WSJ reports that Ford will ditch the retro Mustang styling and restyle it to appeal to younger audiences.

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20120416/CARNEWS/120419878

The end result won't look exactly like this, but if I were Ford, I'd just keep pumping out the current design, even in lower quantities, and name this new car something else. I like it, but it's not a Mustang.

Just like this POS wasn't a Mustang (and, hopefully for Ford, no one ever pictures this when they think of Mustang):

I like the rendition but Yeah! It's not a Mustang. I know a bunch of Mustang fanatics and would be surprised if any would approve of this.

Hey-this proposal reminds me of the Probe, which was considered as a Mustang replacement.

Definitely not a mustang. But only the old school mustangs till the late 70s are really mustangs.

Well, the reason the Probe was the Probe and not the 3rd Gen Mustang is because it was FWD and based on a Japanese chassis. I would hope this wouldn't be FWD.

Hahha those side mirrors are ridiculous.

I like it, but I agree, not a mustang. Add slightly larger headlights and keep the stang tail lights and I could see it happen

Hey-also, Ford got a ton of complaints about replacing the Mustang with a FWD vehicle, so they designed a new car around a RWD platform instead.

Definitely shouldn't be the new Mustang. That's a great looking car, but it has no characterists of a Stang.

I love the way that looks though. Sort of Aston Martin-ish.

what's wrong with the Fox Body? They are the epitomy of mustangs for everyone I know. Maybe you were thinking of the Mustang II?What you pictured was very much a Mustang.

Not just any Japanese chassis: it was a re-bodied Mazda MX-6.

There's precedent for Ford replacing a RWD car with a FWD car... just look to the Escort. Of course, I think I wouldn't mind having a Euro-version Escort... one with a 3-liter Cosworth in it. drooling.gif omg2.gif

I'm with Bob, the Fox body is a Mustang. They were pretty nice if you fixed them up.
I liked the later ('86-94?) models better than the earlier models.
Heck, the Fox body is when the 5.0 came out, isn't it?

As for the illustration, looks more like a Hyundai/Kia design.
