Sounds great dude! Would doing this void the warranty? Would I need to keep putting back the stock box when I bring my car in for scheduled maint. ?

im rather new to the warranty thing when it comes to mods as this is the first new car ive owned. im keeping the stock box in the trunk, it would literally take me 1 minute to swap back with one screw driver so thats what i plan to do whenever i take it in. someone else will have to chime in but supposedly its not supposed to void your warranty, only on the part you replaced, unless they can prove the mod caused the failure. like if the air condition stops working they cant blame the filter on it, but if your motor blows up some how, i would be putting the stock box back in anyway. for regular oil changes it probably doesnt matter, i doubt they would keep track of it.

They can and will (if they want) note it on the service paperwork and it remains in the computer system. If the dealerships share data it might be available to them.

I'm looking to do this soon.
so as far as a bill of materials goes. all i need is the 3" Cone filter? no additional tubing to fit the filter in place?

if you re read the thread, you would notice that he used a piece of pipe between the rubber intake hose and the filter since the filter did not directly attach to the rubber.

...thats kind of what I was hoping for some elaboration on...
i think he mentions 3" diameter, but is that the inside dia, or outside dia, is that the spacer tube, or the filter?

I may just bite the bullet and buy a filter from partsource and fit it somehow, but just thought it would be nice to build after someone who has already been through it...

what i do for most projects i am unsure of measurements is either bring the car to the hardware place and "fit" what i need, or grab the parts and hop in a friends' car and head to the hardware place.

i used a piece of tube that came in the stock box and cut it to fit using a hacksaw. i wouldnt recommend my setup tho as the tubing starts off at the right diameter then necks down some. i was able to tighten the air filter a lot to make it work, but it would be better to have one solid piece of tubing. it really only needs to be like 6" long. not too sure on the diameter, i think its about 3" OD, but i would have to measure it.

if the rain and cold here in michigan would stop, i plan to measure it and get the right size piping at like home depot. if i do, i will update everyone here.

side note, its very simple to switch it back to stock when i go to the dealer. just a screwdriver and 30 seconds later, it can be done at a gas station if you keep the stock top lid and filter in the trunk.

Thats what I was thinking I might just end up doing... the HomeDepot/Lowes trick. Odd that when we mod our cars we go to the local hardware store that specializes in houses... haha

I wouldnt be surprised if there is a better 'lighter' plastic solution from automotive shops...

I have the same set up and I used a rubber plumbing transition pipe (3" to 2") that even came with the clamps for $9. It fits perfectly and takes all of 2 minutes to install.
