was at the beach shortly after owning it and was getting in and out of the car alot at night...it took me almost the entire week to figure out that I wasn't leaving my lights on, they were controlled by the key! Such lazy-a$$ Americans...I love it! (unlike my old civic which didn't even have a chime...come on in 1991 Honda could afford a $2 relay and a $5 buzzer?)

Well, now that you mention it there is one little thing that I'm not too happy about.

The steering wheel is crumbling in my hand. Slowly but surely, piece by piece, the 11:00 - 12"00 position where I rest my hand while driving is crumbling and falling apart. It looks awful and feels "icky".

It's a little over two years old and I'll be taking it in around he end of this year. when I have some time off.

I do expect this will be covered under warranty, yes?

Other than that, no problem, aside from that "passenger airbag" light that others seems to be plagued with, but I can live with that.

I haven't hit this thread in a while myself.

But I've had the car a little while over a year now. Started at 21360mi, and am now at 36110mi. Only issue to this day is the paint, really. I've had to touch up quite a few areas, as the paint takes damage very easily. But better to be touched up than to let it go so it can rust!

Absolutely zero mechanical troubles. I thought I had something with the transmission, but it turns out going into overdrive is delayed as to give the transmission time to heat up.

Posted by: cobas Oct 11 2006, 09:59 AM

'03: I had some issues with a loose radiator hose and creaking sunroof the first week I had the car, but those were fixed promptly. The third gear synchronizer was replaced six months later, and the shift knob started peeling, both under warranty. Nothing else major for the next year until I crahsed it into a wall. I had basically to replace all the suspension and half the steering, so I can't talk about the reliability of those now.

Two years later, at 56,000 miles, no significant issues. The last two were the sun visor mirror cover breaking off, and the rear wiper bolt-cover falling off. The first was covered (new visor), the second my dealer said it was under "adjustments," (12k / 1yr)... hm.... whatever, it's just slightly uglier. Oh and one headlight burned out... replaced under warranty too!

Exterior.. a couple of door dings, some expected paint chips in the front, and the paint on my hood was ruined by tree sap. Damned trees.

Posted by: ExemptedNut Oct 11 2006, 07:53 PM

only problem so far is my power steering, the belt wont stop slipping and squeeling...I've already replaced the belt a month ago and now the problem is back

New tranny at 30,000 miles( warranty) pas side window is always getting repaired for the motor (warranty),driverside power mirror not working (warranty) comming up on 60,000 service $575) cant wait to pay for that! Other than that no problems

biggrin.gif I like my 05 Elantra GT more and more. I bought it 6 months ago in Seattle with 10,000 miles. It now has about 20,000 and in November I moved back to Louisville from Seattle and drove the car across the country. It was a tedious drive, but the car did great... i've had no problems whatsoever and the tires look like they will still last for quite some time.

Posted by: scott9050 Nov 26 2006, 08:59 PM

I am still having the surging problem. I now also have a good 3 inches of weatherstriping that has ripped on the drivers door. I am getting a lot of nicks in the paint from rocks on the roadway and am considering a bra for the front to stop the damage.

Posted by: cobas Nov 26 2006, 11:51 PM

Low-beam headlight burned out at 57,800mi (3.5yrs) shortly after the right one six months ago. Both were replaced under warranty, and I'm shocked. Lightbulbs under warranty. Whoddathunkit? Also, there are 21 other exterior lights that are not under warranty and not one has burned out. Given my last car... that's amazing.

2002 Eleantra GT, silver, leather option. Manual.

Had it for just over one year.
Car was never rust proofed, and that is bad for montreal.

The bad:

- Rust: Starting around antenna, at the bottom of the right trunk light, under the trunk handle, along seams of top inner door welds, bottom of rear wheelarcs (kinda normal), one spot on roof (probably from rock), some parts of the door hinges, both trunk hinges (major, I guess stress on metal weakens paint?), inside of trunk lid between trunk lights.

-Major rust in engine bay. I beleive the lower engine block is completely rusted. I am checking today.

- Problem with wiring? of rear brake lights. Sometimes third light stays on, passenger rear light goes off, and causes cruise control to stop working (I guess it thinks brake is pressed)

-3800rpm lag. Going for ECM fix
-RPM doesn't drop during shifting (sometimes rises!). ECM fix?

-Power steering line rusted and leaking.

-Drivers window started to slow down sometimes.

-Water leak in trunk.

-Brakes squeek. I have to check why. Dealer said they changed all when I bought it.

All four window tapes are tearing.

For me the worst of everything is the rust, since it is the most difficult to deal with. The rest can be fixed.
My wife bought a 2001 sentra se and it was was never rust proofed either, but is spotless. The major thing I see is Hyundai doesn't use the welding paste on seams as much as honda, Nissan, which causes rust at these places since moister gets into these seams.

Zero problems thus far (better be!)

2002 GT hatchback, just about to hit 80,000 miles. Other than the minor stuff (window trim tape, clock, etc.) I haven't had too many problems with the car. I have to replace both axle seals soon (starting to leave drips in the driveway), and my passenger front door lock stopped working with power (still worked manually, and would control the other locks, just wouldn't lock/unlock when commanded to). There was high resistance in one of the signal wires, so instead of tracing the whole harness trying to find the problem, I just ran a new wire from the joint connector, under the dash, to the passenger door connector. Problem solved...

Posted by: NY2002ElantraGT Jan 7 2007, 07:07 PM

Just hit 93k miles on my '02 GT, only problems would be window tape, and paint. the hood and front bumper have alot of chips. The windshield wiper arms had to be repainted. oh and the battery went on me, but it was 4 1/2 years old. other than that, cant complain.

Kenwood CD Player not working properly. Turning the volume up turns it down (sometimes)... would not repair after 36K mi.

Paint started peeling 6 months after I bought it, they said no problem, bring it back anytime. Would not repaint it after 36K mi, even though it started peeling at 20K mi.

Slide /tilt sunroof leaks and stains the liner, would not fix after 36K mi even though it has leaked ever since I purchased it. The service tech told me it was supposed to leak. ;-) It only leaked on highway speeds in the rain, which happened very seldom.

They misrepresent their warranty and they are not interested in repeat business.

You may be able to fix this yourself. I used to work for a company that made sunroofs, and popular wisdom as that 99% of leaks had to do with the drain tubes that run down the A-pillar being plugged. Assuming the Elantra has a similar setup, you might try cleaning out the tubes with a longish pipe cleaner.

Posted by: silet Feb 27 2007, 11:56 AM

The Elantra has 4 drains for the sunroof. The other two go down to the rear wheelwell. They are not easy to get to from the roof...

there is also the a-pillar drain, i have seen it myself!

The only issue I've ever had was a broken A/C sensor that was fixed under warranty. Brakes went at around 50k or so which I think is absolutely normal and I replaced them myself.

I'm so glad I bought this car and love that it's been able to drive me across the country twice fully loaded, driven on a daily 80 mile commute with no issues and has just been generally rock solid.

Dealer is replacing the pedal assembly and the throttle cable on my '06. The throttle has been sticking since 2,000 miles (now 22,000). They are also replacing the driver door body weather stripping and the piece that holds the floor mat in. I will probably like the car much better now that a dealer finally listened to me about the 3,000 rpm throttle surge.

