So, as my wife's Taurus approaches 100,000 miles (and the end of its extended warranty), we may be looking into a replacement. On the short list, is, well, the Ford Fusion. Frankly, she'll look at that and if she likes it, she'll buy it. The slightly longer lists consists of:

Ford Fusion
Mercury Milan (yeah, I know, basically the same car)
Saturn Aura
Hyundai Sonata (she's not enthusiastic about Hyundais but I'd like her to look at it)

Whatever she gets will probably be a V6 with Auto (although she may consider I4 if there is a significant fuel economy jump, but still with AT).

Now, assuming she isn't 123% satisfied when she looks at the Fusion she may consider other cars. As far as a test drive goes, she'll be able to make up her mind what she likes. When I ask for ratings, what I'm hoping to get is personal experience on these cars. Are they reliable? What are the car's weak points? Is there something I should really know about the car before buying it?

I expect a pro-Hyundai bias on this forum, but try to keep an even keel.

Considering how you say your wife is, i doubt she will be greatly disappointed with the Fusion.

Look into the new Taurus. I liked the 500.

Well my dad has a Fusion (got it several months ago) and has been very happy with the car. He has the higher end V6 model (not sure the specifics though). It is a company car which replaced his last company car which was the 3.5 Altima sedan (which he really enjoyed). He was a little disappointed by having to change cars, but since he's had the Fusion, he's been really happy with it (and he's pretty picky about his cars).

I have the Sonata (duhhh) and really like the car, except for my gas mileage (although the car I would say is average for a V6 engine). I love the exterior styling and my only "complaint" would be a somewhat bland center console & interior which judging from pictures they really spruced up on the '09 model.

My mother-in-law has a milan and really loves the car. Don't have much specifics on it and it is fairly new, she got it for x-mas except that it looks nice.

I don't know anyone with a Saturn Aura, so unfortunately no personal stories there.

I would say, my deciding factor of all the options would most likely be price, because I think all the sedans look nice and would do the job for her. If she is really biased about the Ford Fusion, I don't think she'll be walking off the Ford lot empty handed. The fusion is a nice car, and I can't really say much anything negative about it.

I guess my (slightly slanted) ratings would be as follows:

1. Sonata
2. Fusion

I'm not rating the other two, because I really don't know enough about the Aura to form a conclusion and because between the Milan and the Fusion, I would get the Fusion, therefore the Milan wouldn't even make my list. I just checked out the Aura and list MSRP seems a fair amount higher than the Sonata (and fusion) ($20,695 for the 4cyl and 26,325 for the 6 cyl). So for that reason alone I would cross it off my list.

My choice in this category:

1.) Malibu
2.) Sonata (09 is fantastic interior)
3.) Aura
4.) Fusion
.
.
.
19.) Milan. Why pay MORE for the same car?

Some will pay for the extra amenities. (not that there is much would be better to jump to the MKZ if you want the luxury stuff)

Sorry, but they're buying a name now-adays.

Would she even consider a GM, or is she like half the rest of the country and still blinded by the 80's GMs?

Eh, and leather seats, and IMO better styling for only $1,000 more. I'd be tempted for the Milan vs. the Fusion. Both of those have the SYNC system on them, which sounds really cool.

If I had a choice of Fusion or Milan would go with the Milan the name sounds better to me. And at least it would not self destruct smile.gif Fusion BOOM

Of course that is my opinion and it means NOTHING here tongue.gif

Actually, Edmunds True Market Value is within a couple hundred bucks on the Milan versus the Fusion, and I think the Milan has a longer list of standard equipment. I also like the looks of the Milan a little better.

The Mercury versions tend to retain their value better than their Ford twins from what I've seen. If she does get the V6 Fusion, I'd recommend getting some chrome exhaust tips to put over the blah tailpipes... my nephew put some on his 07 Fusion SE V6... looks soooo much better considering the car already has cut-outs in the bumper.

These days, I wouldn't know what I'd be shopping for... nothing seems to move me anymore.
