Have you thought about using something like this? ($30 cargo liner) I have that one in grey, and it's great. Very easy to trim down to size. It was one of the first things I bought, because I guarantee something like this is going to happen to me, it's just a question of when

I had looked at covers but didn't see that one. The Hyundai one was so expensive so I kinda left it. I do have a "sort of" covering already but it's not a complete covering.

In the case of this stain, though, that covering wouldn't have helped much since the stain was mostly on the side, not the floor.

That's true. You can cut the mat too large, leaving an extra section on each side to curl up and make kind of a "basin," but yeah, that still wouldn't protect more than an inch or two of the side. (Also, it can look ugly, depending on your trunk shape I guess -- I tried it, but ended up taking the mat out and cutting off the extra pieces so it lays flat).
