For my money the 5 speed definitely is more fun to drive but the automatic tranny on our cars is a good one.

Love the manual, as mitch said very fun to drive, and thats a little odd for a car at this price...
I've never had the opportunity to drive an Auto, but im not planning on buy Auto for a while, at the moment i enjoy having more control over gear shifts and outright acceleration... ive never test driven the Elantra in auto yet either. And when choosing to buy the Elantra, i was mostly looking for power and good acceleration. I'm stuck with the auto, but I'd give it up any day of the week.

I dislike automatics. They shift when THEY want, not when YOU want. I have never owned or even driven an auto (and in over 42 years of driving that includes many) that let me use the engines power curve to best advantage. They either downshift and send the rev's screaming uselessly when you apply a bit of throttle, or they upshift and bog down just as you really need the rev's to finish that maneuver you are making (like passing). Don't even talk about how they behave in the mountains and in snow! As for traffic; our first gear is a real "creeper" and you simply have to learn to keep a bit of space between you and all the "stop and go" auto drivers around you to stay off the clutch. Keep in mind, I live on LI and the term "traffic" has real meaning around here.

Mtlelantra..get someone to teach her. Don't try to teach her yourself. That is NEVER conducive to marital relationships!

She's not willing to learn since we've moved here to Montreal where there's a high percentage of crazy drivers... I'm sure she could learn, but she doesn't want to... she knows she'll stall the thing under pressure, which is quite often here... I'm a pretty confident driver, but I've been scared sh*tless a few times by the agressiveness here... Oh well, once my 89 Civic bites it, the next car will be manual, and MINE ALONE!!!! -------------------- 2004 Hyundai Elantra VE 2.slow

LOL Trust me I know that, i made the mistake of teaching my wife and we were not on the best of terms for while but now that I see that she actually took my teaching seriously, she is a good 5 speed driver... im not sure how someone else would have taught her....but after the fact im glad I was the one... Sounds like your gunna get a car that is all yours well thats great! remember its always good to have your spouse know how to drive "YouR" car, just in case of an emergency! Just my 2 cents.... -------------------- Lead, Follow, Or get out of the way!

HAHa..... I drive an auto becaus my dad is planning to pass down the car from me to my sister...... Auto isn't that bad if you know how to use it Lately i purposely force the auto to do wat i want and i think it might be learning *wink*.......J/K, but when i want it to down shift i briefly let go of the accelerator and put it back down again. Most of the time if your on the edge of a gear change you can jump down and continue accelerating. I don't konw if this is bad or not but everybody said there was nothing wrong.... Same if you need to pass real fast......My car likes to scream into the upper rpm's when i accelerate real fast, but if i release teh accelerator i get the rpm's to drop and continue to accelerate....(maybe not as fast though, but it works)

Well, I have an auto and love it. For starters my wife can not drive a stick (yea, I know, already been discussed) and for driving in traffic, auto's rule. If this were a car I drove only occasionaly, then a stick would be fine. Sticks are fun, auto's are practical IMO.

I have the auto because that is required for the use of hand controls.
