ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Elantra General Discussions _ What are gas prices like in your area?

Posted by: elantragt Jan 9 2005, 04:29 PM

Although gas prices have come down, the prices still seem to fluctuate wildly. What are the current prices in your area for gas?

Posted by: elantragt Jan 9 2005, 04:32 PM

Right now in the Baltimore, Maryland area we're seeing prices of around $1.75 a gallon for regular 87 octane. I was recently in W. Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio and prices seemd a bit higher in those states.

Posted by: truantics Jan 27 2005, 01:29 PM

In the Springfield, MA area it's about $1.83 for regular 87.

A few weeks ago I was driving around and I found a place that was only $1.66 a gallon. I was so excited. Imagine getting excited over the price of gas? It's ridiculous.

I hate paying so much.

Posted by: tmant Jan 27 2005, 03:21 PM

Currently $1.74. And it was almost 20 cents cheaper about 2 weeks ago. angry-hitselfonhead.gif

Looks like it will only go up now until summer.

gas is about $1.80 here in boston where i am 95% of the time, and about $2.05 in upstate NY (catskill area), where i get away the remaining 5% of the time!

Posted by: hickie13 Jan 29 2005, 02:21 PM

Its about $1.90 in Northern Illinois currently.

Kind of nice, my father owns a few convenience stores - so I always get the inside news on when fuel is about go up. (not to mention a slight discount when I go and visit) It's really amazing though how LITTLE profit fuel stations make on a gallon of gas.

prices are about 1.80 here in phoenix if anybody cares

PB is short for Pacific Beach (obvious i know, but thought I'd clarify). Yep, it's in San Diego.. About 15-20min North of downtown I guess.. Only drove down that far once.. Too crazy! lol

Posted by: gpagpa Jan 31 2005, 02:53 PM

In the Cincinnati area, yesterday I paid $2.04 for plus from Speedway, but in northeast OH, I saw it was $1.80. Its the same old story, when OPEC says they will not increase output the price climbs and stations have their finger on the increase button faster than you can blink, even though the gas they have in their underground tanks are at a lower price, but when oil decreases, they are slow as mud in cutting. Sound familiar to banks and their rates, huh, whatever favors the bank they are quick to act and anything that favors the customer, its not a priority to change. confused-scratchhead3.gif Post #2, whoo feels good to get back in the saddle.

Everyone says gas is so expensive in California, but I just saw the movie "Sideways" and the characters are in the California wine country, two hours north of LA, and in one scene you see the price of gas being $1.71. Is there really a $.50 north of LA? Here in NY you gas is probably around $2.00 or $2.05 in NYC and it's around $1.95 an hour outside the city. What's the deal?

p.s. - "Sideways" was probably filmed anywhere from a year to 18 months ago and I really don't see a reason why they would change the price just for the film. Is the story supposed to take place in the mid-90s?

Posted by: stauf Jan 31 2005, 06:13 PM

Sideways was I thought a very good film. It showcased some of the best parts of CA. Wine Country! Yes, gas is a lil cheaper up there vs. down here, but I think the main thing is realizing that it was filmed over a year ago. The film was set it in present day.

It's funny, you start here and gas is high, drive south a twidge and it's a lil cheaper, then gets more pricey. Drive north and it gets cheaper, then further north and it's pricey again.. Then again, just driving around here you can find a 20 cent difference in price. It's still pricey tho.. I'm just glad I got 35mpg on the trip, and can get around 24mpg in town.. =)

Here in SW PA, self serve regular unleaded is $1.96, at least for today. Of course, that includes the AUTOMATIC annual January 1 gasoline tax increase that our wonderful state wrote into law some years ago. Doesn't need a yearly vote by the legislature, no action by the governor required, it just happens. They say it is to improve the condition of the roads. Yeah... mad.gif

Posted by: Gelicious Mar 6 2005, 04:11 PM

As of 3-6-05 our cheapest gas in town ARCO (ethanol loaded! ewww) is 2.09 a gallon. and for Cheveron and 76 Fuel its 2.11 for 87 octane.

Ohh also Oregon is a state that DOES NOT let you pump your own gas. so they charge an extra tax on for that. IT SUCKS! I hate not pumping my own gas!

Call me nutz but for peice of mind i only put plus or premi in my ride. I know im crazy but I love knowing i got good fuel from Cheveron or 76.

