ElantraClub - For Elantra Owners and Enthusiasts _ Group Buys _ Air Dam Group Buy

Posted by: gonzo777 Aug 8 2005, 04:19 PM

We've had a few punctured condensers and this will probably be some cheap insurance (compared to the $600 repair bill) against that happening to you!

Details:

I wrote up http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id488.html but some folks can't find the mesh and I've been asked to do a 'group buy'. There's no need for a minimum # of participants so it doesn't really follow the normal GB idea.

Kits will be pre-cut plastic or aluminum mesh (as specified in the option)and include zip ties(I have white, black, dark red, and blue ties). Price includes shipping to US usaflag.gif and Canada canadaflag.gif!! (I can look into shipping anywhere else.)

Grille pieces do NOT replace the stock grille - they're just added protection.

Pricing Disclaimer:
I readily admit that it would cost you a lot less to go to the store and get mesh and do this yourself, especially since my fellow Americans will be helping cover the shipping cost differences for any Canadian members.

update2.gif
New options added 08/10!! 2 new kit options, 1 material option. My parts source just added aluminum mesh. It's thin galvanized aluminum - natural aluminum color and shiny at the moment but will most likely dull over time.
update2.gif

Options: (prices in $US)
1a) 01-03 GT Air Dam --- $7
1b) 01-03 GT Air Dam + grille --- $8

2a) 01-03 GLS Air Dam --- $7
2b) 01-03 GLS Air Dam + grille --- $8

3a) 04-05 GT/GLS Air Dam and fogs --- $7
3b) 04-05 GT/GLS Air Dam and fogs + grille --- $8
3c) 04-05 GT/GLS Air Dam NO fogs --- $6
3d) 04-05 GT/GLS Air Dam NO fogs + grille --- $7

4) 10' of uncut mesh --- $6

You may add additional kits to your order for 1/2 price.
You may 'upgrade' to aluminum mesh for $2 more per kit.

Examples:
-- 1a shipped to Oregon = $7
-- 2b shipped to Toronto = $8
-- 3b+3b shipped to Cleveland = $12
-- 3c+upgrade shipped to Chicago = $8

Payment:
PayPal -- lydiasdad@yahoo.com (Sorry, no Credit or Debit card payments though.)

Please include your handle, car color, name, address, and what option(s) you want.

No PayPal? PM me -- I'll take a Money Order.

Kinda off topic, but is the stuff you bought aluminum or plastic? I can only find metal, and it is silver. Lookd at Ace, Lowes, and Home Depot.

Posted by: elantragt Aug 8 2005, 04:51 PM

Pretty sure it's the same stuff on my car and it's a black, flexible plastic. I also couldn't find it locally and had to order it online. I love it. Really easy to work with and does the job.

Gonzo is the guy who started the trend on his lower grill and I was the one who went one step further in "copying" him and added it to the upper grille too. thumbsup.gif

Posted by: Roydjt Aug 8 2005, 04:51 PM

It's plastic mesh. Metal will work as well, it's just a little trickier to deal with. I had no luck finding it at Home Depot, but Lowe's had it. I did it to my lower and upper grilles, and I am very pleased with the results!

you've gotta be kidding when you say this is expensive. $8 shipped???!! anywhere??!! wacko.gif who in the world wouldn't think that's a bargain??? question.gif

i'm happy to help subsidize shipping to my neighbors across the border if it means me getting insurance against another punctured condensor for $8. plus, it looks cool. innocent.gif

just one question-- i think you should be able to receive paypal payments regardless of how the sender tells paypal to withdraw funds. i.e., i should be able to paypal anyone with a paypal account, drawing on my bank account or credit card.

i'll send you a PM...

The info I see on PayPal's page says that I can't take credit or debit cards ... but withdrawals from bank accounts should be okay.

I'll update my first post.

Count me in for 3b please! I'll sort out the moolah tomorrow, too tired right now. Thanks for gettin' this together Gonzo! thumbsup.gif

Posted by: LJWcrash Aug 9 2005, 01:40 AM

I'm in for two of the 3b's. With the way our roads always are around here, it's only a matter of time until this will save a lot of heartache.

Thanks for thinking of us!

