So I had the urge to go out and get a new deck since the stock one skipped a couple cds.. and why not just use mp3s anyways?

I got myself a JVC KD-G430 and as it stands/sits right now I've got the harness all soldered together and ready to plug in tomorrow on my lunch break... yeap, probably gonna do it then. - only missing the final taping and zip-tying (forgot to buy those)

I was debating on a Sony that had a USB plug upfront, but it looked kinda shabby, so I'll stick with the plain aux input for my g/f's iPod when she's in the car on trips.

pics to come

Nice - I'm excited to see finished pictures. I'm interested to see what the colour scheme will look like with our green & blue interior lighting.

I had a tough choice when I bought mine...because USB would be so appealing...especially since the HU's have file management and a 2GB flash drive is about $40!

but I opted for the rear aux plug, so I can hide my input and the girl can still use her MP3 player too.

OKay - so the desk is in - looks decent - though the little face edging/bezel doesn't fit under the dash trim properly... will have to think of something there - or just leave it

sound is working great and setup properly. When I had it hooked up to test I was able to do everything (including dimming - which many people say not to hook up) So I go to put the dash trim back on and then take it for a trip in the parking lot to test out the clutchectomy I did during the deck install (little confusing)... turns out I plugged the hazards and the rear wiper in the wrong plugs, so when I turned the car 'on' the rear wiper would go and spray, and the wiper button controlled the dash lights on and off. huh.gif
took me a little bit to figure that out, but now I don't have any dash lights.... crap!
the clock comes on and I can hear the headlight relay kick in when turning on the lights - but no dash lights or clock dimming.

What did I do??? (other than the obvious)

I've removed the deck, harness and tried it with everything unplugged except the dimmer switch and still nothing. The fuses I checked are good.

Please Please suggestions... heading on evening drives this weekend - would like to see my speed

The dimmer switch on the left side of the dash - did it come loose, or did you plug it back in?

OKay - so not so bad as I had thought... only ended up being the rear brake light fuse that had blown.

never would have thought to check that one though....
swapped it out and now I've got my dash back up, dimming and the deck dims like the clock.
pics in a bit

Did you disconnect the battery when you did the install?

I'm a bad man... no I did not... but never had an issue like this before - serves me right for plugging the hazards into the wiper and vise-versa

Here are some pics from the install...

I'll have to get one at night to see how the lights all play out together with the dash

I'm always scared to work on electrical components while it's hot. I've fried a few wires, so I play it safe. I have seen many people burn fuses when swapping out radios and with the Elantra, we see it a lot!

Doohickie highly cautions against connecting the dimmer circuit (as you have maybe read...), but I'm convinced this is maybe just voodoo, and we should experiment on our own freewill.

My Alpine is blinding at night, so with your bravdo, I may connect the dimmer circuit this coming weekend.

I guess it may depend on the deck and how you have it hooked up.

Was actually alot easier doing it with the harness than I was thinking.... connect like wires, plug in, enjoy.
*as long as you plug everything else back in correctly should be good

My own stupidity has gotten me where I am today, and for that I'm thankful. biggrin.gif