Posted by: da1tank Mar 18 2005, 10:20 PM

in the tidewater area (newport news, hampton, etc.) prices can range from $1.84/gal to $2.01/gal for regular self-serve.

Well i just updated my fuel economy spreadsheet to the joy that is the impreial system.
Here are some figures in both imperial and metric, based on running 91 RON (87 octane AFAIK) petrol, i used to run 98 RON, but noticed no significant improvement so i stopped. anyway
Metric/AUs dollar:
Cost/Litre: $1.01
Avg economy: 9.4 l/100km
Best economy: 6.7
Rated economy: 8.1L/100km

Imperial/US dollar.
Cost /gallon:$2.94
Avg MPG:23.9
Best MPG:34.9
Rated MPG: 25 city, 33 highway

so yeah um u guys are paying alot less for petrol than us, damn the australian government and its stupid fuel taxes.

Posted by: TGartnale Apr 18 2005, 04:53 PM

Did you know that the imperial measurement system is diffrent than that of the US measurement system? A quart is not a quart but not a litre either. Why doesn't the whole world just go metric? Up here we have a half and half measurement system - imperial and metric. We buy a litre of gas, but build our homes with 2x4's ( which aren't 2x4 at all) Arrrrrrggggh

YES! METRIC! Why do we all have these silly differences in our measuring systems. Everything should be metric. It's so much more efficient and easy to understand that way.

In Fairbanks, Alaska at the grocery store gas stations(before store discount card), the prices are $2.23 for 87 octane. I've seen as high as $2.31 at other local gas stations. Discount cards at the local stores give a $0.03/Gal. discount, so it works out to about $2.20/Gal. 87 octane. Sad thing is, the Alaska oil pipeline runs just outside of town.

Getting about $2.05 for 87 octane in my neighborhood in Baltimore County, MD. I was driving in nearby Carroll County and gas prices were as low as $1.95 omg2.gif for regular last night. I never thought I'd say $1.95 a gallon was cheap but I was shocked at that price.

In my area of Baltimore County. MD regular is going in the mid $2.30 range. In Columbia, MD I saw regular going for $2.52 at an Exxon station. 91 octane was $2.70. thumbsdown.gif

hey guys prices in chicago are 2.49 for 87 on good days and i fill up every week some times twice, thats like $32 a fill up. it sucks and for u people in canada thats mest up.

Posted by: 2k4ElantraGT Jul 21 2005, 03:16 AM

i seen it at a place here for $2.09 today. but others rised to 2.19...lol.. only thing that sucks about the 2.09 price at that gas station is, the amount of gas it will take to drive there from here just to get cheaper gas, really isnt much of a cut... lol. so i just got 2.19.....

Posted by: princessa Aug 3 2005, 02:39 PM

try $2.65 a gal

Posted by: Cite 3 Aug 3 2005, 02:44 PM

its 2.35 for 87 here.

man i miss the days of 99 cents.. ten bucks and you were good all week.... now ten bucks BARELY pays for two days.

Posted by: princessa Aug 3 2005, 04:35 PM

I heard that! I don't remember it being under a $1.00 but than again i'm 32 yrs old

Posted by: elantragt Aug 3 2005, 04:40 PM

Hey I remember 28.9 cent a gallon gas!

Posted by: princessa Aug 3 2005, 05:38 PM

WHEN? wow you must be ollld! lol

Posted by: Devin Aug 3 2005, 05:56 PM

I remember it being around seventy-something cents a gallon when we moved to California in the mid-90s. Quite a change from the lowest station in town which is currently at $2.59.

Posted by: princessa Aug 3 2005, 06:08 PM

I've lived in southern CA all my 32 yrs and NEVER remember it being .70+ cents esp in the 1990/s

Posted by: Devin Aug 3 2005, 06:48 PM

It was seventy-something. Swear to god. Out in Agoura. Granted it was only a brief stint of seventy cent gas, but it was still under a dollar for quite awhile out here.

Posted by: elantraelite Aug 3 2005, 07:01 PM

Consider that cheap!

Downunder we're talking $1.28 a Litre = .26 of a gallon

Although this is for PULP

Posted by: Tmoney04GLS Aug 8 2005, 12:02 AM

i found gas at a chevron for 2.09 but everything else around here is 2.29-2.35 the chevron is kinda tucked away so not many people know about it.

