Hi everyone,

I bought my new 2011 Elantra back in May and days after bringing it home I had to bring it back to the dealer because the A/C was broken. They found a line that cracked and leaked out all of the Freon. Now ever since then, the A/C works great but I find that the car loses a tremendous amount of power, like it struggles. I am not a car expert but I do know that a 4cyl car is gonna lose some type of power with the A/C on. Could something have been not put back correctly to cause this? What is everyone's opinion, other than the "take it to the dealer" suggestion. How does anyone with an '11 Elantra feel their car performs with the A/C, especially this summer?

Just like you mentioned, pretty much any 4 cylinder will drag a bit with the A/C. It shouldn't be night and day though. You also will probably see a small MPG loss as well.

although not a 2011 my 09 - when AC is on high - and I'm idling at a light, then it turns green upon accelerating I can hear the ac gain more blowing force.

I haven't experienced that, but I'll check for that now that you said that Vinnie. It just feels like with all the positives and happy owners of the new '11 model, I have not seen anyone mention A/C performance. It just feels like I got a dud, probably in my head because I got the car without working A/C.

While running the a/c does affect and slightly bog down the engine, for mines it's not really that noticable. Sometimes I'd even say I don't feel it.

What I do notice causing quite a bit of drag is a fully loading the car with 4 adults.

On a new car it definitely shouldn't struggle. But you will notice a slight loss in HP (like slower acceleration) when the a/c is on. On my 05 I do notice this, but it's not like my car is struggling to move. You should definitely take it to the dealer to have them inspect it to make sure nothing is wrong. This is why we have the greatest warranty on a car!!

hello,

I still don't have my Elantra yet, but I have a similar issue with my current Mazda 3. When i put the A/C and take off at the light it feels like i almost stall the car, almost like starting in 2nd, that's how much of a power difference i feel.

I'm really hoping this won't be an issue with my 2012. Thankfully i got it auto (..had too)

any car with A/C running the idle should differ and delivery of power is altered.. and its different on every car, an any tune on the PCM any make if altered.

I do feel it loses some power of course as you always feel it more in a smaller motor compared to a V8 for example but it shouldnt be anything to be worried about.. if you notice something very odd take it in so they can inspect the system, maybe the A/C unit itself is causing a large drain... or something to do with the belts/tensioner etc etc

I pretty much agree with everyone here. Air Conditioning will drain a fair bit of power out of the engine with any 4 cylinder. My 2005 Elantra certainly isn't happen when the Air Conditioning is on. I've never had any problems with it to think anything was wrong.

Maybe given that the new Elantra may have slightly higher HP, it's torque is down from the previous 2.0 Beta. So you may feel a significant difference. The main thing is that this is all completely normal.

GM had a great idea that when you were taking off / accelerating the air conditioning would mute for a moment before resuming. Great idea for small engines.
