So I just read a new article where Hyundai was fined for overstating mpg for certain models, my 2013 Elantra sedan included. In the source: http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/11/03/kia-hyundai-mpg-epa/18410431/, Hyundai was quoted as saying they had reimbursed affected owners. I have never heard from Hyundai regarding this issue. how can I find out if my car is affected, and if I'm owed a reimbursement?

Not saying its Hyundai's fault or not. I actually am satisfied with my mileage. But if I'm entitled to compensation, I'd like to know.

From looking at your profile, you do not qualify. You needed to purchase your vehicle prior to the restated EPA ratings. In November of 2012, Hyundai restated their EPA ratings based on the updated calculations. If you bought before November you receive the reimbursement as when the vehicle was purchased the advertised mileage was "incorrect" but if you bought after November of 2012, they were corrected and you do not receive reimbursements. You can still check with your dealer, but since it looks like you bought the car in 2013, you would not qualify.

As far as i know it only applies to '11 and some '12 sedans. I have owned my '11 sedan since April of 2011 and have been more than happy with the mileage, at times exceeding the pre revised mileage numbers. That being said i do return every year for reimbursements even though i don't find them necessary.

I have a 2013 Elantra that I bought in 2012. Hyundai advertised it as 40 mpg highway. Hyundai has since adjusted that figure to 38 mpg. This was a result of being caught using incorrect data in their testing procedure.

Obviously, results vary depending upon speed, terrain, weather conditions, quality of fuel, cargo load, etc. I commute 98 miles one way to work. The roads are flat and mostly straight. Speed varies between 70mph ( secondary road)and 80 mph(interstate). I can acheive 38 mpg, if I drive 55mph. I don't find it usefull or safe to drive 10-20 mph below the posted speed limit. Typically, I get a range of 34-36mpg. I use the cruise control and keep the tires properly inflated.

Am I unable to achieve 40 mpg because I am a dumbass driver? Am I an even bigger dumbass, because I can't get the 38mpg either?

I receive mpg reimbursement. While it is something, it doesn't completely compensate for the difference. I am happy with the mpg that I do get, however, I would be saving a lot of money if I could get what they claimed.

Well, you answered it yourself:

Cruise control will NOT (EVER) achieve the best fuel economy. It's designed to do one thing: keep a constant speed at all times. That is detrimental to good fuel economy. We have a member from Ohio on the GRM board that has AVERAGED (yes, that is correct) over 40mpg for the last 170k miles on his '11 Elantra. AVERAGED. Think about that the next time you want to blame the car or car company.

That is a good thing to point out. I think a lot of people assume that cruise control helps improve mileage, when in fact it does the opposite.

In the past it's not been such a big deal, but with the Forte, throttle input is VERY touchy for good fuel economy. You leave it on cruise and you'll see a 3-4mpg drop compared to driving off the foot on a long trip. Our last trip to Jersey bore that out in detail.

Hey-I also agree that cruise control doesn't help improve fuel economy.