Posted by: thunderabeGLS Aug 9 2005, 03:54 PM

I paid 2.16 the last time I put gas.

It is current 2.25 at that same station.

I use http://www.houstongasprices.com to find the cheapest prices.

The site is very useful and it was a FUEL LOGBOOK.

They are link to other cities as well if you want to check it out.

Posted by: hickie13 Aug 9 2005, 04:46 PM

Well, during my commute this morning in ChicagoLand - I saw a 2.73 a gal for regular 87 octane. BOOOOoooooooooooooooooo

Posted by: redgtxdi Aug 9 2005, 06:37 PM

How 'bout $2.46 at COSTCO!!!!!!!!!! That's THE cheapest!! Period!!

So Cal's gettin' crazy!!

In fact...........if it weren't for gas prices.......to be honest........I probably wouldn't even be at this forum pondering buying an Elantra every other day!!

The highest gas gets.........the higher the probability I'm drivin' off the lot with one is!!!!!!!!!

No bull!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: skduffy Aug 9 2005, 06:50 PM

I just filled up today north of Albany, NY 2.39 here

Posted by: shaman Aug 10 2005, 08:46 AM

118 a liter, or about $4.02 a gallon

Posted by: redgtxdi Aug 10 2005, 10:27 AM

OK...............prices just went up AGAIN!!!!!!

The local *cheap* ARCO had their regular at $2.59 still, BUT..........their DIESEL #2 was .................

$3.18 / gal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daggummit! Anybody remember when you were supposed to buy a diesel 'cuz it was cheaper?? Sheesh!!!

Anyway...............I also saw a normally *high* Mobil that has their regular listed at...............$2.79!!!!

Forget a 3rd car, I'm damn near ready to go pick up a new bicycle!!!!

I hate to say this folks.........but we've still got what, 3 weeks 'til Labor Day weekend???

I'd be very surprised if some 3.xx's don't show up by then. I think the new *floor* for gas prices is gonna be $2.50!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: princessa Aug 11 2005, 02:56 PM

I heard on the news today that gas was going to be WAYover 3.00 a gal before summer is over signs-wtf.gif

Posted by: redgtxdi Aug 12 2005, 01:00 PM

Here's what I'm wondering......................(and I think it's at least a glimmer of hope)......................

Take a look at all the new vehicles coming up...............EVERYTHING's gettin' bigger..........

Toyota FJ cruiser (Hummer knockoff)
Suburban
Tahoe
etc.etc.

Sure, some of them are incorporating limited-cylinder technology, but I can't see how that's gonna make a Suburban get anything over 20mpg (and I seriously doubt that even!!)

So......what are the automakers gonna do when Americans leave ALL of those vehicles on their dealer's lots 'cuz they don't want to buy 'em????

My "glimmer of hope" part comes in here where at least all the automakers will be in the same boat as us auto *owners* 'cuz what are we all gonna do together to get thru this crap????

Example...........when I was at the Toyota dealership (and I think we can agree Toyota knows how to make quality engines), the Tacomas were far & few in between........(especially 4 cylinders!!!!!).........but the Tundras were ALL OVER the lot!!!

Is this a sign of things to come??? What about the Santa Fe??? That things a bit of a gas hog already. Oh, and the XG350 is going away for that new full-size.

Are automakers gonna go bankrupt with this gas crap?????????????

Posted by: Bobzilla Aug 12 2005, 01:10 PM

Even with gas prices high, americans are still buying bigger and bigger. They wouldn't make it if it wasn't going to sell. People will just be bitchin' a little more and you'll see more threads like this:

Hello all, I have a 1999 F350 V10, lifted with 44's and 5.12 gears and am only getting 4 mpg. How can I get better.

Posted by: cardassian-cruiser Aug 15 2005, 08:12 PM

($3.86 US gallon)

I coasted home, real slow, today.

As for the cheaper diesel . . . . .

In the old days before emissions came in and bit everyone in the but diesel fuel was made from the waste cast of in the production of gasoline. Someone( Ferdinand Diesel? Have to check up on that) Came up with an engine to use that fuel. Hence the compression engine. Well, the EPA stepped in about 5 years ago and determined that we should use a different blend and make them low sulphur which meant more work has to be done to refine the new fuels. Is it worth the extra money? Probably not but it sure gives them a good excuse to charge more.

