I intalled a short intake system on my 04 Hatchback. I put the mass airflow sensor just next to the filter and now there is a very loud hum when the motor is running at idle.
some of the pictures of intake systems seem to have the mass airflow unit removed.

Any Suggestions?

I REALLY hope you are joking. REALLY hope. DO NOT listen to this erroneous advice.

To get rid of the noise you need ot run the stock elbow off the throttle body to the MAF, then you need to hook a bracket up to hold it in place . The MAF is a critical part in making the engine run correctly as it measures the amount of air flowing into the cylinder so the ECU can determine how much fuel to add to make the combustion cycle complete and correct. DO NOT listen to this erroneous advice.

2001-2003 Elantra's used a MAP based ECU and did not have a MAF in the intake. 2004-up do. This is why you see some pics with, and some without. The rest of the engine bay looks identical to the common observer. The educated will see small differences like the CVVT solenoid on the head, the different style exhaust manifold and the obvious MAF sensor.

Wow... I am just amazed. All the stickies, the information available on this site free for the taking and we get advice to just "take off" a critical engine piece. omg2.gif

scubastave... that's not good advice at all. signs-groan.gif .

I doubt anyone removed their MAF, Elantrick. Most likely you were looking at pics of the 2001-2003's.. they use a MAP.

I have read posts of people who didn't know any better completely remove the maf or just leave it dangling and complain that they now have a CEL caused by the intake.

It amazes me that people can think they can just leave things off their engine and think it'll be fine...

OK, I know the MAF needs to be there, but I was confused by the pictures.
So is it the MAF that is making the noise?

tHE Stock elbow has a resonator to keep that noise down to a moderate level. When you replace it with a solid pipe that doesnt have that the resonance through that sensor resonates through the metal elbow making that hum.

The nice thing, is that little reosnator box on the elbow does not create a restriction, SO leaving it in place doesn't hurt anything.

Been away for a while.
I have updated my 04 Hatch with 17" wheels, 215/40-17 Nitto N gen tires, the air intake, and HID lamps.
I am desperately trying to keep my car cooler than my son's all black 2001 Escort ZX3

I think you popped by like a year ago and I think I PM'ed you, but got no response. Why did you leave anyway?

Glad you're back also.

OK, I put the stock elbow with the plenum chamber back on instead of the aluminum tube. The hum is gone! I am having hard time believing this fixed it.
Thanks guys.
