Here's the first and only pic so far...

I'm not sure if that's a step forward or back. question.gif I'm getting a 1990's Saab vibe.

Hopefully more (and better) pics will be coming out.

I have to agree. I hope Hyundai has a rethink before they release this in early 2016. They took a step back with the new Sonata and unfortunately, it looks like they are doing the same with the Elantra. I just don't think the conservative approach works with this brand. Boring.

I have the feeling Hyundai thinks they now have the same name recognition as Toyota and Honda and by going conservative they will take sales from those two boring brands. I predict it backfires on them. Too bad they didn't consult me. cool.gif

One thing that I like is that the center stack appears to be tilted toward the driver a little bit. I've really liked the designs of the Kia layouts for this reason. The driver is the one who interfaces with these features 95%+ of the time, so they should be oriented toward that position. Furthermore, for safety's sake, everything should be accessible for the driver above anyone else. The symmetrical layout of the previous versions looks nice in a fashion shoot, and might maximize interchangeability between regions that drive on different sides, but the asymmetrical layout is more ergonomic and efficient.

That said, this is a pretty bland layout. Not that bland is bad. First, Hyundai established themselves as a quality brand with the 2001-2008 model lineup. Then, they put out some edgy and flashy designs with the 2009-2015 lineups. Now, they're reeling it back to appeal to a broader market. My mom would drive a 2006 Elantra, but she wouldn't consider a 2014 because it's too funky to her eye. Us enthusiasts want cool-looking cars, but the general public wants something vanilla that's pleasing but plain. Hyundai doesn't care about being a market leader in style or technology, they want sales. Their market segment isn't up there with the Mercedes and Lexuses, it's the Hondas and Fords.

Actually Roy (and I don't have the numbers to back this up in front of me) I believe it was the fluid sculpture design language that boosted the sales of the current Elantra and last gen Sonata.

That interior is dated.

I'm not even sure it's an upgrade over the 12+ year old XD2 gen interior design...

Other than the HVAC controls, I'd have to agree with you straight up.

And I like the XD center vents/flasher/ESC buttons better than the XD2. But I may be biased.

Funny, I was going to comment on how it looks a lot closer to the XD2 than the current gen. I don't like the look of the current Elantra's interior, but this is not the answer for me.
At least it still has a stick.

its unbelieveable that even though it is exactly the same, the leather/grey is a huge upgrade over the cloth/tan of the base models in this gen.