Brake pads went out at about 40k, had to have the Pioneer deck replaced, I have a vibration/rattle in the dash no one can find, some clutch safety spring went out about a month ago, quick fix tho. We love our car and will probably be getting the wife a Tiburon here shortly. Hyundai has come along way since the days of the Accent IMO.

From another forum (http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?showtopic=16028&view=findpost&p=81776):

QUOTE (gewb @ Apr 9 2007, 07:52 AM)
Well, I just sold my '03 on Friday - got an '07 Sonata. But my wife still has her '04 Elantra (midnight blue color). My '03 was the best car I have owned (bought my first car in 1966) which is why I stayed with Hyundai.

Four years ago I started a contract job that was to last two years but it involves driving 186 miles per day (over three hours per day in the car). Add weekend stuff and you can see why I drive 1,000 miles per week, over 90% at freeway speeds. I bought my Elantra on Memorial Day 2003, a chianti red base model Elantra (2.0L, 5 speed manual, A/C, power windows & locks, radio). The two year gig has now lasted four years with more than a year to go before it is done - you see where this is going?

After three years and ten months (188,543 miles) and facing another 60k miles, I decided to get a new car. The Elantra had served me well: 35mpg average lifetime fuel economy, two timing belts, two wheel bearings, one battery, two fuel pressure dampers, one clutch position switch, two sets of Bosch 2 plugs - less than $800 total cost over 188k miles. Add to that four sets of tires ($1,200) and with the cost of the maintenance, less gas/oil/filters, general ownership came out to a penny per mile! (I'm not counting the three new windshields 'cause it wasn't the Elantra's fault!)

As for oil/filters, I changed the oil and filter every 4200 miles or so - typical cost was $8.00 per oil change (I do it myself), plus Red Line MT-90 tranny oil and air filters for a total cost of around $440. I used 5,392 gallons of fuel. Lest you say "You didn't list brakes and clutch!" - I have never replaced the brakes or clutch, and the original brake shoes still have over 30% remaining. My Hyundai mechanic thinks the clutch has more than half remaining.

The new buyer had the Elantra inspected before purchase. His mechanic said "Amazing - in da** good shape, especially for the miles!"

I hope my new Sonata does as well.

Regards,
GEWB

I'd have to say his Elantra held up pretty well!

I bought my 02 GT in Aug/06. It had 100,000 kms. on it. It is maroon in color. It has leather, TCS, ABS & a sunroof. Of course it is a manual transmission. I hate automatics. I have put over 18,000 kms on it since I bought it. I am getting 44 mpg on the highway (Imperial gallons). It handles and rides great. thumbsup.gif I don't have any howling sounds in my GT. The only problem I have had is after I hit a deer. If I lock the car with the key fob; the alarm goes off. Besides that I am completely happy with my GT. I would not trade it straight up for a new Civic. I live in Sask., Canada.

my 03 Gls is running like a top........nothing has broken on her since day one....just some minor electrical issues with a door actuator which was replaced.

I'm about to go in for my 60K........but I'm going to do it at 57K.

will be replacing the timing belt..........adding all new OEM belts..........adding a new OEM water pump.......and gettign dealer applied Throttle Body/ fuel/induction service with BG products.

about the peeling wrapper tape on the windows, i have an '01 gt in black and it seems that the windows were painted the same color b4 they wrapped that dull black plastic onto them. so i have decided to remove it all and have a more uniform look but i got some glue marks and i'm still only halfway done so it looks really weird

Check the hood switch, just forward of the front right strut. Make sure when the hood is closed, the switch is pressed all the way down. Try unplugging the switch; if that fixes it, you need to do something to make sure the switch is being pressed.

OH, and that moldy smell that the car emits after using the A/C.
http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=741

it's an old Honda trick. Shut off your A/C (not the fan) about 2-3 minutes before getting to your destination, this way water can't accumulate inside the vents (and rot) & run a bottle of Lysol with just the fan on (fresh air intake) with engine off. oh & avoid using recirculation air especially if you’re living in humid climate.

I'm approaching 100,000 miles and the only non-routine maintenace I've ever had to do was have both rear wheel bearings replaced (one at 75K, one last month). I still get 33-35mpg at 75 mph and the body/interior still looks like new. With the 17" wheels and 2" lowered springs, I still get asked "What in the heck kind of car is that?" on a regular basis. I'm happy as can be.

Posted by: blmqzjc Jun 1 2007, 07:05 AM

Just completed 2 years of ownership on Memorial Day, and 16K trouble free miles. Took the car to dealer for a free 34 point inspection (which is about 90% of the scheduled maintenance) - do the rest of maintenance myself. Even though technically car is due for air filter and coolant replacement at 2 years, dealer said not to be in a hurry for that due to low miles, but I'll probably replace them anyway. Just did the 5th oil and filter change.

My total cost of maintenance in the first 2 years is under $100, mostly DIY oil changes and a couple of wiper blades. A DIY oil change is less than $8 (Exxon Superflo 10w30 and Purolator 14459 filter), and is so incredibly easy on this car.

Paint is a weak spot, and I too am starting to get the musty/moldy AC smell this season (never got it the first 2 years). Goes away after running the AC for a few minutes, but stinks to high heaven initially.

I'm a pretty happy camper.

I just turned 200,000 miles on my 2002 GLS this past sunday (8/12/07). I keep up on preventive maintenance (oil, trans fluid, timing belts, fuel filter, plugs) which I do myself. The only corrective maintenance this car has required has been a thermostat at about 140,000 miles. I did change the oil pump at 125,000 due to a mistake I made when changing the timing belt (long story).

This car is starting a little shaky recently like it is starving for fuel. Once I get revs up, she runs like a top!

I am Hyundai for life. My next car will be a Hyundai (if this one ever dies).

What's up everyone,

It's been about 2 1/2 years since I posted, and it was to this same topic, I believe I was the first to reply to it. Well all this time later my '04 Elantra GT is holding up great, She's got about 65,000 miles on her and purrs like the day I got her. I'm on my third set of tires, still got the factory wheels, maybe that's in the plans later on. Other than a few "more" paint chips and some light Texas hail damage sad.gif ( at least it wasn't a tornado) I'd say she's holding her own pretty sweet. I just recently tinted the windows and got a K&N filter for her, I know, I know what took so long? Other than routine maintenance
I haven't had to put her down at all. biggrin.gif

Posted by: saturn Aug 31 2007, 06:44 PM

so far mines a tank. getting the usual issues (slipping clutch, etc) from me driving it hard, but besides that it's only ever needed a thermostat and other usual maintenance (tires, lights, wipers, oil, etc).

one time the clutch interlock switch acted up but I think it just had dirt in it because after stomping on it to get the car to start it stopped acting up.

I've done a few mods and it doesn't seem to care at all. a few rattles but I think it's going to last me a while.

Well, just rolled over 10k this past Wed.

I've had it since July 11, 2006, so Hunter has been with me for 15 months now (it was born in May 06 so it 18months old tongue.gif)
Had lil to no issues so far.

when i first saw that i thought it was 100k. i was gonna say 100k in a year, where the hell do you drive? haha

you hit 10k, and i hit 110k this week!

Posted by: red Oct 26 2007, 12:07 PM

Update on my car. Hit 70k miles this month and still running like a dream. My biggest complaint is the paint. Had one fading spot 8 months ago and despite my best efforts, my paint is disappearing faster than ever.

My biggest worry now is that it looks Hoopdie. Engine's fine, interior's fine, everything else is good. Any recommendations on where to get her repainted?

