I noticed most of the gas stations in Colorado sell 85 or 85.5 octane gas and call it regular. I live at 6,200 feet and am wondering if the 85 or 85.5 is safe for the Elantra?

One mile high => less air compare to sea level => engine sucks in less air and thus has less compression => no knocking when using 85 octane. If you're really worried, put in 1/2 of 85 octane and 1/2 of 89 octane, but that's a waste of money in my book.

Really a waste considering all the pumps sell 87 as well:)

I would stick with 87 to be safe.

You can do it, as sspak9 says, because of the altitude. That said, I know my MD definitely gets 1-2mpg more efficiency with the higher octane (might be the intake/exhaust mods at work there?)- I always just drop the extra 3 bucks and get the 91 instead of the 85/87.

Switched to 85 after my last post. No knocking and gas mileage actually went up. Averaging about 32 mpg running about 60% highway and 40% town.

Definitely note the loss of hp compared to sea level. Lose about 3% for each 1,000 of elevation so that puts me down about 20% since our new house is at 7,000 feet.

Yeah I definitely noticed a big loss of hp after moving to VA. It really is rough when I'm carting around carload of people. Then when I get back down to sea level I feel like I'm driving a race car.

Car is finally getting good mpg's. Last 5 tanks of 85 and we averaged between 34.5 to 35 mpg. Driving consists of 75% highway and 25% city. Maybe after 23,000 miles it is broken in.

Thank you for the great news about 85 octane gasoline for higher altitudes. Suspect you have lots of elevation gains & loses at your mountainous region, which may reduce your mpg. Some of my best mpg has come at high altitudes, but on relatively level high plains.

85 octane will cause no damage & is in sync with the higher altitude. I have plans to take an extra two 5 gallon containers with me so I can reach high altitude 100% gasoline stations(no ethanol), which also pump 85 octane. I love to support stations that sell 100% gasoline & in this case, also sell 85 octane. Using 100% gasoline, I average 39mpg, with a high of 43mpg.

I do wonder tho, how low will the 85 octane perform properly. I might think, careful driving should allow 85 octane to perform OK down to what.....2000 feet?