As for the "Displacement on Demand" with GM the new Impala SS with the 5.3L 303hp V8 gets better highway economy than the 3.9L V6 at 29mpg. Considering the size and weight of that car and it gets within 3-4mpg of our elantras witht 303 hp is amazing.

That'd be a cool mod. My grandfather had a CNG car once and really enjoyed it, except for the lack of filling stations. He also really liked his propane Cadillac. He's always into the new technologies, although surprisingly he hasn't bought a hybrid. Yet.

There's a gas station in the next town over from mine that's $3.09 for regular. My parents have been avoiding driving their Jag like the plague because it guzzles premium and that costs us $3.05 at the cheapest place around.

Posted by: Vampyrate Mar 20 2006, 01:14 AM

this is something that was waiting on... every spring/summer since i have been driving, i have noticed this trend in seasonal flucuations. because the weather is warmer, more people with convertibles and motorcycles are out just driving for the shear hell of it and not having any real destination, pretty much wasting gas. and since its spring break and coming up on summer vacations, all those people with RVs, SUVs, and Trucks and fairly larger more guzzling vehicles, gas consumption is up and the oil companies are trying to make up for whatever "profit" they may have lost during the winter (though they make close to like 100 billion a year regardless.

The oil cabal wants to makes as much off us consumers before the bottom drops out (...peak oil), so get used to higher prices. Fluctuations will happen and seemingly the price may drop with the season but the overall picture is one of increase without end. Note to self: invest in energy funds for the short-mid term...

Problem is is in extraction. You've plenty of oil per se, but so much of it is in sand and shale and of lower quality that the cost to extract exceeds that of the middle east and other trad oil fields.

What Peter Noone dies because of oil extraction?

No, but your land dies and possibly indirectly it could be argued do you.

At any rate, the costs associated in sand extraction are of a much higher net loss than are those associated with traditional fields. Imagine giant craters in the ground and huge ass earth moving equipment charging up and down the Canadian wilderness and then the loverly 'repairs' to the damage. Something to consider regardless of the current situation in the middle east.

Oh the human costs, those are the responsibility of the despots involved (of which Bush could be considered in some circles) and they don't see these losses, hell they don't care if your son/daughter/brother/sister/father/mother is killed either it seems, as long as the resistance is crushed!

I remember where I could fill a 24 gallon tank with 16 bucks.

$3.41 at the same station...

But anyway...it's one of the reasons I'm looking at the Elantra. The 14.5-gallon tank is a great money saver. thumbsup.gif I would have looked at the Accent but (1) it wasn't available in a hatchback and (2) NO CRUISE CONTROL! thumbsdown.gif

Your example is not really what I would consider apples to apples. I visit Europe regularly on business. Yes you are correct by stating the per litre price is higher in the UK than in the States,... but I must point out that I typically see the grades of Petro in Europe are higher. For example, in the Netherlands the minimum octane rating is 91, were as in the USA we are gypped with a minimum of octane rating of 87, (darn tree-huggers).

Now, you take the US dollar price of "Super Premium", which technically would be the equivalent, and do the Imperial verses Metric conversions, then do the currency conversions, (1 Euro = 1.27189 USD), the prices are almost the same.

And since we are all car nuts, we all understand the efficiency and performance that goes along with those 2 numbers. angry-bangheadonwall.gif

This morning by my house, fuel was at $3.08 per regular 87 octane gallon.

I paid $2.739 per gallon this afternoon while filling up my wife's Taurus, but that was with $.10 per gallon discount with $100 of groceries at Kroger. So, the going price around here is a little over $2.80/gal for regular.

I'm glad I've started getting better mileage; since I got the car my average has been 26.5 mpg, and my normal commute is typically a little worse than that, but lately I've been getting 28-29 mpg in mixed driving (AT). I hope the car is finally broken in and this trend will continue!

My Elantra seems to mostly hang around the 8.1 - 8.8 litres per 100km combine with city and highway driving. Average 8.4 litres or 28mpg

A full highway cycle I get down to as little as 6.4 litre per 100km or 36.7mpg

Agreed. In mid November something will come out and say that home heating oil costs are increasing (or something) because of a colder-than-expected winter, even if it's normal climate-wise.
