ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Group Buys _ 07.07.07 removable hatch rear strut bar

Posted by: gonzo777 Jun 12 2007, 08:33 PM

Well everyone, the day is approaching.

I have all the tech details and all the bugs (that I can find) worked out of the design.

With all the time it's taken thus far, and the brackets being VERY labor intensive, I wanted to have the brackets made before I announced a group buy. The bars and the anodizing are simple, but I don't have the cash to front for it so this will be a 'group buy'.

I just received enough metal for a batch of 10 pairs of brackets, and a new band saw. The brackets will be made in the next 2 weeks.

The group buy for "GonzoSport" removable rear strut tower bars will begin Saturday July 7th, 2007.... 07.07.07

More details will be coming soon.

Our website isn't ready yet (because I haven't sent Tim any text yet) but...http://g7innovation.com

OMG OMG you had to wait until I didn't have an XD2...

Not set in stone yet, but solidifying......

Looking like $130 for confirmed V.I.P. ElantraClub Members, $150 for everyone else.

Shipping should be <$10.

**********

Made of 6063 aluminum with stainless hardware.

Each bracket is about 1+hrs labor at drill press, band saw, grinder, sander, and polisher plus some fun elements that must be finished by hand.

Posted by: flcerberus Jun 12 2007, 09:31 PM

As I said before you can count me in!

Posted by: Doohickie Jun 12 2007, 09:50 PM

I'm interested, but not right away.... I ended up blowing the mod budget on mere junk when I coulda had a strut bar!

I'll try to scrape it together though, maybe later this summer....

Congrats on the rollout though! This is an exciting time to be an XD hatch driver!

Posted by: NY2002ElantraGT Jun 12 2007, 10:24 PM

OMG my girlfriend just thought i wont the lottery with the reaction i just had when i read this! FINALLY! Glad to have you back Gonzo.

Posted by: Silent Wolf Jun 12 2007, 11:27 PM

Where do I pay? tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Leaving the bar silver? or can it be black?

Posted by: gonzo777 Jun 12 2007, 11:47 PM

In taking a page from Mr. Ford's book..... whatever color you want so long as you want black. biggrin.gif

If you REALLY have to have a custom color ... the MINIMUM it will cost me PER COLOR is $60 ... and that's a number I was given 6mos ago.

How did the handling perform during testing? Any major differences? Pros, Cons? Any permanent ugly modifications necessary for the interior?

(only the decals are 3/4" tall)

In a few words:
I didn't realize just how much flex the body of the hatch has until I added a bar.
In a slalom-type situation it makes the car snap right back. You'll realize just how sluggish the roll makes the car without it.

Interior-wise you will have to cut holes for the brackets to pass through both the felt-type interior paneling as well as cut a notch in the grey plastic of the speaker cover. Templates will be provided to minimize error.

Posted by: cobas Jun 14 2007, 09:49 PM

I'd also be very tempted, especially with the -20 for VIPs. It is something I wasn't planning though, so it's going to be a treat to myself...
Oh yeah, any idea how much tension it would take to shear that bolt?

http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=201865

According to the spec lists I'm ordering from:

Bolts are 18-8 Stainless and will handle up to 70,000 PSI.

Bracket and bar material yield at 16,000 PSI.

Posted by: Silent Wolf Jun 14 2007, 11:44 PM

Ya if u manage to get that much pressure u either in an accident or in a crusher.

Posted by: ewang Jun 15 2007, 07:02 AM

I'm already rehearsing what I am going to say if my parents ask me what the hell that bar is back there for...

"Its for saftey Mom!!!"

Posted by: saturn Jun 15 2007, 04:46 PM

I want one.

I got a working on brackets Monday and they're about 3/5 done.

Headed to the shop to work on them some more tonight.

Posted by: CyberGecco Jun 19 2007, 09:16 PM

Lol...I don't know about tears [other than others' tears of joy to hear that the project is still moving smile.gif ] but I can personally attest to blood and sweat being shed for the project happy.gif

I thought I was done with them about a year ago.... but it has taken a little longer.
Many have been waiting since before I started this project February 01, 2006. whistle.gif

Getting clooooser...

I have the brackets 95% roughed out. another 30min on the band saw and they'll be ready for filing and grinding and sanding.

Posted by: NY2002ElantraGT Jun 21 2007, 12:10 AM

awsome....... so the list wont start untill 7/7/07? at like 12am can i PM you payment?

Posted by: gonzo777 Jun 22 2007, 12:56 PM

Exactly -- The list will begin 07.07.07.

All product, discount, payment, shipping, and group-buy details will be provided then.

This is how it's basically going to work:

We get brackets (labor/time intensive) ready.
We'll be taking partial/full payments on 07.07.07 and starting the list.
The first list will have 10 spots.
The list will be open for XX days.
The bars will be shipped/delivered within YY days after XX.

Posted by: saturn Jun 22 2007, 02:50 PM

does having the brackets separate from the bar (two pivot points) make a huge difference when compared to a 1-piece bar?

http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=202968

Theoretically I'd say it's the difference between square and parallel... but it'd take more than a simple bar to keep things square.

A solid bar would not be as easily removable though. wink.gif

Posted by: saturn Jul 2 2007, 08:14 AM

BTW I'm still in for one. will definitely help for autox... and I'd rather buy one from a club member than some random website.

Posted by: gonzo777 Jul 6 2007, 02:03 PM

According to G7 Official Time (a.k.a. E.S.T.)

It will be 07.07.07 in less than 9 hours

For the presale you can just pay $30, or if you want to pay in full you can add your $8 shipping. Since you're already a member you don't have to do anything special.
