Hello, I have a 2012 Elantra Limited. It has 15,000 miles on it. Since day one it has had an engine noise that can be heard on cold starts only. After it warms up it is very quiet. Hardly know that it is running after it is fully warmed up. I have personally talked to two owners of 2013 Elantras that have no noise at all on cold start.
The noise sounds like loose valve adjustments. It is an upper engine noise and it clatters loudly. You can hear it in the car with doors closed. The noise eventually goes away after about 2 minutes. I had it in twice to the dealership. They say it is fuel injector noise and that it is not unusual.
I just want to know from other 2012 Elantra owners if their cars are quiet on cold start or if they clatter loudly for a little while.
Thank you.

Are you using an OEM oil filter?

Hey-My '11 Elantra has made a noise at cold start up since day one. It only lasts for about two seconds and then it's (very) quiet. I'm not too concerned. The warranty will take care of any issues, should they arise.
It doesn't make the noise on warm start up, BTW. Hyundai has a TSB on this and they recommend only using their oil filters to eliminate the problem.

Double check this and run it by your dealership. http://www.elantraclub.com/forum/index.php...st&p=342353

Fuel injector noise? Lol

I don't own a 2012, but 90% of time its oil system.

Are you in a cold climate? Check manual to see if another grade that's heavier is compatible..or is it lighter? Lol

Oh no, I'm so sorry... the correct answer is The Moops.

The packaging clearly stated '100'. I'm short ONE luft balloon.

Here is an answer back to some questions posted. I live in Washington State, not particularly a cold climate. The cold start noise is also present now in Spring with some pretty warm days and nights. I have brought this to my dealership's attention twice now. They have changed the filter and oil several times in the attempt to lessen the noise. I am assuming they are using OEM Filters.
I read the post from Vinnie with the tech service bulletin reference about replacing lifters for Elantras with certain dates of manufacture. The date was 8-8-2011 to 8-17-2011. My Elantra was made 8-31-2011. But I brought it to my Hyundai dealership anyway. They are reviewing it.

Thanks everyone

Hey-keep us posted on what the dealer decides to do (if anything) with your '12 Elantra.

2012 Elantra has had a very loud valvetrain since day one. Around 8500 miles on it now.

Ironicly I just changed the oil a couple of weeks ago and used a Bosch filter and Quaker state synthetic oil. And it quited it right down. Not much valvetrain niose at all now. However I've heard that Hyundai will not cover any oil related engine problems if an aftermarket filter is used. IMO not worth the risk so I am going to stock up on OEM Hyundai filters for the next couple oil changes. Even if it get noisy again. I don't want to givve them any excuse not to cover something should the need ever arise.

We just bought a LTD six weeks ago and I noticed ours doing that too for about 2 seconds on just about every cold start up.
Ours has the fancy Nav. and Dual Air Pkg.

TRY THIS:

I have narrowed this down . . . in part to the ventilation system . . .I think the heater or ac is kicking-in when you
did not set it to come on or at least you thought you didn't ? . . . Seems to be playing a part in this

Even though you have the fan speed all the down and no other vent items lit up . . . if it is left in the AUTO position
it will be ON and it will not readily show . . . very easy to miss.

My main control directly above the fan speed wheel has a setting of . . . AUTO or OFF.

Before you turn the car off at night . . . make sure you turn that main vent switch to OFF.
so that you know it is off when you cold- start it in the morning.

NOW, for me . . . 9 out of 10 Times on a cold start I do not hear that 2-3 second dull chain type noise.

Works for me ! . . . How about you ?

MD/UD valve train noise. There was a service campaign on 2012 MY Elantra's, produced from August 8th 2011 to August 17th 2011 to replace the hydraulic lash adjusters.. Granted some of your vehicles won't fall within that time frame, may be a good idea to mention this to your dealer. TSB number 11-01-053, Campaign TH2. You're welcome.
