Good for Newfoundland.
T'was run by committee (non-democratic) for 10 yrs before Confederation, which some say was a sellout by Canada and Whitehall (UK Govt)
Since joining Canada, seen as the poor bastard-cousins.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Highway Traffic Act to prohibit driving with display screens and other devices in motor vehicles, as follows:
Driving with a television, computer or other device with a display screen in the motor vehicle is prohibited if the display screen is visible to the driver. Global positioning system navigation devices, commercially-used logistical transportation tracking systems, collision avoidance systems and instrument display screens providing information regarding the status of systems of the motor vehicle are exempted from the prohibition. Drivers of ambulances, fire department vehicles and police department vehicles are also exempted. The Minister of Transportation may provide for further exemptions by regulation.

Use of such devices while the motor vehicle is off the travelled part of the road, not in motion and not impeding traffic is exempted. Drivers of ambulances, fire department vehicles and police department vehicles are exempted from the prohibitions respecting hand-held wireless communication devices, as are any drivers using the devices to contact ambulance, police or fire department emergency services. The Minister of Transportation may prohibit holding or using other devices by regulation and may provide for further exemptions by regulation.
The Bill amends the Public Vehicles Act with respect to car pool vehicles, as follows:
The definitions of "public vehicle" and "taxicab" in the Act currently exclude a car pool vehicle. These definitions are amended and the definition of "car pool vehicle" is repealed. Section 1 of the Act is amended to state that a public vehicle and a taxicab do not include a motor vehicle described as follows: with a seating capacity of 10 or less; travelling on a one-way or round trip where the taking of passengers is incidental to the driver's purpose for the trip; no fee is charged or paid for passengers' transportation except to reimburse the expenses of operating the motor vehicle; the driver does not take passengers on more than one one-way or round trip in a day; and the owner or lessee of the motor vehicle does not use more than one vehicle as a car pool vehicle, unless the owner or lessee employs most of the passengers being transported in the vehicles.

You know the age-old story... Canadians are nice folks (well, except for the ones that cut people up on buses...). Anyway... I've been thinking about it. Are we too nice? I suppose the main reason this comes about was because I was watching "So You Think You Can Dance: Canada" last night. I liked the American show (and I watch it with my gf, btw), and figured ours would be good too. Now, there's a lot of talent - but I noticed they BARELY showed any of the awful dancers. And even the ones they did, they didn't ridicule heavily like they do in the American version.
Now I do NOT think that berating people and embarassing them is necessary, but there are some people that just need to be told that they shouldn't be wasting their time. But even those people were told to leave in the nicest of ways possible. Holy hell people - you don't need to be so nice!
l love Canada, don't get me wrong. But are we too nice for our own good? You often don't notice how 'nice' we are until you see something as ridiculous as the show was last night.
BTW - this is not to say that Americans/anyone else is not 'nice'... but I don't think it's any secret that Canadians are generally thought of us the pussycats of the free world.

Any one else have any more info on this years Hyundai Sunday?

Hyundai Sunday 8/31/08 Hamilton, ON
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, so here are the tentative details:
Date: Sunday, August 31st 2008
Time: 2-6 pm
Location: Hutch's @ Confederation Park, Hamilton, ON (About 40 mins from US/NY border)
Location map:
Google Maps
I'm planning on 2-6 pm, because that way it will give time for us to wash the cars in the morning, and to actually make it there. Last year it took some of us an hour and a half to make it there from 2 cities over. Plus, 10 am is just way too early. By 4pm everyone's bored because we've been hanging out all day long. I figure at 6 we can head into downtown Hamilton and hit up Hess village, where they have all those outdoor bars. Unless of course anyone has any other ideas.
For those that are making the trip from far away, we can plan a meet up for Saturday, maybe take a cruise out to Niagara Falls, or Toronto. Then go out for food/drinks Saturday night.
Me and Jed will be moving into a new (larger) apartment, and are willing to offer FREE accomodation to anyone who needs it. Just bring us beer.
So, please post if you are interested. Tell me if you are definitely coming, or maybe coming. I'd like to get a list of at least 10 confirmed people, so that I can call up Hutch's and reserve the lot.
And of course, if anyone has any additional ideas or details, please post them up. I don't want to be the only one planning this, I would like it to be a collective effort.
And for those of you planning on coming from the US, but that are still confused about passport requirements:
NO YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO CROSS INTO OR OUT OF CANADA (until January 2009)

