Have you had your car at least 6 months? Please let us know how it's doing. What problems if any have you had? What areas would you say are the high and low points of the Elantra?

Hey all!
I've had my Elantra GT for 7 months now, and I still get that great feeling everytime I drive it.I recently moved from Cali to Dallas and it registered 32.2 mpg on the digi counter. The only quirks I have noticed are, sometimes the "Passenger airbag off" will light up when there is someone in the seat, I did notice it only does it with my girlfriend and her daughter who are both light but weight more than the 56 lbs required for the airbag, and also sometimes the tranny seems to lag switching from 1st to 2nd, it's auto trans, I'm just about to hit the 10,000 mile mark. All in all I'm very happy with my Elantra, and I'm starting to notice more and more of them out on the streets now. thumbsup.gif

High Ponts - Smooth Ride, Great handling, even after all the rain we got in Cali last month I never felt like I wasn't "hugging" the road. The seats feel good and firm as they did 7 months ago, no signs of wear or sagging. We drove 1600 miles straight and never worried about breaking down smile.gif

Low Points - A few paint chips from the trip sad.gif , The two I mentioned above.

Purchased 2001 Elantra GT in Pewter 8/2001. Love the car... here's what's been fixed so far over the past 3 years... to my memory:

• Clicking sound in the overhead area (moon roof maybe). Mostly when hitting big bumps / holes. Had it since the beginning and even thought I've brought it in 5 times, Dealer can't find it!

• Whinning sound when AC comes on. Dealer fixed.

• Headlights and Fog Lights going out pretty often (one every 6 months or so). Dealer replaced them free and ran checks on the electrical system but found nothing wrong.

• Rear view mirror: Horrible constant rattling sound. Dealer replaced mirror.

Beyond that I'm super happy with the car!!! I did a HUGE analysis on what car to buy and the Elantra won (by far) for value / features.

Here's my car buying analysis page:

Bought my '04 hatchback last Xmas and aside from the cabin fan going out in June (replaced in 2 weeks), the trim tape around the rear doors and the clutch acting funny, it's been flawless since

02 Elantra GLS. 30,200 mls.

The only major problem i had fixed is the left front wheel bearing and that tape on the side of the door (popped out). All's been replace under warranty. They didn't do a good job on that tape thing though angry-hitselfonhead.gif it pop out again, this time on the passenger side rear door. Other than the usual howling sound that the car makes when i'm drivin on the freeway (going 80-90mph 676.gif ) the car is fine.

welcome to the club mac23, mywesael, nifty-stuff, and humanmetal!

the things you describe are all typical elantra problems and don't seem unusual! the only exception would be the front wheel bearing-- that's the first i've heard of that. it's usually the rear wheel bearings that go first.

Purchased my car on April 30th with 16 miles on it. Now it's January 29th, and I'm up to around 16,400. Oil changes every 4,000 miles. As long as I can keep it under 20k miles a year, then I'll have it paid off before my (purchased extended) 100k bumper-to-bumper warranty runs out, which suits me just fine.

Around 4k miles, the transmission started grinding horribly from 1st to 2nd at any shift point over 3k rpm. Babied it until I had a chance to get it to a dealer, at about 9.5k miles. They dropped a new transmission into it; now it shifts like greased butter.

Small rattles - one from somewhere in the driver's door, and one from what sounds like somewhere in the headliner where it meets the rear hatch... haven't gotten anyone to sit in the back at highway speeds on rougher roads to pinpoint it yet, but as soon as we get an over 60° day I'm gonna fatmat the entire mess, so hopefully that'll make it go away.

SLIGHT crinkling in the door tape. It doesn't bug me in the least. I'm not going to show my car, so meh. I can deal until it gets ugly.

I have had my 04 GT for 8 months and the only issue I had was my power steering motor broke. sad.gif The bad thing was it took two weeks to get a part and fix. mad.gif The big thing I learned is that I would not by a Sonata. thumbsdown.gif So my wife bought a Elantra GLS hatchback. thumbsup.gif

I haven't had my car for 6 months but have 6 months of driving on it and I must say I came across my first very serious disappointment with this car. After just 2 short months I alignment is off and after having it checked and the tires rotated I still have the problem. But even more irritating then that is that even the smallest amount of snow in the wheels will make the thing shake so bad my teeth rattle. What's up with that. I have never had a car do that before, at least not near the extent that this one does.
It is so bad that I spend much of my time cleaning out the wheels (which has little effect because it is in places I can't reach and the pressure washer only helps when the outside temp is reasonable) and I am seriously considering getting a beater winter car next year. Very disappointing to have to spend the time and money just to keep my car from taking me into a ditch. wacko.gif

I have had mine for just about a year now and it has over 20,000 miles so far. Up to this point the car has had no problems. I am still very happy with the car and love to drive it.