Posted by: SilentasKnight Oct 26 2007, 02:52 PM

Try and get it painted someplace local thats been there for a really long time. I get my body work done when i hit deer and other such animals at this place right down the street. They are really good and have been in the same location for 30 some years. If they've been in business that long they have to be doing something right.

loooong story, met my wife to be in the Philippines dec 06, backtraded at local subaru/hyundai dealer, got elantra, some cash n air fare back to Manilla, anyway Tina (the bride) can not drive a turbo car on her first Victorian drivers license, love her with all my heart n soul ........ but a new driver, and a Filipino in a REX ...... good grief, my day job is a driver licence tester with DMV, so I know how "good" immigrants drive on test.
Forgot to say have had this car 14 months, have done about 8000 kms ,cheers

I got my engine oil report back a little while ago from http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ and with over 125.000 miles on the engine the report stated it had VIRTUALLY NO WEAR happy0005.gif It kinda surprised me because I still have a slightly rough idle when it warms up. Even though they only had 25 oil samples of the 2.0L Hyundai engines generally these wear very well. Only some Toyota's showed lower #'s.
I may do 1 more sample later on. Blackstone Labs only charges around $22 for a report.

3 Hyundais (99 Elantra GLS, 01 Santa Fe GL, and 2004 Tiburon) and all three have clear coat delaminating, fogging, or pealing on the plastic parts (door handles, outside mirrors, gas covers...). I have had all three repainted but the warranty on paint is only 3 years and the problems just persist year after year. All these cars are garaged and are in CA where the weather is always perfect tongue.gif Mechancially all have been reasonably sound with the Tiburon being flawless in nearly 4 years of service. The Elantra is looking pretty sad with almost no clear coat left on the rear wing but with over 100k miles it still gets over 30 mpg doing 75 on the freeway.

I've never seen any Hyundai's since maybe 1995 models and older that have any "clear coat delaminating, fogging, or pealing on the plastic parts." Very strange...and another reason to do the occasional waxing.

Ive had my '07 Elantra since Dec 30th last year, it has 4k miles on it.... Great car, the interior scratches a bit easy, and the idle has a high pitched sound to it, I think I need to switch out the stock belts.... But Im very happy with my buy, my first of many Hyundais to come.

Posted by: Whiting08759 May 12 2008, 10:19 AM

Still lovin' it ! biggrin.gif Dealer serviced. 2005 Elantra GLS will be 3 years old in 2 months.

As of this morning have 48,821 miles...starting to "info-up" on what I should have done for the 60K maintenance schedule (water pump? etc.)

Only trouble to date was that the rubberized steering wheel covering started to crumble apart. It was replaced under warranty; no probs. I have started to notice, however, that the side mirrors are not responding to adjustment attempts. Since I'm the only one that ever drives the vehicle (and hence the mirrors do not need to be adjusted very ofter) I only recently noticed this. I will have it addressed at my 52,500 oil change (hopefully under "bumper-to-bumper" warranty coverage).

P.S. Love this club and the GREAT info and pics members so freely share ! Thanks to all. clap3.gif

I bought my '98 Elantra in April of 2006 with just about 120,000 on it. Since I bought it the right side mirror cover broke in January of '07 and a couple rust spots formed on both sides where the bumper meets the metal by the wheels. It drives excellent! I love how the car handles.

Posted by: Trance88 Jun 8 2008, 11:44 PM

Well, the transmission on my 1998 Elantra Wagon just kicked the bucket on friday the 6th of June. It's not worth fixing so I can't drive it any longer. I'm getting a diffrent car that will not be another elantra. I probably will no longer have a reason to post on this forum board. I just signed up too!!!

OK - my 10K report on the 2006 Auto GT Hatch.

- Mileage. I live in NYC and for first 3K I only drove it in the city... real city driving, no highway to speak of. was unhappy with MPG - was gettign 14-19 MPG, was using high octane has. Since then I started workign out of state and driving everyday 80 highway miles.... big improvement. I average 26-27 MPG now and have had stretches smart highway driving with MPG of 30... so no more concerns on that front. car just bad in city, great on highway.

- small crap: had small problems with the auto adjusters on side mirrors ... could have been water getting in after car wash... not sure - intermittent probelms w these but I adjust manually... Hear a louder then desired whirring noise from AC, can hear liquids sloshing around on certain turns/bumps, road noise is annoyingly loud with windows closed, rear wiper has squeal/grind noise when operated, radio not super good... sometimes use of breaks gives me radio static.... can hear little parts rattling around in front passenger door when goign over bumps, front windshield wipers suck, especially in light rain - massive streaking that makes it hard to drive at night in drizzle ... for some reason my wheels, especially in front, tend to get a little deflated, but do not go flat... just stay a little underinflated to the naked eye. i get them pumped up to 32/33 pressure, and then after a few weeks they look like their usual slightly underinflated selves...
...obviously none of these are biggies, just little crap that i can live with and am not focused on fixing just now

- soft breaks: was and continues to be a pet peeve... initially i thought it was a defect, but after having a few people check it out, seems like no obvious mechanical problems - its just that there is a lot of travel in the break pedal and that for some reason it sinks down under sustained pressure, such as at a red light... but performance is fine. I had the breaks bled and tht led to small improvement, especialyl first week or so ... thereafter the softness started coming back, but I am accepting this as a quirk at this point, not a malfunction

- if i had time and money to burn, I'd want to look into better shocks for less road sensitivity; better sound insulation if possible; I'd get after market wipers and rainX or something like that... I'd get brighter fog lights to help when its raining at night and road gets hard to see - the stock headlights are not too bright - and also some custom F U lights in the back for all those tailgaiters and high beamers out there... I'd also research how to decrease body roll in turns ( I know about the Tib rear sway bar mod, but am not sure how that impacts warranty and what other effects that has on car performance/stability... thus would need to do more research)

Not sure if you can tell by my reply, but I am still glad to own the car... I am not one to just ra ra cheer the car because I bought it or because its a fan website - just straight opinion - I still like it and its still good car for the money.
I am surprised at how sufficient the horsepower is - that has not been an issue. it looks good and has aged fine - all I have done, in fact, is oil changes in terms of maintenance. also - i am a very picky owner - i listen to every noise and rattle ... so the fact that i am reporting a general thumbs up is damn good in truth.

will drop another post at 20K ... i like to drop in and check out this website once in a while. thanks all ...

187,000 Km, 6.5 yrs old.

Car holding up well, considering how much I have maintained it, and how it's driven daily.

Adding 160km each weekday, and she plugs away. About 15km is city driving, lights, stops. swerving around squirrels.

Left axle shaft CV joint ( the one I put a repair boot on about 20000km ago) is clicking again, so i picked up a replacement LH axle. It goes in this weekend perhaps. Only major gripe is wiper blades (consumables) and those darn fog bulbs. Maybe the dirt road antics don't help.

Still very happy with the ride. She's showing her age, but still most reliable car I have had the pleasure of owning. Oil change coming up soon too. And a air filter wash and recharge. I'm just lazy.