I've started looking for a replacement for the GT (I'm sad) so I stopped at the local Hyundai dealer to look at the Elantra (my wife needs an automatic car).... so I explain by disapointment that there is no longer a hatch offered in the Elantra, salesman tells me that the wagon (officially Elantra touring) will be coming out in September.
I don't know if it's being released in the U.S. at the same time but I do plan on checking it out, we don't plan on being a 2 car family and it's hard to give up the hatch's utility plus I like Hyundai so I will add it to the list of contenders.

So I'm thinking of picking up a sway bar (Damn you, Steve) and there are a lot of places in the states that have them cheaper than up here in Canada. Found one today with 45k miles on it for $60 + ~$30 shipping versus something in Canada with >60k miles for $105 (or so). There are other better deals, just haven't had time to call everyone yet.
Anyway - I was wondering if anyone knows if this item will get hit with a duty charge? And if so, is there any way to tell how much?
Thanks for any help!

Date : Saturday, June 7th 2008. The Motorsport Club of Ottawa offers an excellent opportunity to learn the fundamentals of high performance driving techniques. The course is held at the parking lots at the Scotiabank Place in Kanata, in an Autocross format. Our one day course offers lots of track time, supplemented by expert classroom instruction. Students learn in their own cars through a combination of in-car instruction and exercises.
An opportunity: • To learn and tune high performance driving techniques
• To prepare for MCO's High Performance Driving School
• Improve for the Summer Autocross (Solo II) Season
• To learn from experts in racing
Schedule: We're expecting you to be there at 9AM. There will be a 1 hour lunch break and we expect to finish up around 4PM.
When you arrive, we will separate you into one of three groups. There will be a team of instructors assigned to each group, so you will be receiving feedback from several instructors throughout the day.
Instruction begins with an in class session covering the rules of the school, concepts and the basic information that you will need in order to participate in the exercises. This will be followed by basic in-car exercises (skid pad, threshold breaking, figure eights etc). Break for lunch, then another theory session. The afternoon will be spent doing advanced in-car exercises (trapezoid, emergency lane changes etc). We'll finish the day running a mock Autocross course.
What you'll need: The list of things required for the school is short.
• a pair of tennis shoes (or other appropriate driving shoes)
• a helmet, Snell M2000, M2005, SA2000, SA2005 (However, loaner helmets are available at no cost)
• appropriate clothing as the school will go on rain or shine.
• driver's license and insurance
• Lunch or money for lunch
• A pen, if you want to make notes on our handout
• (Adrenaline substitutes not required)
Your Vehicle A car with a manual transmission is preferred, however automatics are allowed. Please make sure your vehicle is in sound mechanical condition. We're not concerned if the windshield is cracked, it makes a squeak or has some rust. But if the tires are almost falling off and there's a nasty metal on metal sound when you hit the brakes, you need to take care of this before the School.
Any loose trim pieces, hubcaps, floor mats should be removed. You'll have time to do this the morning of the school.
Cost The price is unbeatable for the value of the course, $75 for MCO Club Members, $100 for non-members.
Registration: Registration is opened through our
Karelo registration system. Please be aware that we are limiting it to 33 students and the school has sold out the last 4 years...so if you plan to attend, register early!
Perfect oportunity to push your car in a controlled environment with the guidance of istructors that compete with their cars.

I'm not sure if this is allowed or not - if not, feel free to lock this topic.
As most of you know I've been doing balancing and tire research for a while. Well I fell upon a little store (which ends up having three branches) in the GTA that offers excellent service and pricing! They beat just about anyone else I've been able to find.
The place is called
Consumers Tire and so far I highly recommend them. If I end up buying my tires from them I'll give more info, but when I got my tires/rims looked at today - the guy was more than helpful and did the work right (for a change).

So I really want to do this mod but am at a loss... anyone know where I can get a Tibby Sway Bar for less than the ridiculous $180 the dealer's asking for it?
I called allhyundaiisuzuparts, but they won't ship to Canada... so unless a member south of the border will accept it then forward it along to me (this seems like more hassle than it's worth) I need to find something in Canada.
Any thoughts?

