Hello.
Just bought a 2014 Elantra GT GLS. Traded in my 2012 Touring. I just couldn't resist and the timing was right. I got $3000 off the sticker price. biggrin.gif

Anyway, I'm just going through a lot of the new features and one thing I can't figure out has to do with the bluetooth phone feature. I have the phone paired, and the calls do work. In fact, I started a call at home and walked to my car and it offered to take over the call for me... sweet!

However, I can't figure out why the phone doesn't activate if the stereo isn't on. It doesn't seem right to me. Hitting the "Phone" button on the dash or the call/listen button on the steering wheel does nothing until I turn on the music first.

Am I missing something?

P.S. - love the handling, the panorama roof, the "electric" chair. Kind of bummed on the lack of compartments compared to previous Elantras though.

The bluetooth functionnality on the new elantra gt is part of the radio
This is why you need the radio on
If you look on your phone i believe the bluetooth won't even be connected if radio is off.

I'll wait for next generation before changing my touring
Hyundai america Seems to follow a pattern for the gt: hatch(xd gt)-wagon(fd wagon)-hatch(gd gt)
Hoping on that next elantra ht should be a full wagon rolleyes.gif

Thanks Snakoil. I guess that sort of makes sense. However... the radio was not on when I got into my car this morning while on a call, and the screen popped up asking if it should take over the call. unsure.gif

Not quite sure what is going on... if i am in the car and hit the call button with the radio off it will turn on itself and make the call as i want, its an '11 Limited sedan. I don't see any reason why yours shouldn't do the same.

Thanks gotoguy. There is nothing in the manual either that says it must be on in order to use. It just says to hit the call button on the steering wheel.

I can also do this without turning on the unit... press and hold my iPhone home button which invokes Siri. The stereo will light up and all audio with Siri will go through the car system. I can asks things, dictate messages etc. - so it really doesn't make sense to me why the phone needs the stereo turned on first.

Slightly related issue - as I mentioned above, audio related to Siri will go through the car system. In another example, I can ask for directions by saying "directions to xxx address". I will then hear it reply "finding directions to xxx" and when it finds it, I tap Start on my iPhone and it gives me step by step directions to the address. However, at this point it stops giving me audio directions - not on the iPhone, not through the car system. So I don't get "turn left in 50 meters" etc like I should be.

I discovered the Maps solution on the Apple forums. When you set up the route in the map apps and start it, there is a bluetooth speaker icon in the bottom right corner. Tap it and some audio options come up. The bottom option for HFP Prompts needs to be enabled. Now the directions audio plays over the speakers.

Otherwise you'll get other audio from Siri over the car speakers except map directions.

Regarding the phone itself, I did another test. With the stereo off, I held the home button on my iPhone. The stereo screen lit up and Siri beeped and I said "call mom", then it replied (over the car speakers) "calling mom" and it initiated the call. So that proves that the stereo doesn't need to be on and something is wrong with the steering wheel controls.
