On the Elantra... (Daft Punk doesn't play often in our house lol)

Pulled out the Meguire's polishing kit and worked those babies over good! They really needed it and honestly they'll need it again in 6 months I'm sure because it's tough to remove the top layer, I'll need to try 800 grit to start next time. I also washed and vacuumed out the poor thing, man women are tough on cars!

No pics tho because my phone has been dead all week (going for replacement in a few hours - that's another thread).

Dave... no digital camera or anything? For something like this, before and after would have rocked.

I will second the "women are tough on cars" statement. It is amazing what I find in my wife's car when I clean it. Granted she runs our 3 kids plus friends all around town so I don't blame her, but there normally is a suitcase worth of clothes, a giant bag of paper, a couple pairs of shoes and food crumbs in every crevice that comes out of her car each time it's cleaned! laugh.gif

My ex used to use the door pockets as a garbage bin. Really ticked me off.

I have to agree. I don't trash my car or really leave stuff in it. But friends of mine leave so much junk and trash in their cars. Lots of clothes and things like that.

And why do you keep your car clean again?

For Mitch:

After much elbow grease:

Although this is an 'After' shot, from this angle (top) it really looks like I've little to show for my efforts, and this side was worse than the other. Essentially this was how they both looked when viewed straight on!

And now the Driver's side:

Top shot shows the work that still needs to be done to make them really standout:

Also, I should do this more often... wink, wink lol

looks good. get yourself one of those headlight restoration kits with the foam pad attachment for a drill, a slow drill (600-1000 rpm), a tube of plain Crest toothpaste, a tub of Turtle wax polishing compound with scratch remover. mix a 50/50 blend of toothpaste and compound, about a silver dollars worth, soak the foam pad in water and apply the mixture to the pad, place pad centered on the headlight and begin buffing the compound in to the headlight. polish for about 3-5 minutes. DO NOT let the foam pad run dry, dip it in water every 30 seconds or so and try not to remove too much compound with the water until polishing is complete. wipe clear with water. It is very difficult to damage the headlight with this super light abrasive compound, i would imagine its somewhere around a 3000-5000 grit. only way you could do damage is polishing without water, or letting the pad run dry.

doing this will remove the remaining damaged UV protecting clear coat, so you will have to apply a nice carnuba wax to the headlight every 3 months and re-polish once a year. or you can buy a UV protection kit which comes with a proprietary UV clear spray, and a UV light setup that you will need to cure the UV spray. that kit is about 75-100 bucks for the spray and you will need a UV light kit, i think they guarantee 1 year protection... but there are many of these kits emerging in recent years. good luck.

Thanks! I think if I can remove all of the top layer that is damaged and then get some film reasonably (cut to fit myself) that may be what I do in a few months. I saw some restore kits with UV spray for around $40 and they claimed either UV light or the big ball in the sky would do the trick ;-)