91k miles, 5.5 years, I'm starting to count the weeks until the last of my powertrain warranty expires. This year's been expensive. I got new, wider tires, which rubbed and required an alignment, brake pads and rotors (which were problematic thanks to the cheap installer), change the transmission oil and I changed all four struts after one of the rear sway bar tabs broke, needing another alignment. Then a CV boot tore - alignment #3. Two days ago a rock chipped my windshield, and I just realized at 90k a coolant flush is overdue. Sigh. At least the timing belt isn't due, and the clutch is still grabby. Watch me jinx myself here...

Well since it's been a long time since I was here I thought I would put in my 2 cents .....

I own 2 Elantras a 2005 and a 2006. Comments on ownership are as follows:

Pro's: Good gas mileage (average over 33 on trips and mid 20's in heavy traffic for both); No major problems to report for repairs; Good bang for the buck; would recommend to others.

Con's: Tires are horrid. I've had to replace both sets of tire way before I though was time. I thought that Michelin was a much better brand. I had to replace the 2005's at 13000 and the 2006's around 10000. I would quit selling tires if I couldn't make a set last over 15000. Interior of the 2006 is a little cheesy. I have a vanity mirror that is falling out of the visor. Not something I would think would happen on a 2 year old car. Not crazy about the oil build up in the intake. Not happy about the transmission fluid problems (replacement with only manufacturers).

These are only minor gripes and still think I got good vehicles. Can't say the dealers are the best as I had problems purchasing my second one.

Posted by: darla88 Dec 30 2008, 02:22 PM

I've had my 2004 Elantra GT now for 4.5 years. The first 2 years I owned it I had a plethora of issues, which most of you veterans know about, ranging from sunroof problems to a frozen brake cable, the a/c condenser went after one year, the front rotors were warped pretty much after taking delivery of it, numerous rattles/squeaks. Now, 4.5 years later, it's been great for the past two years until I crashed it two weeks ago. I'm still waiting for the body work to be done. I'm sure once I get it back it will be full of new rattles but it's to be expected.

My 05 GLS crossed the 100 K miles the week after Thankgiving. Had the side mirror switch repaired, added the radio insulation kit and passenger airbag recall. Had a couple of dents fixed and all maintenance is caught up. So yeah, this Elantra held up fine so far with horror stories to tell.

Mine hit the 41,000KM (that's 25,500mi) mark today; no issues at all. That's in 9.5 months of ownership! I've got a few minor squeaks in the sunroof area, but not overly concerned about it.

I have an '01 GLS, with aftermarket moonroof and Sirius Radio. Purchased in March '08 with about 56K miles on it. As of today, it's nearing 86K. Here's what I got going on:

May '08 -- Transmission malfunction. Sticks in 3rd Gear at random times. Able to manually shift between 2 and 3 when this happens, but that's it. Diagnostic reads 1529 (ECM Alert). Mechanic says that I have a bad sensor on the tranny, and it needs replacement (That, and the fluid needs changing, too). Problem is ongoing, as it is too costly to fix at this time.

June '08 -- Minor collision. I rear-ended a minivan at an intersection when its driver started, then suddenly stopped. No airbag deployment. Minor damage to front bumper (some scuffing) and hood (it looks "popped" but isn't).

July '08 (1) -- #2 spark plug failed. Pulled it out and discoverd corrosion on the threading. The #2 spark plug well is full of oxidation, and remains in that state to this day. Possible cause: Water from dealer cleaning somehow entered the well. Replaced plugs and wires. Problem solved. By the way, if anyone has other theories on this one, I'd like to hear it. Please PM me if you got one...

July '08 (2) -- AIR BAG light came on. Checked fuses; good to go. Thought it may have some something to do with the above-mentioned collision. Received recall notice from Hyundai in December about a fault in 2001 Elentra airbag systems. Repair pending.

August '08 -- Right CV boot found damaged. Discovered when getting new tires. Replaced in December.

December '08 -- Engine starts "missing" at seemingly random times while at idle. Cause unknown at the time...

January '09 (1) -- #3 spark plug wire failed due to fault in the #3 ignition coil. Arcs present at initial stages of acceleration between #3 coil and coilpack mounting bracket. Replaced spark plug wires. Using "stopgap" measures to prevent further damage. Replacement of coilpack is pending. I believe the "missing" I had previously encountered was related to this.

January '09 (2) -- Left CV boot found damaged. Replacement pending. Discovered while searching for a missing engine cover bolt.

As for what's good about the car, she still rides pretty well. I know that once I get needed repairs done, my MPG will go back up, too.

The real bonus: My Sirius is free! Previous owner must've purchased a lifetime plan, so as long as the radio works, I get free satellite! biggrin.gif

Winter is not being kind to my Elantra. The parking brake is out of comission. Then the transmission gets difficult until it warms up. Gears won't engage, or they grind or get stuck. The clutch feels different too - maybe there's some water in the fluid? Now I'm starting to hear the input shaft bearing noise again, but only when it's really cold and it goes away once it's warmed up. The transmission fluid is redline MT90.

This morning I had to move my car slightly to let my wife out... and I heard a loud noise from the starter just as the engine started, as if I held the key to 'start' too long, but I haven't done that in years. And I had to re-adjust my parking and it did the noise a second time. So... sluggish starter clutch or something?

And the CarPC... ugh... half the time the touch-screen gets stuck when it's freezing, so i can't do anything for a few minutes until the blower has a chance to warm it up. Yesterday was so cold the hard drive didn't spin up. Eventually after half an hour with the heat blowing at max it did...but i can expect that to be a recurring problem with cold. Also the hatch struts are too weak to keep the hatch door up.

So yeah... no parking brake, hatch won't stay open, starter grinds, clutch feels weird, transmission gets reluctant, the transmission bearings get noisy and i can hear them because i'm driving in silence because the PC's hard drive won't work. Ah, WINTER!!

June '08 -- Minor collision. I rear-ended a minivan at an intersection when its driver started, then suddenly stopped. No airbag deployment. Minor damage to front bumper (some scuffing) and hood (it looks "popped" but isn't).

July '08 (2) -- AIR BAG light came on. Checked fuses; good to go. Thought it may have some something to do with the above-mentioned collision. Received recall notice from Hyundai in December about a fault in 2001 Elentra airbag systems. Repair pending.

Took my car to the local dealership for the recall repair. AIR BAG light remains on. Now that I know that the recall issue is not the cause, it can only mean damage to something in the the SRS system stemming from the low-speed collision I was in, even though the light didn't come on until about three weeks after the collision.

December '08 -- Engine starts "missing" at seemingly random times while at idle. Cause unknown at the time...

I believe I know the cause of this one. Bad gasoline. During this time, I ran mostly with ARCO gas. Then, a few weeks ago, I started using Shell and Mobil. Last weekend, I filled up at an ARCO station, and the "missing" returned. Then, on Tuesday, I was back to Mobil. Now the "missing" is all but gone.

Replaced the coil pack on Monday. Engine was still "missing", especially when cold on Tuesday morning. Topped off Tuesday night, and the "missing" is all but gone. See note above on ARCO gas.

January '09 (2) -- Left CV boot found damaged. Replacement pending. Discovered while searching for a missing engine cover bolt.

Replaced earlier this month. Feels good to corner with confidence again... driving.gif

There does seem to be a slight shudder at highway speeds, though. My guess is time for a wheel alignment. After all, I did replace both of my CV axles.

