Well,
I bought:
New head unit JVC KD-X200
Rear speakers: JBL CS-69 - 6"x9"
Front speakers: Pioneer TS-G1721i

I watched this awesome video on youtube for installing the and went to task.

Here are the pics I took as I went along:

Unfortunately, my head unit cage doesn't fit into the OEM steel cage (height wise) so I've removed that as a separate item and need to cut the steel cage to get it to fit in. Just hope it all fits in, in the end, and I get a good result. At the moment I'm driving around without the dashboard.

When I went to work, I realised that you need the hazard switch plugged in for your indicators to work. That's a tip right there.
The only other thing which caused me a problem was that my dash lights didn't work. I think you must need the brightness adjustment switch plugged in for that to work.

Anyhow, tomorrow I'll go to work with the jigsaw and cut the top off the metal cage which comes with the car. It should still be quite stable with the 3 sides, the steel seems pretty hefty, and the rivets are welded so I've got no real other option. Then hopefully I can get the dashboard re-installed.

Wish me luck!

Will update with pics. smile.gif

Looking forward to seeing it! That steel cage looks like the factory one I know with extra bits of metal attached around the front.

And yeah you're right about thwe dimmer switch needing to be plugged in.

Well it has been a while (LOL at saying it would take a weekend) but I have finally completed the journey into getting JUST the head unit installed.
It was quite easy using the jigsaw to take off the top of the steel cage, and it was a really tight squeeze with the JVC cage fitting inside even after that.

I live a busy life, and I'm on annual leave at the moment, so messing around with the car is high on my list of priorities.

Here is a picture of the final result of the install of the head unit. I'm really happy with it, the only thing which I don't like about it is that I can't change the colour, so it is red, while everything else is either blue or green. biggrin.gif
The thing I like most about my head unit is that it doesn't stand out, and looks pretty standard.

As for the lack of an external antenna I'm pretty stumped on this one. I plugged the antenna wire in, and I'm able to pick up like 5 or 6 stations, but definitely not the full range of FM stations, so my guess is that at some point along the cable it has been cut and/or hidden inside some random area.

I'll definitely find it at some point.

Next on my task list (in terms of car audio) is to install the rear 6 x 9 speakers.