I'm strongly leaning towards tinting my windows this summer even if my budget doesn't permit. I think it's very likely a worthwhile venture - even from a practical point of view.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone knew any decent places in or around the GTA that have good prices and do decent work. I know my buddy did his at Thornhill Tints, but they're fairly pricey. I've seen some ads for places that'll do it for $95, which I know is dirt cheap - do you think these places are really "THAT" awful though? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks folks!

Im thinking about moving to either BC or Alberta. I was wondering if some of you that already live there could give me some insight about these provinces.
I have an opportunity to choose between the two for a job and the jobs are the same. They havent told me which city it would be in, but the company is Bell Canada West.
So if anyone could help steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Jay.

Im currently experienceing intermittent failure of the output speed sensor on my 02 Hyundai Elantra. As I side note this seems to be a common problem on Hyundais. I phoned the local dealerhip in Kamloops and was given a price for the part (42621-39052) of $240. The list price on US OEM parts suppliers websites is generally around $80!!!!!! Problem is I can't find one that will sell parts to Canadians. What is going on here? How can Hyundai Canada justify this kind of mark-up when the same part is 1/3 the cost in the US??????

Hyundai slashes prices on Sonata, Tucson and Tiburon
Markham, Ontario - Following the announcement of a special price discount on Accent models in Quebec, Hyundai Canada has announced that it is slashing the price of the 2008 Sonata by $5,150 in other Canadian markets. The new Sonata pricing will start at $18,995.
Hyundai has also reduced the cash purchase price on other models under its Blue Ribbon Sales Event, which includes savings of $3,000 on all trim levels of the 2008 Tiburon, which now starts at $15,995, and $4,200 on the Tucson L, which now starts at $16,995.
"We wanted to provide customers outside of Quebec a specially-priced Hyundai vehicle that would be on the scale of price reductions announced earlier for the Accent in Quebec," said John Vernile, vice-president, sales and marketing, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. "We decided to extend the price reduction to the award-winning Sonata that competes in one of the largest car segments outside of Quebec."
The company said that including the Accent and Elantra, it now offers five vehicles starting below $20,000.

So my girlfriend lives in a building without visitor parking. Usually street parking is ok, but now they have up No Parking signs all over (city issued). We thought this was because they were going to clean the huge banks of snow off the curb since they were doing it in nearby areas, but so far... nothing.
So for all you Toronto folks out there, do you know any good parking areas near Avenue and Wilson? You can't park overnight on sidestreets, so I'm starting to feel out of luck. There's a school across the street. I park there sometimes - but haven't tried overnight. Do you know if this is allowed? I know some schools are talking about putting in meters - that would be great - but it's not happening until summer.
Any input?

So I was leaving my house earlier today (Saturday) around 2:00 and saw a fairly heavily modded Elantra XD GT driving Northbound on Don Mills just north of Steeles. It had tinted windows, new rims (pretty bling-bling from what I could see) and one of the most unique things I've ever seen... the back strip where the Hyundai "H" is was blue.
Just wondering if it's one of our members or if anyone knows who it may be.

Guys,
I came across my original 17 mm 2004 GT sway bar in the basement the other day. If someone local (Ottawa/Western Quebec) can use it, you're welcome to it (I'm not shipping !). It has the original bushings, but no end links. It was on the car for about 6 months, and it's been in my dry basement ever since. It's in great condition.
Anyone knows someone with a GL / GLS ? Or a spare for you? It's free.

That's right. The first inaugural Toronto Elantra Meet has been scheduled.
So detail up your ride, and get her ready to show off!
Date: Saturday October 20th
Time: 1pm
Location: Thorncliffe Mall, in front of the Zellers (Intersection of Overlea and Thorncliffe Park Drive.
Directions: Take the Don Valley Parkway to Eglington Avenue. Merge Westbound and then make an immediate left turn to Don Mills Southbound. Three lights later, make a right onto Overlea Blvd West. Travel along Overlea Blvd. until the second light (Thorncliffe Park Drive), make a left turn. Then make a right hand turn into the mall parking lot and the Zellers should be right in front of you.
Activities: Talk cars, maybe go for a cruise down some sweet streets (S. Don Mills, Pottery Road, Rosedale Valley Road for example). There's also a bowlerama and lots of good restaurants around.