Oh, and the odometer now reads 88564

My wife's '06 is holding up pretty well mechanically at 90,000 miles. The only thing that will need to be replaced soon are the struts/shocks and I will be adding a set of springs to it at the same time. The ride is starting to bounce a bit too much. The original clutch is still holding up much to my surprise. The car has numerous dings and small dents, but I attribute that to where my wife parks and how she drives. My Accents at 25,000 miles has some stone chips but no dings.

hey i have an 08 elantra and i love the car but yesterday when i pulled up to the gas station it wouldnt go past neutral? i mean all the gears work fine (auto tran) but i just cant get it into reverse or park without pressing down the shift lock key..could it be the tranny? even tho none of the gears are slipping? im at a lost here i dont know what to do..

I've got just under 70K on my 2003, and other than the obligatory maintenance on the rear calipers, it's doing very well. All of the major maintenence items have been done and the oil gets changed every 3000 - 4000 miles. The paint is holding up very well and that may be due to regular washings and getting a complete wax in the spring and fall. The biggest drama to date was the thrust washer failing causing the crank to walk and blowing out the front seal a month ago. The engine was covered under warranty and the dealer made the whole experience a non-event for me. They replaced the timing belt at the same time and all I had to pay for was just the cost of belt ($55). I've got no major complaints. I really love the car and plan to buy the new Touring model this year. My biggest regret was not buying a Rally Red GT.

Posted by: mlumz Feb 21 2009, 10:01 PM

Holding up strong for an 05 with 47k. Only major probs are the standard dings and dents since I've moved up to NJ and do street parking. NJ people have no idea how to drive or park and believe in the love tap ( I on the other hand would like to love tap their face). Could probably use a new battery and struts sometime in the near future. And my car definitely doesn't like winter.

Hello Guys-
I have an 02 GLS that I purchased in November of 2001. I currently have 120,000 miles. Here's the story on mine:

Maintenance:
Oil changes every 3,000-4,000 miles since new
Tranny fluid changed every 30,000
Spark plugs changed every 60,000 miles, wires changed at 90,000
Brakes (front) replaced at 35,000, 72,000, and 120,000
Rear brakes (drums) and wheel cylinders changed at 72,000, and fluid flushed
Timing belt replaced at 60,000 and 120,000
Water pump replaced at 120,000
Drive belts replaced at 60,000 and 120,000
Hoses changed at 90,000, and coolant flushed
Thermostat replaced at 90,000
Power steering flushed at 90,000
Valve cover gasket replaced at 120,000
Tires replaced at 30,000, 72,000 and 115,000

Warranty items:
Alternator, Battery, and Throttle Position Sensor replaced at 55,000
Center console storage cover replaced at 50,000

Other:
Rear speakers replaced at 120,000 - originals dry rotted. What a pain removing the back dash cover!!!

Interior care:
Vacuumed every 2 weeks
Interior wiped down every 2 weeks
Carpets and mats shampooed every year

Exterior care:
Washed every 2 weeks
Clayed once a year
Machine polished once a year
Waxed every 4 months

High Points:
Car has held up very well for the price. Still looks and drives like new. With 120,000 miles, the engine feels stronger than when new, gets 31mpg around town and 39 on the hwy. Seats (upholstery) have held up well and look new.

Low points:
Carpet seems cheap, headlights haze easily, haven't found a good dealer locally.

^^^ Now that's a great report on a car!!! Welcome to the club!!!

Posted by: Spectre Apr 19 2009, 01:39 PM

Nothing wrong with the car yet. Hope it stays that way.

Posted by: cclngthr Apr 19 2009, 05:09 PM

Lets see (for the HD)

1. Intermittent short in the BCM. Replaced that under a TSB repair.
2. Intermittent short in the AT system causing the trans to shift into 4th or 3rd when the selector is in drive or 3rd. Dealer refused to look at the range switch.
3. Drivers side CV joint noisy when changing directions. Dealer said nothing is wrong. Axle joint broke as a result.

When I had the XD, only trouble was the various TSB fixes and thin paint.

Greeting to all,

I bought my Elantra GT new in 02. Its been going strong since with 124k miles. I don't have any major complaints. I hope to get another 100k smile.gif

Here is all that I have done.

front rotors- that was a pain.
brake pads front and back
belts
timing belt x2
synthetic oil change every 4-5k
plugs and wires x1
coolant flushed x3

Thats it.

I just hit 73k miles, not a single problem. The car doesn't leak one drop of oil either.

Posted by: elantraelite May 18 2009, 07:40 PM

Mine holding up quite well, still has the new car smell still!!

Just hit 61,000KM and 3.5 years old, shes been great to have.

Only problem still is the clunk in the steering, im over caring about getting it fixed now

Otherwise, very happy with the little gun she is

Really close to 100,000mi now. I wish something would go wrong with the powertrain right around now but it looks like it won't. It's actually been a pretty expensive year for my car when I think about it. I got new tires (six now sad.gif ), all four brake rotors and pads. The one strut tab broke (after 4 years with the thicker rear sway bar), so that was a repair, but changing all four struts and putting in camber bolts wasn't - that was between maintenance and upgrade... Now the torn CV boot, new parking brake cables and new radiator were definitely repairs. All in all, I've spent probably $1500+ on repairs, $1000+ on scheduled maintenance (tires, brakes, oil) and I guess three DIY struts and an alignment were $300-400 on upgrades. At 99,850mi, I'll cut this car a break... the maintenance I had coming anyway, and the repairs were unpleasant but I understand things age (rubber CV boots, rubber parking brake boots, uh... plastic radiators?), and it's still comfortable, versatile, stylish, really fun to drive and getting 26+mpg average. I think I'll keep it for now smile.gif

Pretty well.

I bought it 3 years ago today, and have put on 27,775 miles with no problems other than 2 HVAC control light bulbs burning out.

my 01 elantra has 85000k. Doing great. Has been super reliable. I have done mostly all the maintenance and service myself with the exception of the timing belt service which the dealer did at 60000k. Definately showing its age with a few rattles but starts everyday and runs like a champ. i am highly impressed with the hyundai product. I expected a "throw away car" for the price and its past track record( the wife's Excel....POS). My elantra has turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I do expect to add another vechicle to the fleet within the next year or so but I will never get rid of my elantra. Will alway be my commuter. From what I see around here, it's possible to get 200000k out if these cars.

73,514 miles and the '07 HD is dead!
Won't start! Fuel pump, injectors, or ignition problem.
Feck!!

Posted by: sarge Oct 19 2009, 09:11 PM

Have the dealer come pick it up.
Did you get the fuelpump recall performed earlier?

Posted by: fuelrat Oct 20 2009, 12:20 AM

I asked about the fuel pump recall and the service manager said that my VIN does not fall under the recall group.
Waiting until tomorrow so they can try to duplicate the problem.
It starts but only after about 20 minutes and repeated tries.
If it's cold (morning) it has an occasional hesitation or stutter when accelerating. Once the engine has warmed up, it runs fine and will start immediately after shut down.

The problem started friday morning. Had a CEL When it failed to continue to run and I ran in to get my OBDII scanner. There was no code active, pending, or stored. More than likely the light came on as it does in the pre start sequence.

My '04 EGT has been great so far. Hopefully, it will remain that way, as I'll be turning 100K miles and be out of warranty sometime today.

My 2010 elantra se (owned for less than two weeks) was pulling to the right. I noticed this right away but thought maybe it was my imagination or just how the car normally steered. After 100 miles I was convinced there was a definite pull. I called the dealers service department and made an appointment. They said it was slightly out of alignment from the factory. They aligned it and now it runs great with no pull. This is my first hyundai and i really like it. All of the people i talked to who were having their hyundais serviced had nothing but positives to say about their cars, so i am looking forward to years of trouble free driving in my elantra.

