Well for the first time since she's owned it, I've finally done a pretty thorough detail of my wife's 2006 Santa Fe GLS with the 3.5L engine. It was a prodcutive holiday weekend as I also detailed my Sonata too (see other topic). Enjoy the pics of the wifey's car. She won't have it much longer as we're looking at replacing it with something that can accomodate 3 car seats. What a shame because the blue really sparkles in the sun. I didn't even have time to wax it, but it still looks great!

Ok, it's not that new, we've known they make the Equus for a while for the Korean market and it wasn't very handsome or particularly powerful... but now it's being redone with the Genesis style:
It's "7 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and has a wheelbase nearly 4.5 inches longer," than the Genesis. The Genesis rear seat is already very roomy so... where do another 4.5" go?
Price (in Korea) $93,000.

Ok, so I found out this past week that my wife is expecting. Its still very early on in the pregnancy, but with it being our 3rd (all still in car seats too) we have started looking at a bigger car. I most likely will keep my Sonata, but we want something that we will use when we all go out together. Unfortunately I think its minivan time! I went to my dealership tonight to look at a couple options Veracruz, Santa Fe with 3rd Row and the Entourage. I crossed out the Veracruz as the limited (which is all they have right now) is out of our price range and from what I've seen online there are few if any GLS' around. The Sante Fe is definitely off the list as there is absolutely no cargo room with the 3rd row seat up, plus access to the 3rd row isn't something I'd want to be dealing with daily. That gets me to exactly where I thought I was going to get to, in that a minivan makes the most sense. Well they had one remaining 2008 Entourage left. It is a Limited model with the rear DVD entertainment package. It has leather, push button sliding side doors, automatic lift gate, etc. Basically it is loaded. It is Cranberry red with the beige leather interior. So here's the kicker, the van was used as a demo and has a little over 10,000 miles on it. I priced the van on Edmunds with the same options and the MSRP is $33,500 and the "what others are paying is $30,500. Currently there is 4,000 plus an additional 1,000 owner loyalty rebate offered by Hyundai, which would bring the what others are paying price down to 25,500. So with the way the market is right now, the fact the van has 10,000 miles on it as a demo, what do you think you would try to get the price to? I should also note that I've purchased 4 vehicles from this dealer in the past 6 years. In addition we will be trading in my wifes 2006 Santa Fe which has about 34,000 miles on it. We owe 11,800 and Edmunds puts the trade in value around 11,100 which actually seems higher than I was expecting.
So say I walk in there with the Edmunds print outs and say, I'll give you 21,000 for the Van and I want a trade in equal to the payoff amount for my Santa Fe, do you think I'll get thrown out?
What would you try to get the price too? I really have no idea what I'd want to get the price too.

Leftover 2008 Hyundai Tiburon GT. The Elantra as almost 100,000 miles and while still running good was showing its age. The GT stickered for a little over 22K but we picked it up for $15.5 before taxes and tags. The car has leather, automatic climate control and a tiptronic transmission. The wife loves it so far as it will be her daily. I will continue to putt around in my Accent. I will post some pics of it tomorrow.

Well, this year had a lot more Tibs and twice as many Elantras!
They had a 3.8 Genesis there and an EVO X. Must say that i prefer the EVO based on cockpit feel.
Last year it was just me and Only1db, this year had both of us plus Slipknot and another from Miami (can't remember his name right now)
(left-right: Slipknot, Only1db, Silentwolf, Miami member)
Now for Tibs, Tibs, and more Tibs
Blue one with the scissor doors was a bit much IMO.
The one on the right was my favorite.
I was unable to stay for the awards as i had to go to work. But Andy did toss in a Best Elantra category for us since a couple of us show up to meets regularly. I won it, but Only1db had to accept it for me.

If I was a Hyundai marketing exec, I would've brought over the i30 hatch to replace the Elantra GT hatch not the wagon... oh well they didn't listen to me. The new, smaller, more fuel efficient i20 looks very promising and I hope they consider this to replace the aging Accent.

