I bought a Porter Cable DA and bottles of Meguire's M105 and M205 to give the car some more shine. I now have the shiniest orange peel in the city and I am not satisfied. From reading the posts about orange peel it seems that wet sanding is not recommended. Has anyone wet sanded an Elantra or has anyone used a paint thickness gauge on one. I'm curious about the actual thickness of the paint.

You might find the info that you want by just reading or you might want to sign up and post the question. That forum is very active and people from weekend detailers to master detailers who make their living doing this will be ready to answer your question. By the way, I am going to Lowes as I heard that they were having a sale on Porter Cable until Thanksgiving. -------------------- A proud member of the club.

Mayberryman,
I am a member of the Autogeek forum. Autogeek and Youtube is where I picked up all of my information on how to do detailing. Autogeek is also where the general consensus is to live with the orange peel and just apply paint sealer or wax or both. The reasoning is that modern paint jobs are very thin and very hard. I checked around for the Porter Cable DA and found that Lowe's had the best price, but you had to order it online and then it would be sent to your local store for pickup. Not a bad deal, considering that you sidestep shipping cost. Being an instant gratification kind of guy, I bought mine from Chemical Guys. They are located nearby and they included backing pad for velcro foam pads. Plus I got a bunch of free advice from the experts there. They are also leery of wet sanding late model paint jobs, by the way. Thank you for the suggestions, though. I appreciate it. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them. Then you can tell me that I'm way too picky and that I should live with it Fuzz P.S I've only been married for 40 years last September. Not many couples around that have been married that long. -------------------- A proud member of the club.

Oem paint jobs are usually 3-6 mils (1 mil is a thousandth of an inch) only about 1-1.5 mil is clearcoat.

I don't own a thickness gauge, but I tried sanding down the orange peel using 2500 and 3000 grit sand paper and buffed it out using m105 and 205. So far so good.