2004 GT. Bought new in March 2004.
One problem was the drivers side mirror did not adjust with the control knob.
Repaired under warrantee. May not be working again (my wife is the main driver).
Just noticed the rear window heater switch which also heats the mirrors is not heating the drivers side mirror. Need to look into that as it's Winter.
FM radio hasn't worked in a few years. Am fine and CD works. Gotta check antenna connection. Dealer was no help.
Just over 120000 kms to date.

Posted by: only1db Dec 29 2009, 09:10 AM

recall was only for southern states....i must of done like 50 of those damn things.

i have e167k on the tick and the worst thing that has happened is the dif pin came out and i had to replace the tranny. but i did it myself and four hours later and a new clutch...i was driving again.

2003 Elantra GLS.
142,000 miles.
bone stock.
wife's daily driver, bought brand new.

only ONE repair to date: radiator cracked, and was replaced.
(oh and the dashboard clock stopped working right, but the aftermarket stereo has a clock, so no big deal)
deer hit the car's side once, minor damage, easily fixed (paid by insurance in full)

Otherwise, still going strong, and looking good smile.gif
(engine may have gotten a bit rackety sounding at idle with time, but it was always kinda noisy at idle, i thought)

05 GT with 37999miles on it. Bought the car from a worker at the car dealership. Only had to drive like 2 miles a day. And I don't drive a long way all the time. But so far so good. I think one of my ball joints are going bad tho... Sometimes when it's cold I will turn and it makes a nasty pop noise....

Posted by: fsv87 Mar 22 2010, 05:07 PM

I have a 2001 GLS with 79000 miles. The only problems I've had have been minor so far. The MAP sensor crapped out almost a year ago, and I rode with that for too long. I believe that's what lead to the demise of my catalytic converter and O2 sensor (running too rich for too long).

My power windows are on their way out. The front driver's side works normally, but the passanger side only works if you push the button on the passanger door (kind of hard and repeadedly), the rear windows will go down while using the driver's controls, but won't go up unless you go back there and push the button on each window to go up.

Also, my power door locks are shot. I have a feeling this might be from moving to Miami. I live right on the water, and I don't think my car likes that too much.

Other than regular maintanence like oil changes and I had the spark plugs changed about 4 months ago, this car runs like a dream. Still gets great gas mileage, still peppy as the day I got her, and the a/c blows as cold as anything.

2005 Elantra GT, the only work done after the 5/60000 bumper to bumper warranty was a stuck thermastat that need replaced, and i did in fact get that coverd.

02 egt with a little over 179k miles has had front subframe and both front lcas replaced under recall. Slave cylinder, all struts and springs, 1 inner tie-rod and both outters, both front wheel bearings, one rear one, both parking brake cables, manifold and first cat replaced under recall, new rear calipers, all rotors and pads of course, Clutch and flywheel, And I think thats all of the stuff that has been replaced on my car, I think thats pretty darn good for 179k and being an 02. It does need a little body work and a paint job and I HOPE I will finally get around to doing it someday. I haven't had the chance.

I'm at 84k now, and my car does nothing but give me check engine lights. For the first, I'd say, 75k miles it was wonderful. Not a trouble in the world, but now it's killing me. I'm going to have to replace the check engine bulb soon because it's on so much.

I've coddled this thing like it was my first born, and now it's throwing it right back in my face.

Posted by: Doohickie Jul 7 2010, 11:45 AM

Coming up to the end of the full bumper-to-bumper 60k warranty, car will be 5 years old in October. Early on I had several check engine lights that turned out to be caused by evap system problems. I suspect the dealer over-filled the tank at initial delivery since I got much better mileage on that tank than in subsequent tanks of gas which could indicate an overfill. Several dealer visits finally fixed that under warranty.

I had an airbag sensor failure on the passenger seat which was also fixed under warranty, as well as the driver's seat frame which had become loose. I don't think I've had any other problems other than maybe light bulbs, until recently, when I developed a suspension clunk at 58k miles. The dealer replaced both lower control arms and the right side strut in the front of the car. I wish they would have replaced the struts as a pair, but the car rides fine as it is. We'll see how it behaves after it goes off warranty.

Now that the XD has gone out of production, the dealer seems to view my car as a "classic", at least as far as Hyundais are concerned, and I usually get compliments on what great shape it's in.

Posted by: MikeIvie Jul 8 2010, 09:57 PM

I got my Elantra in the summer of 04. So going on 6 years since I've had it.

Well I blew an Engine 2 years ago or so (around 40k-50kmiles). Not sure what really caused it, but I blew a connecting rod ( I think what it was) though the front (side) of the engine. I'm thinking it had to do with my ex hydrolocking my engine. When I was in Virgina, I had put a CAI on and told her to avoid puddles. Me and my girlfriend ended up breaking up and she was still using my car to get to work until her plane flew her back out to Seattle. Well few days before she left, it rained hard and she drove my car though a huge puddle and hydrolocked the car. I got there and the 7/8 of the front tire was submerged. She kept trying to start it she said. After a few oil changes and drying it out, it never felt the same again. Little less than 2 years later is when I blew the engine coming home from work. What a event that was. Had to replace the alternator, starter, and battery along with the new-used engine. About the same time my blew, another member on EXD had his 04 engine throw a rod as well... I think.

Just before my clutch job this past month, I had discovered both of my CV axles outer boots were torn.

Other than a normal wear and tear items such as wheels and clutches. However car has 75k miles but the replacment engine has less than 40k miles.

Also my 1st gear grinds when going from N to 1st. Suspension seems fine, A/C I think may need some servicing. Other than that, car seems fine.

It does have a slight oil leak now, but other than that.... thumbsup.gif

Posted by: cobas Jan 10 2011, 09:37 PM

Yeah... you should never see that light come on. Unless it's burning oil badly enough that the pressure gets low every 3,000mi. But that's a problem in itself.

I'm at 122k now. Quite a few things have worn out and been replaced, but almost nothing has outright broken. The radiator broke; the sun visor vanity mirror cover broke (replaced under warranty), the valve cover gasket leaked slightly (replaced under warranty) and most importantly, the transmission input shaft bearing got noisy prematurely(replaced under warranty). The rest is aging problems. Like the frozen parking brake: the rubber boot ages, cracks, leaks... freezes. Pleasant, no. Sudden complete failure..not really. The rubber CV boot cracked, the rubber strut mounts are old and cracked, the wheel bearings wore out this year, I'm on the second clutch, the first and second gear synchros are fine for 'normal' driving only, the paint is fading on the door handles, I'm on the third battery, there's a hint of rust now on a rocker panel, the floor mat has a hole where my heel rests, a handful of headlamp and brake light bulbs have been replaced over the years - fewer than I expected. The ABS sensor that was on the blink last year seems to have behaved this past year.

Besides those things, it's just been 122k miles of maintenance. No brake problems, no suspension problems, no steering problems, no engine problems, no electrical problems, no instrument or control problems, no stereo problems, no leaks, no squeaks, no rattles (the sunroof creaks) - everything works and the leather seats look pretty new.

