ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Elantra AD/MD/UD General _ LOUD knocking/Rubbing sound from front left area (guessing tire area)

Posted by: johnny666x Aug 6 2016, 12:27 PM

Early this week my car started making a loud knocking/rubbing sound (Kind of in between when your brakes are ground down to the rotor and a knocking pattern).

FIRST, it started only when I turned slightly left or left.... NOW, it's doing it as I go straight and when I turn to the right as well... oddly enough it's not as bad when going left anymore...

Does anyone know what this could be?? And if it's an easy DIY fix..... (maybe a link on how ) and how much the part(s) might be??

Thank you very much!! Ive taken video (for sound as I drive)...but not sure if I can upload it (size limit)

First, welcome to the Club!

Second, that sounds like it's probably a wheel bearing. They can make all kinds of bad noises when they start to go bad.

Wheel bearing! The dealer just replaced the left front wheel hub and left front wheel bearing in my 2013 Elantra Limited at 21,000 miles in May 2016. All covered under warranty.

Here are a couple videos of me driving. Notice the noise change when turning wheel slight right or left.

Thanks for any help!

I assume the warranty doesnt cover it if I hit a pothole 3 years ago? I dont know if thats what it's from ...i doubt it would take 3 years to surface

anyone?

also, if it's covered under warranty.....what do i do? Call Hyundai to set up an appointment? About how long would it take? And will they charge me for the diagnosis (if they say it's NOT covered under warranty and I say I will take it some place else?)

Hey-I would take it to the dealer to have them determine/fix the problem.

Posted by: johnny666x Aug 22 2016, 04:06 PM

i was really hoping the lugnuts were just loose.....but I jacked the car up and they seemed tight.

ON THE OTHER HAND......I shook the tire at 9 and 3 as well as 12 and 6.....and there was a good amount of play in each direction . No noise....but there was play.

I also spun the wheel around while in nuetral but did not hear any noise

Also, would these things be covered under warranty? it's got 39,000+ miles on it. But Im guessing if I had hit a pothole and blew out a tire 3 years ago when I first got it....they may suspect it was that and not cover it under warranty? Do I just call them to make an appointment? And would they charge me just to look at it if they tell me it's not covered under warranty because I hit a pothole and I tell them I will take it elsewhere (or do it myself)?

"Thank you. I will try that today if I have time to go to the store and buy a jack (I cant believe they dont come with one lol).

Hopefully, whatever it is I can do myself since I dont have much $$ .

Im guessing I grab it at 3 o'cock and 9? or is it 12 and 6?

Hey-A pothole wouldn't cause a problem like you're experiencing. Do they know this happened, btw? I'd either call for an appt. or just take it to the dealer right away. It could be the sign of something serious.

no, they dont know this happened.

Somebody mentioned it possibly being a loose axle nut. Does anyone have a link or anything on how to tighten this back up? I cannot seem to find anything on it

Posted by: johnny666x Aug 23 2016, 02:14 PM

anyone know how to tighten an axel nut?? Someone suggested that.... Im not sure how to go about it. I havent seen any posts or videos

Posted by: johnny666x Aug 23 2016, 07:03 PM

I tried looking at the axle nut but i did not have a socket large enough - do you know what size it might be? I tried turning it by hand but no luck.

Here are some pic from behind the wheel to see if anything else is wrong with it...

The axle nut is probably 32mm, but it should also either have a cotter pin or be staked to the end of the shaft. I doubt it's loose. If you've got play in the wheel it's very likely a bearing and should be under warranty.

Thank you very much. I HOPE it's under warranty! smile.gif BUT Im afraid since I hit a pothole 3 years ago...they will blame it on that and not cover it. I guess I will see. Thanks again