Ok so I currently own an 03 Elantra with around 45k on it. I have owned the car without having really any problems with it and I don't really see a need to get rid of the car but a close friend of my family has an 06 Tiburon GS 4cyl 5spd with 35k that needs some cosmetic work and stuff like that. They have offered it to me for $7500. What do you all think would be the right move? Jump on it and don't look back? I would lose my moon roof and I would get a 5spd in place of my current automatic transmission. The previous owner had installed aftermarket 17" rims with Toyo tires and a SRI. I believe that all original rims and parts are included with the car. Thoughts on what I should do? Is this as good of a deal as I think it is?

This is pretty interesting i20 news courtesy of Autocar UK:
QUOTE
A hot diesel version of the new Hyundai i20 hatchback could make it into production.
The performance-orientated i20 would be the Korean maker's first step into the modern hot hatch market, but an i20 'GTI' could still fit into the range provided it stuck to the Hyundai budget philosophy.
"It's on the cards, and would be a boost to brand image in the UK," a product development insider told Autocar, although he added that no firm decision had been reached.
The warmed-over version of the i20 would use Hyundai's 1.6-litre diesel engine, which won't be offered otherwise in Britain. With the boost turned up, this unit could offer around 200bhp.
However, it will be vital for Hyundai to keep fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as low as possible if the proposal is to reach showrooms.
Autocar understands that the company would like to offer a warm performance hatch with sub-120g/km CO2 emissions, and aim it at younger buyers. It would be a direct and potentially cheaper rival for the Skoda Fabia vRS, and could start under £14k.
Hyundai says that, as the diesel i20 has a reasonably low kerb weight of 1222kg, it wouldn't need a great deal of power to turn in a sub-8.0sec 0-60mph time and post a 130mph top speed. But by using a reworked version of the frugal diesel, it could still offer ultra-low running costs.
The hot i20 would probably get larger 17-inch wheels, bigger brakes and a body kit, and it would ride lower to improve the handling. One of Hyundai's chassis development team told us that adjusting the i20's set-up for a sportier drive would not be difficult.
Why is Hyundai Europe so much cooler than boring old Hyundai USA?

OK, don't get too excited, it's just a Kia Sedona EX minivan. But the wife and I are very happy to be rid of our 2002 Chrysler Voyager. The Voyager had only 63K miles on it but just got its third transmission and a new ECM last week. The Sedona is a used 2006 with 27K miles but it's the top EX model with leather, sunroof, 3-zone HVAC, power sliding doors, power hatch, 17" aluminum wheels, and as mentioned in the topic description, the 3.8L Lambda V6. Sweet engine.

Part of my disappointment is simply personal. The i30 station wagon (Elantra Touring) we're getting simply isn't going to appeal to enthusiasts and that's not good for the club. And that sucks. The other part of it is the fact that the i30 hatch really has some potential. I came across this pic of an i30 hatch with the Tomato lip kit/grille:
Droolworthy huh?

There's a hint that the i10, Hyundai's smallest car (think smaller than a Honda Fit) might come to the US, although not so soon. It would require some safety upgrades to meet US standards. Apparently the concept of a $8,000-$11,000 minicar that gets 56mpg is more appealing in the US given.... yes, gas prices. Might come as a Kia though.
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/18/hyundai...car-from-india/At the other end of the car size spectrum, Hyundai released a teaser photo of its largest sedan yet, the Equus (yeah, like the play with the Harry Potter kid naked with the horse. But Hyundai named that model line the Equus before that play). This is Hyundai's (so far) Korean market limousine type luxury car. More S-Class to the Genesis's 5-series / E-Class. The upcoming car, to be shown in February, could have a larger 400hp 5.0L version of the 375hp Tau V8 in the Genesis, as well as an even larger and supercharged 5.5L V8. Yes! Just in time for $4/gal gas!
The old one is uh... definitely due for a redesign...
A FWD V8 Limousine? Really? Huh.

So Monday night we replaced the well-loved-but-falling-apart-rapidly '98 Taurus my wife's had for the last 6 years with an '03 Kia Rio. Nothing quite like shedding 5 years and 101k miles (165k down to 64k), if only it didn't have the payment attached.
The big question I have (and can't seem to locate the answer to) is: the 1.6 DOHC under the hood is an Alpha, correct? As such, is it also an interference engine like the Beta (which will be getting a new timing belt at 100k, just because I don't know if it's had one yet)? I may just be up for a bunch of mechanic-ing if it is.