Incidentally, I briefly tried hypermiling on a roadtrip by turning the engine off during long highway downhill parts (yes, dangerous, not recomended) and restarting it by letting out the clutch (gently) in 5th at 50mph - don't do it. It's too much slippage to go from 0rpm to 2500rpm no matter how gently you engage it. The clutch was slipping for a while after I did that and scared the crap out of me (well, the scared the cash out of me). But it's recovered. I can now floor it in 2nd and 3rd from 4,000 to redline and it won't slip - but I think it's close. I barely have to touch the pedal to get it to slip. I've even gotten used to shifting slowly with the not-so-good synchros. It's not sporty, reving through one gear before slowly switching to the next... but it has a certain old-timey feel to it.

Thats an oil pressure light, not an oil level light. How many miles are you going between changes???

Posted by: AeroEagle333 Jan 19 2011, 02:50 PM

First time poster here.

I own a 2009 Elantra that I picked up in August of 2009 with the Cash for Clunkers deal the government was giving out. Shortly after purchasing it the airbag malfunction warning light came on and wouldn't go away. After four visits to the dealer so they could clear the codes, they finally diagnosed it as a faulty airbag harness. Once they replaced that the problem didn't come back.

Aside from that issue, I've really enjoyed the car. I drove it from Connecticut to Washington D.C. and back and it was a very enjoyable trip for my three passengers and I. Lately, however, I've noticed my gas mileage has really taken a hit. I know gas mileage is effected by winter, but I've gone from almost 400 miles to a tank down to less than three hundred? Anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: jamhandman Jan 19 2011, 05:08 PM

I think it's the Winter mix. I have 3.5 years on my 2007 and the only thing that is really bad is the front dash board doesn't shine anymore. So I have to keep applying some product to it. I don't mind, just wish this wasn't the case for a "new" car sad.gif

I can go ~10K, if it's got full synthetic in it. The car has 250K miles on it. It's no longer under warranty. I've not had any major mechanical problems with the engine. And yes, I know oil is cheaper than metal. The foreign cars I've owned (76 VW Rabbit, 78 Toyota Celica, 88 Hyundai Excel, 80 Datsun 200SX, 84 BMW 325) that I've owned were all high mileage when they finally bit the dust or I sold them. I put every mile on both Hyundais that I've owned and treated them both the same.

Most of my miles have been highway/rural roads. I do drive some in city traffic (if you can call maneuvering in cities with populations of less than 10K people city traffic), and the very rare trip to the big city (100K pop).

I figure all the cars I've owned (except the American made two - Acckk!) were made on Wednesday. gleaming.gif

On a run to bring back some take-out food with some friends, I went around a 270-degree cloverleaf ramp and the passenger in the back seat (very familiar with that cloverleaf) says "This is a Hyundai? An Elantra? Your car takes corners much better than mine," and I say "That was actually slow, I didn't want the food to spill," and my wife says "Yeah, he usually likes to take corners a lot faster, it's good you're wearing your seatbelt back there." The passenger says "You'd get sick taking that ramp like that in my car."

Does that make the 17x7" wheels, the low-profile 215-wide tires, the upgraded sway bar, newish struts and -1.5 degree camber bolts all worth it? ...kinda.

Oh, and her car is an '08 Elantra GLS. biggrin.gif Haha
125,000mi and still fun (and still 27mpg on my commute). I just bought new tires and all four fit side-by-side in the trunk, without folding the seats down. Man I do love hatchbacks...

Part of the reason, frankly, that I don't post much anymore is that my Elantra just runs and runs and runs. I think I just clicked past 65,000 miles and it's just a stick the key in and go kind of car. Except for a few minor dings, it looks pretty good too.

Posted by: okmic1 Apr 24 2011, 12:47 AM

I've owned my '06 since new. The only things it needs right now are another windshield, cd player skips and I think the windshield wiper pump is out. I haven't really checked the pump yet, that's just a guess based on not hearing it when I engage the switch. It's got a few paint chips in it too. Over all it's been an impressive car.

Posted by: elantraGT5Speed Nov 17 2011, 12:51 PM

The only complaint I have about my '05 is that the pedal and engine beg me to push it. I had a friend tell me the same thing about his late eighties Porsche. It could be psychological >.<

Mine is a 2000 gls 4dr......I call it the energizer bunny...

as of this morning...258987 miles....original clutch...original rear brakes....only 1 timing belt been replaced...other than normal wear and tear on the outside it still looks decent....no headliner...seats and carpet are in great shape.....engine...well...most days 30 - 32 mpg....i have developed a nasty leak in the oil pan area...so im about due for either an oil pan gasket or a rear main seal....ugggg...

Hey-Wow! You've gotten your money's worth out of your car.
Why no headliner?

I have to get a new clutch cable, and clutch for my 07 GLS. Yippee.

07 Elantra Limited currently at dealer for steering column replacement. Knocking and grinding in column started approx 1 mo. ago. Dealer diagnosed as needing the steering column replaced. While performing the service I received a call yesterday from the dealership that a mechanic had sheared off a bolt during assembly and that car will not be ready for at least 3 days awaiting additional parts to come in. Loaner car given on day 1, July 25 2013. Steering column is being replaced under extended warranty that was purchased when car was bought in July 2007. Jan. 2009 to July 2011 was the only issue to this point. Fork release bearing had been replaced 2x under warranty when same issue occurred for a 3rd time in July of 2011(clutch pedal binding when depressed). A casting defect was finally discovered in gear box housing. Gearbox was replaced under warranty. Car currently has 47000 miles. No issues with fork release bearing since gearbox replacement 2 years ago.

That's why I love Hyundai warranty!

Posted by: Tom06 Jul 28 2013, 09:26 AM

My car is holding up great. 7 years old and 84K miles and it pretty much looks brand new.

Only two problems are a few tiny dings from falling objects or doors opening into the car ( mad.gif ) and that the wiper arms are looking rusty. That will be easily fixed with some black engine paint though.

I kind of want a new car and can afford it but this one is doing too well to justify it!

I have a 2013 Elantra. First disappointment was getting a flat tire and going in the trunk to find NO SPARE TIRE (dealer showed us where the spare was on the fancy floor model...guess he forgot to let me know MY car didn't come with one)....the black tape around my windows is chipping (apparently from where the snow scraper touched it....never owned a car that this happened to before)...some of the black on the back bumpers is showing through right under my silver paint - like its washing right off......my right rear tire keeps losing air pressure (not the same tire that I had to have completely replaced due to the flat tire) and last but not least, IT SUCKS IN THE SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Every time I hit the gas the tires spin no matter how much snow is on the ground. They told me this was good in the snow but I'm scared to death to drive it! Yesterday my car slid really far and I almost hit a jeep - very close call. I drive 25miles to get to work which makes for a really ugly drive in when it snows....very disappointed in this car. Gas milage is also not what the saleman told me it would be either....best thing about the car? I guess it looks really nice, but that isn't why I bought a new car!!! sad.gif

Posted by: elantragt Dec 15 2013, 11:04 PM

Stephanie sorry you're so disappointed with the car. The spare tire thing... that's on your dealer for not letting you know. Unfortunately, most new cars are going the no spare tire route.

The flat? Any car can get a flat tire.

The truth is. the tires that come with this car (and most cars frankly) aren't going to be great in snow. You may want to consider snow tires.

The brakes on this car are good. Remember, with ABS you don't want to pump the brake like you would on a non-ABS car when you slide. You want to keep the pedal firmly and continuously pressed.

