I've been in a similar situation... still am, sorta:
My wife also got a 2014 Mazda 6 (same car OP got) and we love it... With that, her 2003 XD became an "extra" car - we decided to keep it. It allows me to drive it to work, where I don't want to drive my German garage queen. It allows us to have a "beater" and a grocery getter etc. It now has 215k miles. And still running strong. No oil burning or anything... I recently got new front shocks for it. T belt and spark plugs are probably due soon. Paint on all horizontal areas - hood, roof, trunk has faded and oxidized... 1 crack on dashboard. Otherwise interior is in top shape, and engine too. Recently I also thought of getting rid of it, but after much thinking, I decided to give it a new goal of 300k miles. I think it can do it. It pulls to the right, probably some suspension part worn out or out of alignment, or both. I drive it about 5 times a week probably...a 30 mile roundtrip. So right now it needs: new tires, new paint, (plugs and t belt not immediately but soon, and perhaps brakes, too, but not sure HOW essential those things are), and a washer fluid pump (a generous member here donated one to me, I think I can do that and plugs/wires myself..probably) I know tires are a must... But how critical is the rest of it? I need it to go another 80k at least. If you were me, which things would you do / not do? I know the paint is not an ESSENTIAL thing, BUT we're emotionally attached to this car and are VERY grateful for its service. So I think a cheap paint job is a like a "reward" for Ellie... -------------------- 03 GLS

glad u like it. personally some of those bells and whistles just add camoflauge to who the terrible drivers are. i wish they'd make a car like the Johns Phone. like how cars were before babysitting gadgets helped defeat darwin theories. not talking about you. just that manufacturers make it easier for people who shouldnt be driving in the first place on the road. lol Couldn't agree more. It should be up to the driver to keep his/her car out of the ditch and not a bunch of computers. Relying on technology like the way we do breeds carelessness, carelessness breeds accidents, and that leads manufacturers to cram more idiot proof gadgets into our cars to keep us from crashing. Cars are getting safer and drivers are getting dumber. It's a slippery slope from there. -------------------- Hopes and dreams, ways and means

As far as values go Check some other sites. I ran my wife's 03' on KBB and NADA guides. NADA says its worth clean retail of $3800+. Much higher than KBB. Checking on Craigslist I find owners and dealers asking $4000.00 to $6000.00 for nice examples. Some with more miles than the wife's. One dealer near me is asking $9500.00 for a nice 04' GT hatchback with 80,000 miles. Go figure.