There's been some confusion about the future of the Tiburon, given it's an aging platform and going to be in the shadow of the Genesis coupe. Intially the Genesis coupe was thought to be the Tiburon, but Hyundai said it was not, and there would be a separate, FWD Tiburon coming. Then several places said the Tiburon was not coming anymore.... well, now they say it is, although not necessarily immediately:
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/11/new-hyu...rankfurt-in-09/In the grander scheme... who cares, right? I mean Genesis Coupe > Tiburon, clearly. But there might be room under the Genesis for a sub-$18,000 FWD 'sporty' car, a niche which the Elantra is clearly not filling.

According to JD Power, the sales price of the Hyundai Accent is up $610 over this time last year. The Chevy Aveo and Nissan Versa are also selling for more, $671 and $492, respectively. It could be attributed to high gas prices increasing demand for subcompact cars. Seems pretty straighforward but those cars are exceptions. The average small car price has fallen even though sales numbers have increased overall 33%. The Honda Fit's average sale is only $124 more than last year, but sales are almost doubled, 77% higher. So what's going on? Is Honda better at cranking out Fits to meet demand? Are there new kinds of customers in the small car market? Beats me.

I have been looking for a new car lately and went to check out several brands. I checked out the Honda's but they were too damn expensive for what they were. I checked out the Yaris and was underwhelmed by its ugliness and awkward control panel. I went back to the Hyundai dealer and noticed that I really liked the Accent hatches for some reason. The only other car I wanted to drive was a new Elantra SE that was priced at $14,800 after rebates. The car had a 5spd and the clutch had no feedback whatsoever and disengaged almost at the floor. I have never driven such a sloppy 5spd, it stalled numerous times and there had to be something wrong with it, but it turned me totally off. I next drove a black Accent with only Auto tranny, XM radio and AC as the only luxury items. I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did, and the fact that it gets better MPG highway than the 5spd version was a good selling point. After discussing it with the wife and a bit of paperwork I am the proud owner of that black/gray Accent hatch. I was going to trade in my Camaro but they only wanted to give me $1,000 for it. I can get $2500 easily private party so I declined. I will post some pics later on, I have to dig my camera out.

Well, the turd started making some TERRIBLE noises the last few days. Only off load (coasting or decelerating), and sit sounded like a bad bearing/crappy brakes/something coming apart internally. I hoped and prayed for a bearing. Nope. Then I thought let it be a cheap axle. Uh-uh. Caliper? Nada.
Differential is going going gone. I tried changing the fluid Sunday afternoon. Fluid came out BLACK, gritty and full of chunks. Not a good sign. Drove it again today and the more I drove, the worse it got. Put it in the air, running and as soon as I rolled under the diff there it was. Had the wife rev the engin in gear, and it got louder. Put my hand on the diff and you can feel it.
Damn.
Anyone near here:

Here's why I sometimes get so frustrated with this company. In Germany, Hyundai is now offering up a limited edition of the i30 hatch dubbed the "White Edition". Just look at those amazing Hyundai wheels and 225/45 R17 rubber. But no, here in the states we're getting the boring wagon ..oops .. I meant "Elantra Touring". Thanks Hyundai USA. Why do us Elantra lovers/tuners get crapped on by Hyundai most of the time?