As far as your disappointing gas mileage, there are so many variables from proper tire pressure to how heavy your foot is.

I'm not making excuses here, just letting you know your car may not be as bad as you've decided it is.

Posted by: Alex2013GT Dec 15 2013, 11:20 PM

Stephanie, the Elantra does fine in the snow (well as well as any FWD small sedan will do) if you have good tires on it. The factory tires are not going to be very good in the snow, but if you get a fair amount of snow, a set of snow tires on steel wheels is a very good investment and will significantly change your perception of how the car performs in snow.

Yes, as you found out no Elantra sedan models come with a spare, unless you purchase a spare tire kit. If the dealership is showing a vehicle with a spare, either that is an evil marketing ploy or that car just happened to have a kit in the car which would've showed as a dealer add-on in the price. The GT on the other hand comes with one, but as you found out you just have the "tire repair" kit in the trunk. There are many topics where other users have purchased spare tires if you would like one.

Regarding your tire that keeps losing pressure, my concern is that there is a cause as to why it is losing pressure. Maybe somewhere along the line you picked up a screw in the tire which is causing you to have a slow leak? If you already haven't, it might be worthwhile to have a shop take a look at it. Most will do that for free.

I agree that the bumpers seem to be a little thin with paint, but I guess most "economy" cars are similar. That is one place I wished they wouldn't have skimped on to keep the price as low as possible. I haven't noticed anything on my rear bumper, but it seems my front bumper has more than its fair share of stone chips already after just one year (more so than with other Hyundai's and vehicles I've owned).

If the door trim is peeling/damaged, that would likely be replaced under warranty, unless it is obvious the user caused the damaged. It is basically just black tape that is covering it. You could also look at getting door pillar covers which would add a little flare to the car and cover any damage if you didn't want to go the dealership route. Good luck and let us know if we can help with anything! thumbsup.gif

my neighbor down the block just totaled his 2013 BMW X5 suv on saturday in the snow

abs, traction control, all the safety goodies except one

the voice coming through the stereo telling him NOT TO GO MORE THAN 60 IN THE SNOW

wish i could get pics of it

so steph, drive carefully in the snow with a set of snow tires (i have 2 extra rims for my 2001 XD that have snow tires on them)

Would not buy Hyundai if I could do it all over again.
Bought new in 2006.
55k miles now.

1 - Consumes oil very early on. 1/2 qt per 1,000 miles with 5w-20. 1/4 qt with 10w-30.

2 - Side mirrors switch problem. The mirrors move all over the place but not to the positions you wanted. Warranty replacement unit was good for 2 weeks and same thing happen. I found a work around by rocking the "L" "R" selector back and ford to rub off the internal corrosion from the electrical contacts.

3 - The wheel alignments are off (+ camber) and can not be adjusted any further. 4 tires' outer edges were worn down to the bone while the rest of the tires were still very good. 4 premature death at 30,000 miles.

4 - Left rear break problem. Break pads worn at extreme angle and one side was much more than the other( looks like triangular pads). The pads also do not make contact with the whole rotor. The outer edge (10mm) of the rotor has a rust ring around it, meaning the pads are not contacting that area.

5 - PCV valve is stuck to the engine cover (plastic) due to RED thread lock used (how stupid is that?). Trying to remove the PCV will most likely cause the brass insert to break loose (damage) from the engine cover (pcv still stuck to the insert).

6 - Clutch problem. Luckily, I am mechanically incline so I was able to find the problem but the average owners would have to spend the $ to find out. Unluckily, I can not find a place that sell this broken c-clip (unique shape) (less than 25 cents to make). Dealer only sells the whole unit which is about $90.

My car was definitely built on FRIDAY.

Will not buy Hyundai again.

Hey-Wondering if you bought this car new or used.

Posted by: Tune8 Jan 18 2014, 12:46 AM

Bought new.

Yet, my dads 06 civic is on the second tranny, it a 5 speed to boot. All your issues are common issue on this car. We all know about them and are very small issues, cheap to fix.

Posted by: Tune8 Jan 18 2014, 01:28 AM

Unfortunately, tires are not cheap, engine cover is not cheap, break job is not cheap, c-clip is cheap but they don't sell it, oil consumption could be $$$$ if it's due to engine problems.

Posted by: mlumz Jan 18 2014, 02:39 AM

Your rear caliper could be due to a tear in the emergency brake cable causing the caliper to bind. This also can affect your tire wear (also check your suspension to make sure nothing is loose like swaybar endlinks, etc).

I've had mine new since 05 and it has nearly 98,000 miles and it's been great. No major mechanical problems, just basic maintenance.

Posted by: Amethyst1 Feb 26 2014, 08:51 PM

I hate driving any car, so I have only about 3500 miles on it since July 2013 when I purchased it. No road trips.

So Far so good. I hear the motor more than I care to on the road. Not the quietest ride.

A little thing is that the satellite radio does not light up at night, so I cannot tell what station is on! But I do like the radio a lot.

This is my first Hyundai and I would say it will probably not last as long as my wife's Civic. The Civic had better suspension and body hardware. I have not driven the current Elantras but according to CU and Car and Driver magazine it is very good.

Posted by: mlumz Apr 1 2014, 09:19 PM

bigdon what year is your elantra?

My 05 has over 100,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. A few simple suspension mods will help the car handle a 100x better.

we are limping our 02 GLS along. the body is starting to rot out pretty behind the rear shock towers in the wheel well (where it starts to rot at the body/bumper bolt)

engine tick is getting louder every week. front struts i believe need to be replaced. really trying not to put any money into it and praying it lasts until february smile.gif

i bought my 03 GT in 2003 new with 1500 miles Demo and am very please and still like driving it .I have 62,000 miles and had to do back brakes a few years back last year thew power steering Pump had to be replace with one from NAPA it is squealing again.Washer pump is not working and need to replace.Paint is good ecept for spoiler which seemed light on clear coat from start, probably my best car ever .Jerry

Posted by: roydjt Jun 9 2014, 11:26 AM

Hey Jerry, does your washer pump sound like it's trying to work? I used some Rain-X additive in my washer fluid and I think it gummed up the lines. I backflushed the lines (meaning I unplugged the hose at the jet and blew in them) and they started to work again. Might give that a try.

OH, and that moldy smell that the car emits after using the A/C.

I had this issue with cars in the past as well. If it is still happening its an easy fix. Remove the cabin air filter if your car has one, then turn on the AC, and using Lysol spray can, spray it into the intake between the hood and the windshield. The air being drawn in sometimes carries stuff in with it, and the Lysol almost always kills it when this is done. Another alternative is to go to an auto parts store, or Walmart even has it is Meguiars whole car air refresher. With this you close the car up, turn the AC on and put this on the floor and pop it open. Let the AC run for 10 min closed up, then open the car for 15 to air out. It works really well for odor in the seats as well. My mom has a car that is stored for 6 months a year and this completely cleared up the musty odor on it.

I've got a little over 115,000 miles on my elantra. Still driving smooth as new. This year all the maintenance has lined up and I've been tempted to get a new car to replace this one, but it's hard when it works well enough.

I got to do a tranny/coolant flush, timing belt (water pump, etc.), maybe new brakes in the front and SHOULD get new all-seasons. (I have a winter tire set.)

Well just wanted to report that the HD Elantra is aging as any modern car should.