Posted by: Bigs Aug 9 2005, 06:34 AM

Gonzo,

Expensive? Even for me in canadaflag.gif coin it's well worth it! You know why? No one has to bend down, take mesurements or just go under and cut to size. It's all done for us. That's a deal IMO. thumbsup.gif

The mesh is black right?

On a second note. Count me in for:

3b) 04-05 GT/GLS Air Dam and fogs + grille --- $8

Gonzo, again, thanks for putting this together! thumbsup.gif

That's what I think also. A guy here at work says it shouldn't matter what method I use since I'm sending you cash! I know you said it was a personal accout but that shouldn't make a difference.

I'm quite reluctant in inputing my bank info online.

QUOTE (PayPal)
Can Personal accounts receive credit or debit card payments?

No. In order to reduce the cost of processing expensive credit card transactions associated with accounts that do not pay fees, the ability to receive credit or debit card payments is reserved for Premier and Business accounts.

Any credit or debit card payment will be held as "Unclaimed" until the recipient accepts it by upgrading to a Business or Premier account, or denies it (if payment is denied, the funds will be returned to the sender's PayPal account).

Personal accounts may still accept non-credit or debit card funded payments though limits will apply to certain payment types.

To set up a PayPal account yo have to give them your bank info. They make two small deposits and you use those ammounts to verify the account ... at least that was the way it was when I set mine up.

I'll take an International money order in US funds though.

Posted by: Bigs Aug 9 2005, 12:51 PM

I just sent you the payment Gonzo! Hope it came out OK!

NEW OPTIONS Added!! Check the first post.

It was brought to my attention by thunderabeGLS that at least some '05 GLS models don't have open fog surrounds so I added 2 new options there.

I also found some aluminum mesh in roll form. Details in the first post.

All members that have already placed orders will be contacted.

Personally I prefer the plastic as it's easier to deal with and will probably hold up better over time.

You could always take out the covers that are in there, but mine are open and there's still a plastic trim piece:

Posted by: Cite 3 Aug 11 2005, 07:34 AM

where'd ya get such nice neat little arrows.. lol

has anyone painted theirs yet?

i need to get new pics... such a gem of a find .. this gutter mesh stuff.. lol

Posted by: RHINESEL Aug 11 2005, 10:53 PM

This questions may have a simple answer but...

Are those plastic trim pieces easy to take off? I haven't changed my oil yet so I havn't had a roll under the car to check everything out. I like the open look alot more.

And if so.. Are the pieces cut for the black trim on your car by the foglights or is it one full piece of mesh?

Finally (I hope) are the blue zip ties light blue or dark? I have Moonlit Blue and I'll need to decide between blue and black.

Thanks.

Posted by: RHINESEL Aug 11 2005, 10:58 PM

Oh yeah, one more thing.

Would it be possible to get a pic of the aluminum? I wonder if it would look good with the chrome fog light surrounds...

I make separate pieces for the fog areas and the center. They overlap and get zip-tied together behind the plastic trim piece.

Your question is a bit confusing but I'll answer it as best I can.

The "biggest" 04-05 package (3b) consists of 4 pieces.

1 piece for the left fog, 1 for the right, and one for the air dam as seen here:

The "grille" piece goes behind the stock grille just as an extra measure against any small rocks or whatnot that might want to try to get in there.

Does that answer your question?

I got the kit today and installed it this evening once it got cooler. It looks awesome! I'm going to go down and grab a couple of those sticky zip tie mounts for the upper center of the air dam mesh strip, would I be able to find the mounts at my local Do-It Centre or do I need to go to a specialty shop of some sort?

Anyways, here are some pics:

It's hard to see the mesh in the grill in those pics so I'll try to get a close-up tomorrow when it's light out.

Posted by: southpawboston Aug 16 2005, 06:12 AM

you can get the zip tie mounts at any hardware store, probably in the fastener section. i know that home depot has them.

EDIT: hey gonzo, i received mine last night!! thanks!!! can't wait to put it on this weekend!

Thank you for making the kit and coordinating everything! It was a very easy installation, especially with the instructions from the DIY. Glad you talked me into the black plastic instead of the aluminum, I think on the black GT it looks better. Probably on the GLS with the chrome pieces the aluminum would pretty good though.

I'm just going to get a couple stickies for piece of mind, if they pop off I might glue them back on though - would that be a wise thing to do?