Look at the cute little engine and the cute, teeny weeny grille...
Seriously though, for the market this is meant for (a high mileage, city car) it's very nice. You gotta love 56MPG.
From Auto Express:QUOTE
Last year, Hyundai went upmarket with its excellent i30 hatch-back. Now, the Korean company is back – offering a new supermini which it says will deliver big quality at low prices.
The i10 replaces the ageing Amica, and promises a class-leading specification, five-year warranty and starting price of only £6,495. It certainly looks tempting, but does it have the style and substance to take on rivals from Europe and Japan?
There’s no denying it’s generously equipped. Air-conditioning, four air-bags and an MP3-compatible CD player with six speakers are standard on the entry-level Classic, with the mid-range Comfort adding enough extra kit to justify its £600 premium.
There’s also a Comfort Auto model for £7,895, although the range-topper is the £7,595 Style, which has 15-inch alloys, a rear spoiler and a sunroof. All variants use a 65bhp 1.1-litre engine which returns 56.5mpg com-bined, and has low enough emissions to be exempt from the revised London congestion charge, due in October.
On the outside, the front is fine – even cute. From the door handles back, however, it’s clear that style has lost out to function on the five-door-only supermini. But the newcomer is well built, and there are no signs of cutting costs. Even the cabin – usually brittle and flimsy on budget models – is durable and robust. It’s also stylish, although the funky colour inserts on the dash and seats won’t feature on UK cars. Still, boot space is excellent and rear passenger room plentiful.
The best seat is the driver’s, where chunky controls enable you to exploit the weighted and responsive steering, progressive brakes and tidy gearshift. It’s not especially fast, but it’s fun.
In the city, great all-round visibility and responsive controls make man-oeuvres easy. And there’s no need to avoid motorways, either, because the Hyundai is happy in any lane.
The only real flaw is the i10’s rowdy powerplant. When it’s at the top of the rev range, it makes more noise than performance – particularly with the auto box – and on inclines, it can struggle. Thankfully, a new 74bhp 1.2-litre petrol unit arrives later in the year. Yet in every other way – from build quality to standard kit, and interior space to overall style – the Hyundai easily beats Kia’s £6,759 Picanto and the £6,245 Chevrolet Matiz.
It faces a tougher battle with some of the more established names. The i10 isn’t as athletic in corners as the £8,499 Mazda 2, and it’s not as cute as Toyota’s £7,195 Aygo. All the same, the i10 does a great job of showing how far the brand has come.
Price: £6,495
Engine: 1.1-litre 4cyl
Power: 65bhp
Transmission: Five-speed manual, front-wheel drive
Economy: 56.5mpg

QUOTE (blupupher @ Apr 2 2008, 10:37 AM)
how many miles was that 2 qts used in? Odd it goes fro 2 qts to none, but good for the car.
QUOTE (fgummett @ Apr 2 2008, 10:44 AM)
Is it possible that the additives in the Mobil 1 helped to fix any leaks in valve seals, or piston rings..?
I KNEW I had started one on this. . .must be insane, or losing what little mind I have left. . .
OK, about a month ago or so, wife came into the bathroom as I was getting out ofthe shower telling me a red light was on, not the normal CEL one. So I go out and it's the oil light. I asked her how long it's been on and get the "It's been on and off for the last week or so (for the non-married's "or so" means triple the first time given, this case 3 weeks). So I check the dipstick, nothing. Put in a quart, still one low. So itwas 2 qts low and olny holds 3.3. Not good. The previous oil change I used M1 10W30 and an OEM filter. When I changed the VC gasket, there was no build up, just 142k miles of varnish from dino oil. Dipstick and oil cap also had a coating of varnsih.
When I checked it a couple times throughout this time span I noticed how the varnish was disappearing from the dipstick. Somewhere between 3k and 4200 miles the car drank 2 qts. Engine was ticking slightly from the top end, valvetrain noise, even after adding 2 qts. She drove it 2 days, I checked it again and the oil was black, but full. Black like it had been in there 7k miles. No gas smell, no coolant mixed in. Just dirty.
Changed the oil with another OEM filter and 3.3ish qts of Valvoline 10W30 dino oil, noise went away. Car runs sooth still. 1500 miles later and not a drop is missing.
My THEORY is that the M1 cleaned the engine of all the built up varnish and sludge deposits. After enough time those deposits started to burnoff and the oil burned with it. I have no scientific backing for any of this, butit's all I can come up with. I've driven the car multipe times since, and many of those were as hard as I could drive it and it doens't smoke, doesn't leak. Runs strong for 92hp and as many miles as are on it and it's smooth and quiet.
So Cliff's notes:Turd had varnish. Changed with M1. 4200 miles later burned 2qts. Changed oil an not burning anymore and varnish is gone.