Posted by: Cite 3 Aug 16 2005, 11:06 AM

or you could drill a hole and use a zip tie .

on the 02's theres tons of holes for zip ties.

There are two bars on the 05 that I could attach it to but the top half of the mesh would be bent backwards toward it and I want it to be up front. I'm not too hot on drilling holes, but compared to glue it may be the way to go. Anyways, that's later on down the road. Right now I'm going to try out the sticky zip tie mounts and see how they do. Thanks for the suggestion, Cite.

OK....my mesh kit arrived today. So, since it didn't rain (despite looking like it would) this afternoon I installed the mesh kit. I did a bit of trimming on the ends of the air dam mesh so that it fit nicely in place using the black ties. I didn't use any ties at all for the actual grill. I removed the two 10mm nuts and the six phillips head screws that hold to grill to the brackets on the hood. I was able to slip the mesh holes over the plastic projections that the screws go into and did a small bit of trimming on the edges. I screwed it all back on, and it looks great.

I think it will definitely help protect the radiator and condenser core. And, while you really can't see it too much since my car is black, when you do see it, it looks really nice. Applause to gonzo777 for his initiative and effort in making up these kits!

i think the idea was that US and canadian members would pay the same price for the mesh, shipped. i think gonzo takes a loss for the canadians but created a price structure such that US buyers defray that loss. this way everyone pays the same price (quite reasonable), and the canadians don't have to pay more than it's worth to get it shipped to them.

and by the way, i'm LOVING having that mesh protecting my A/C condensor and radiator. it's totally stealth, and a snap (literally) to install. this should be on every XD owner's mod list!

I didn't plan on making a bunch of money on this. I figured the prices to mostly cover expenses and then share what was left.

My average cost per shipment was $5.52, which of course does not include the time to get materials, cut the kits, box things up, and ship them out.

Of the "profit", some has been paid directly to Mitch (including some extra contributions that were made wink.gif ) and some will go toward future contest prizes.

Bigs has been the only Canadian who has participated thus far, and honestly, it didn't cost any more to ship his. The only difference was that I had to go to the post office to ship it instead of going through the mailroom at work.

Like I mentioned though, until I decide to call it quits this is an open-ended opportunity.

I'm glad everyone has been happy with them. smile.gif

Well I was sick in bed most of yesterday but it got out today.

In an attempt to make up for the delay I threw in an extra kit in aluminum mesh.

hey, quick question. i tried putting the mesh on the lower air dam. it wasnt a perfect fit. is that to be expected? im nervous about trimming it i dont wanna fuck it up, but after i removed the stock plastic, it was wider and the angles on the ends didnt match. let me know cuz i'll make a template of my stock piece and cut it if i have to. Just wasnt sure if anyone else had the same problem.

Posted by: n0c Nov 3 2005, 09:11 PM

^^My mesh is not perfect but that's because I am lazy lol. I just wanted protection so I left it like that. It's slanted and a little crumpled (because the zip ties are pulling on it) but it's not noticeable unless you look real carefully.

By the way, if you need more mesh, you can find them at Metropolitan Lumber Harware store.

What kind of mesh did you use? I used glavanized metal intended for gutter guards and it works great and doesn't deform. It's really cheap, too- less than $5 worth does the whole air dam and grill area. I talked about how I did my mesh http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4688&hl=.

Removed what plastic? Everything should go BEHIND the bumper cover and you shouldn't need to remove anything.

Did you go by the DIY??

Well, 3b is a 4-piece kit. 1 for each fog area, one for the center air dam, and a piece for behind the grille.

I have fog lights installed on my car, the mesh goes behind the fog lights? Does it protect them?

I have a Tidal Wave Blue color on my 05 Sedan Gt, go ahead and put me down for one. What do I owe you for the 3b?

Thanks.

It's going on as long as I feel like doing it. At that point I'll probably offer to pass my templates on to someone else who wants to do it.

Topic closed in order to promote fair advertising. These kits cost me about $5 in materials, box, and shipping so there wasn't much profit to share - but the club did get some and I do intend to donate some prizes once the contests get rolling again.

Yes, prices went up on a couple items, but if you've already paid OR you expressed interest or intent in THIS topic, then you get the prices listed in THIS topic.

Thanks everyone!
